When “imperfect” adds life
« on: December 09, 2020, 03:43:47 PM »
Since “perfect” skating with no sketchiness whatsoever(hands down, tick tac, non robotic movements) tends to be a standard eyes of many in how skateboarding should be done.

I think it’d be cool to explore some examples of when a “sketchy” or unusual land, roll away or anywhere along the lines of a trick can be just as amazing if not better than being 100% clean with it.

The way Jerry held and came out of the Nollie backside Heel ender still amazes me. Timeless

Gilberts style with the pivot slide out of that backside flip ender made the trick look so much sicker than coming out straight imo

Can’t believe Fowler was able to take that last tre flip home after that landing. So fucking sick

MC is generally considered to be one of the smoothest/most graceful skaters but his first Plan B part was full of inventive, next-level tricks that he possibly didn't even have time to perfect. The last two tricks in this crazy part are EPIC but a little on the sketch side:

I can’t believe he landed the kickflip at 2:57 seconds into this part. It shouldn’t have been possible.
As soon as Nelson hears that anything is “small and intimate” he gets paranoid he’s not invited and goes crazy to get there, so he put his mind to it and got there through someone else. It turned out to be thousands of people there so when he saw Paul he said, “Small, intimate world, isn’t it?

I prefer the sketch factor to a degree, like it seems more real to me, and I appreciate that.
Shout out to jamal smith. Is sketchy-clean a thing?

My favorite in the Jerry part is the back 180 over the bump to bar where he pivoted out at the end. It think it looked better than it would if we landed it clean.

Every Casper Brooker and Chris Jones clip is a nail biter in the best of ways, love watching Mikey barely pulling off a switch heel or nollie bs flip at the end of a line

and the kickflip down the wedge then crash into the wall is so much better than a perfect roll away

Kirbys big spin over the bump to bar in new Deathwish vid where his nose/tail slaps the top of the bar on the way over was so dope. It was like a pop shuv tail drop 180.

Agree on all of these

He doesn’t tic tac (of course) but I love the way Suciu lands the bs noseblunt down blubba in verso. Just a hint of sketch within almost total perfection.

My friend Andrew calls this "high drama skateboarding", I love when he goes on and on about how it adds to the enjoyment of seeing someone skate. I appreciate the examples in this thread in the same way, Lenny Kirk in Timecode for example is one of the pivotal parts of my youth. My current favorite for putting out footage with this quality is Deedz, and Evan Smith has been on the forefront for a while now I reckon.
