Politics and Skateboarding
« on: January 13, 2021, 08:17:28 AM »
I was wondering what people think about politics in skateboarding? With the recent capital riots/protests/shit show (whatever you want to call it), What are peoples political stances and does it belong in skateboarding? I think its important and that everyone should at least research and vote, I was stoked to see so much pro skater support on it this year but i've also seen the "fuck the us and fuck the government, I dont vote" type skaters at the local park. Opinions?

Skateboarding doesn’t need to be about party, but things like racism and sexism are political issues. Since those are important to pretty much every skater I don’t think you can totally tune everything out.

i think more skaters and people should take a stand and be vocal on issues, as the poster above me said. as a leftist I don't like either party, or want to vote anymore, and I get the anti-government stand a lot of people take. However, racism, sexism, transphobia, poverty, labor rights, these are all things that affect everybody, and more people should talk. I know skaters aren't the smartest people, but I feel like the smarter ones are outshined and talked over by the dumb ones.

Another funny thing to me is when right-wing skaters and other people not neccesarily on that side of the spectrum will bitch about "cancel culture". Cancel culture is the worst buzzword created, because there is no such thing honestly. There's not a mob of shadowy figures coming to take what you love because you said something. Its the same fearful mentality Conservatives have in terms of their way of living. They act like they are strong, independent types, but cower in fear at the thought of somebody else having healthcare on their dime. Its the same fear-mongering terms, but just applied to different things.

People need to realize that there is no cancel culture, there is just criticism coming from people, which most of the time is justified and has ALWAYS happened in the public eye, but now that everybody has a voice it's just amplified. If you say something dumb like "Trump is the greatest president of all time", and somebody says "that's fucking dumb", they are not trying to silence you, they are just calling you fucking dumb. It all kind of reminds me of the Eric Andre meme where he shoots Hanibal and then is like "what have I done". Somebody says or does something awful, a bunch of people call them out on their shit, and then they bitch and moan about "cancel culture" even tho they did it to themselves.

As somebody very far left on the ideaology scale, with pretty controversial opinions, when I let them out in the world I am prepared for backlash. I dont know why people think the littlest amount of backlash is people trying to silence them.

Anyways, sorry for the rant. Its a wild day.

Politics are a part of punk, hip hop, graffiti. I have no problem with skateboarders or companies wearing their beliefs on their sleeves. Now I know I'll never support Kris Markovich, Pat Duffy, Duane Peters or Mikey Taylor but you can be sure I'll support most anything Jim T, Dill or Brian Anderson do.

I like to vote with my wallet and support people who are moving things in a direction I'd like to see.

The people who complain about politics in music, art, skateboarding or even the NFL are typically of a certain political persuasion and frankly- fuck them.

A blind faith in capitalism. The typical fiscally conservative nonsense that if you work hard enough wealth is easily available to anyone. And don't complain if you live poverty.

Existence is political, no matter which body you inhabit. To 'keep politics out of X-space' is to completely ignore and disregard the plight of so many people in X-space.

However, things like racism, sexism, ableism, health care, poverty, etc. are not political issues. These are human rights issues and everybody should be taking a firm stance for them.

As skateboarding is a largely white, male demographic, we should be making hard efforts to make our spaces welcoming and safe for everyone who isn't that - and then take that to the rest of the spaces you occupy.

Anything but action on the issues mentioned above is rooted purely in privilege and/or racism and you are part of the issue that perpetuates these cycles if you will not be actively against them. Fuck apologism for the homie/coworker/family member who's 'a nice person but says some racist things every now and then'.

I think skateboarding is honestly in a pretty good place socially at the moment.  Yeah we have shitheads like Duane and Sinner but we have also seen a ton more exposure and coverage of women,LGBT,POC,etc. in recent years.

With the political climate as divided and volatile as it is these days it's bound to show up in skateboarding whether people like it or not.  The people saying "Keep ur politics to yourself" only say it because they aren't hearing what they want to hear. I definitely agree it's important to stay informed and vote, it's something young people don't do enough.  All those old MAGA Meemaws and Fox News grandpas get out and vote EVERY SINGLE CHANCE THEY GET, and it has WAY more effect on younger generations than it does for them.

Get hungry on it!

If you’ve spent money on anything as an employed adult, you have therefore made many political statements. Skateboarding is no exception, it’s important to know where and who your money goes to.

I try to wear my political views on my sleeve, I mind my business with both parties but I’m not going to let hate speech and other important issues be silenced.

Silence is is idle compliance and if you see something say something and do something about it.

My beliefs align most closely with libertarian socialism. I think gay skateboarders should be able to get married while smoking weed and strapped with a governed weapon after passing a comprehensive background check, all while enjoying a wide ranging safety net should one of them take a nasty spill or fall onto hard times.

Free speech should only extend to those not inciting violence. Cancel culture is great for exposing criminality that may have gone unpunished and it also also can lead to misidentification which is bad.

In the 2000 runoff  between Bush and Al Gore, the entire presidential election was decided buy a margin of under 500 votes in Florida. It was just 44,000 votes in Georgia, Arizona and Wisconsin that separated Biden and Trump from a tie in the Electoral College. Trump won in 2016 with under 80,000 votes. Fuck tons of gerrymandering has led to frequently close elections from the county level on up. Voting matters now more than ever.

Local elections are super important as well! Just because Joe Biden and Donald Trump are both shitty candidates doesn't mean you can't work to improve your local community.

Leave politics out of this is just a way of saying "hey don't challenge the status quo, I like it just the way it is."

I mean does anyone believe standing for the national anthem prior to a street league or football game isn't political? (What could be more political than some N. Korea loyalty oath before recreation is allowed?) Does anyone think when some basketball player prays to baby Jesus to help him win that isn't a religious-political statement? (Would people react the same if the player prayed to Mohammed for his win?)

Hell, I remember back in 2002-03 where the boards were made was highly political. JT being the first into Mexico (despite his bullshit denials) and then Dwindle heading to China (Powell was the first into China, I think) made which boards we bought super political. I remember the conservative owner of the shop I worked yelling at me for wanting to buy American because anyone who lost their factory job should have gotten an education and prepared for today's economy.

And, skateboarding ends up being highly political in itself. The whole activity rallies against some forms of private property. We aren't good capitalists or libertarians because we don't respect private property (of businesses). We have taken the private and redefined it as communal places of play.

Finally, as for not voting, I can't think of a worse idea. Biden isn't my dream but there is no comparison between him and Trump or Cruz. The stronger the left gets without having to pander to the burbs the stronger they'll be as a left wing party instead of a center-right party that gets labeled as Marxists

I don't think people here are saying that you HAVE to engage in political conversation every time the opportunity presents itself.  It's just that people shouldn't be surprised or get all shitty that it is becoming more common to speak out on social media and whatnot.
