Why do so many pros skate 2 bolts per truck?
« on: April 04, 2022, 02:05:21 AM »
Shin Sanbongi and Guy Mariano, despite having stark differences in trick/spot selection both share one commonality. They both appear to only use 2 bolts per truck (diagonally of course). They are not the only pros that do this.

Why? I asked the same thing so I tried it myself, only to find my trucks hella loose-feeling after a while since the bolts came a bit loose (suppose I could tighten them more), and kinda made me feel unstable and paranoid my shit was about to fall apart.

So now I must ask you, why? or is it more of a "why not"?

You're a pro, you have to set up new decks all the time and you don't give a shit about your baseplate holes ovaling out.

Tom Knox does 3 for this reason. Two sounds fucked up though. On another note, i just realized he's skating an Atlantic drift board in this...

Probably the same reason they grip their board with one side of the tape in from the edge so they don't have to cut it out.
I imagine you just get lazy setting up so many boards, or maybe they just do it if it happens mid-trick so you don't lose focus.

I'd hate to be mid-540 and have one of my two bolts fail...

I'm not a pro, but I am lazy so I run only 3 bolts on each.

I heard this also affects the turn but have no clue how. Might be another reason though I doubt it.

at peak setup madness I was changing my trucks every day and using 2 per truck.
obviously a complete placebo but it makes the deck feel way lighter in my brain. I think it slightly changes the resonance of your pop and for me louder board = better.

also kinda cool to see daylight through your board when you look down. I wish I didnt type all this out because now I'm considering taking some bolts out.

I thought you guys are completely mad so I put a bolt+nut on a scale.
single bolt + nut = 5.27g
That's 10g per truck so honestly some really weight sensible people might feel a difference?
Not gonna try it though

I did this for years, my shit wouldn’t rattle loose, but I did up ovaling out several pairs of trucks, bought some titanium trucks and decided against it because they were slightly more expensive than the normal truck setups I usually get

Lewboski has the correct answer.
I think this got started when boards broke easier. There was a time where I could take a few world boards to the spot because I knew I was gonna break one, quick. One of my friends broke 4 boards in a day doing flatground Ollies. Equipment is for the most part much better these days.

This was a thing in the 90’s because it showed you didn’t care.  It was the push back from a board full of t-nuts.

man that's what i hate the most about missing bolts, if i don't have all 8 when i'm setting a board up i'm not making 8 holes in my grip

for me it makes me genuinely uncomfortable knowing the holes are there but concealed by the grip tape, almost on some uncanny valley shit where it looks almost normal but theres something off about it.
and the asymmetry bothers me if the holes arent there.
