i'm kinda new to the scene, but hell yeah, the dead rule! everything clicked with them on a walk this summer and it felt like being welcomed into a cool club. love em jamming, love the americana stuff, love the funk stuff. great band. also, maybe the most punk band of all time.

Big fan of the Dead, could listen to 70s Dead all the time ('77 shows in particular).

I was big into the jam band scene for a bit, still follow the Disco Biscuits when it's not all pandemic like.

I think it works well in videos, but seems like Matt Field is the only one who wants to use em.

I guess Josh Matthews too.

Ha ha ha when I worked as a teacher for a few years I pulled that freaks and geeks trip and gave a one of my students American Beauty the year she graduated and said "you get into this, you'll make friends everywhere you go." Not sure what they're up to these days

But ya, Dead to the core. Never got to see Garcia but I've seen all the family related bands since I started seeing the Other Ones on 11/19/02. After that first show I thought "this is what I want my life to be" and hopped on. It's music of my soul. Sometimes it's just fun, sometimes it's a spiritual thing, sometimes it's everything.

Was really fortunate to catch Phil and the TFB sets at Oregon County Fair in 2019. Definitely didn't think it'd be the last show I'd catch for so long. I think what was coolest about that show, and just working fair in general, is that it's such sacred ground in Dead lore. Kesey family land. Veneta 08/27/72. Seriously, the place is dripping in lysergic energy. mmm mmm mmm

I don't really dig Mayer playing in Dead & Co these days, but it's fun to dance and see family/friends. I like what Mickey and Billy are doing, drumz being the most consistent part of any show over the past 30 years! Chimenti and Oteil crush it too. There's a ton of good family stuff out there too. Caught the the Golden Gate Wingmen a few years back, Melvin and JGB. Any of y'all on the Billy Strings tip yet? Homie is good. Google Billy Strings Wharf Rat. shit is straight fire.

The Bobby & Phil duo shows were good too. Caught both nights RCMH and night 2 in Boston. It was weird at first, the whole old man, bougie vibe inside, but man was it fun. I used to go on Phish tour and have had a lot of fun with them, but Trey at RCMH on Eyes made me think "aaah, this is the roots of Phish!"

stay dead, homies!

lots of great band references, book references, and all around fried shit I'd expect from dead head skaters, This is kind of off topic but do any of you jam/play yourselves?

@Iusedtoskatemore I'm very jealous, I've caught phil and bobby in their own projects a bunch but never together. Also props to fulfilling chill teacher prophecy.

I met Kesey's fam in Oregon, then again in SF, it was magic.

This is my all time show, its hot as hell out, they do great transitions into my all time songs, they filmed the whole damn thing, and theirs some great animations with it, you really get a good feeling of just how big the beast was getting at that point.

yeeeeeah kid. That Veneta Show is incredible. Over at the Fair grounds is where I last saw Phil! Look up the book "Heads" https://b-ok.cc/book/3315139/263f80 A Biography of Psychedelic America." Real cool read for the most part and tells the history of Owsley and the Boys.

The bobby and Phil shows were very special. Listen to the birdsong with Trey and Girl from the North Country. Oh boy, did I get emotional with the GFTNC. Apparently Phil played a surprise set at Terrapin Crossroads recently!!!

Got me some Working Man's Dead on the turntable right now mmm mmm mmm

Cool story, hey, so this winter I wrote a letter to an old skate/tour buddy whose phone number I lost but somehow still remembered his address. Dude's probably 10-12 years older than me and was a big influence when I was a teenager starting to get more serious about skating, and when I started smoking bud he had the kind and this was the east coast 2001, so a regular source of sinsemilla was pretty fuckin rare. He was also the dude that gave me my first Dead tapes. Ended up going to a lot of shows together over the years but you know, head life can get kinda weird and druggy so we lost touch for a minute. Anyways, I'd sent the letter out and didn't hear back for a few months and figured it was how it went. Well, I came home from skating last week and there was a package waiting for me and low and behold, homie got my letter! Dude wrote me a letter and his life seems to be good and he also sent me an actual photo from the Cape Cod Coliseum run in Fall 79 that he said "some old hippy later here in town gave this to me years ago and I want you to have it now because I think it will look cool in your pad." Kinda weirder but doubly special is that it used to hang in the office of his restaurant that I used to get stoked to be invited into and well, it still smells faintly like pizza.

oh yeah, now that I skate with a single ear bud in and can listen to music, I've been skating to some early dead shows and it's kinda cool for the focus. I'm a dance and spin and flow at shows, in my car, wherever, so the GD skate has been flowy as fuck for the parking lot sesh!

love to you all

an awesome story, whenever I listen to the dead when I skate, its like my body gets more comfortable, like "oh yea, its time to move".

The GD and the idea of lifelong friendship and that youthful influence from an older fan and friend just inspired me super greatly, I think after the pandemic I'm going to make a film about the makeshift families and the families within the greater jam scene, and how they might reflect and also refuse a lot of western ideas of family.

This is getting way off topic, but its why I'm so grateful(!) to be introduced to the scene at a young age, the lessons to be learned from the band and the people following it are that you can do whatever the hell you want if you've got some fire in you, some friends, and some weed/psychs to coax the wheels along! lmfao

Thank you. It was my homie Mike Kobialka's (rip)

I'm saving it for my next vest project.
I like to put one or two "non punk" bands or whatever on my stuff. Especially when there's a high stud count. I always go around 600-1200 studs with 6 or 6 patches.

having a "non punk" band on your stuff helps
you meet more open-minded musicians or artist to work with.

Any you fools catch some billy & the kids w Billy strings? Wiiiiiiicked good. So fucking good. Even if strings playing and singing sucked, which it doesn't, I'd like this better than the other family bands playing right now because strings used to shred (skate). I'll give some of it a listen and see how I feel on it. Tbh, most of the time I really don't dig covers of Dead songs- I dig good bands who play Dead and play Dead well - but like anything, with this newer boom of popularity of GD music, there's a lot of non-heads out there trying to play Dead and leaving out the lysergic bits and pieces. Grateful Dead ain't Grateful Dead without that component, hence Mayer trying to play Dead and being incredibly limited. Maybe I'm wrong and maybe I'm sour and in love with it all I don't know, but I'll give that record a listen and see if it takes me anywhere. Heart of gold band

Thought I told this story before but Matt Field was sorta legendary on Dead lot when Jerry was still around. Lots of kids caring their boards through grass lots even. Books ups and Alien Workshop gear was highly coveted.  Lots of ramps in the back of Penskes got broke out on eat coast lot.

If anyone has tickets to Slow & Co your that starts this week, you better be fully vaxd, out have a confirmed neg test.
I saw phish x2 in Hershey and the first night in AC. Hard to give my extra tix away.  Not going to shows for awhile. Thousands of people packed together. At least in Hershey it was easy to go high up on rage side and keep distance from others. Not once did I stand in line for a beer, even though dieing for one.

Not once did I stand in line for a beer, even though dieing for one.

no doubt. I got a Matt field the Killing floor deck with a stealie on my wall.

For the shows I don't know, but especially with the virus, I might be all set with dead & slo anyways. Last time I saw em was at the Gorge 2019 and it was too much of a clusterfuck to do again. Night one was dosed to high heavens, feel me, then night 2 was sober and the vibration/inspiration was just too flat. And night 2 was my birthday to boot. Least memorable birthday show I've had (June 8 birthday has gotten me many, many shows). I work Oregon Country Fair and caught the Phil & TFB sets a month later and it was just better music. Of course Veneta is going to bring a different vibration but I just dug the music better. You know what it is with Dead & slo for me? There's no surprises to the music. The first few times I caught them in 2016-17, those shows at the Boston Garden, man they were good.. that Brokedown encore> PITB reprise was a smoke show, but that was probably the last killer show I saw from those guys. JRAD, Phil, Bobby & Phil duo, wicked good shit. I really wanna catch billy & the kids. Of course I'll take what I can get...

But ya, I had a ticket to a day at the days between festival in laytonville with DSO, David Nelson, Stu Allen, Jerrys middle finger... but I figured it wasn't going to be comfortable for me down in Mendo right now. we will get by my brother.

I was just streaming the Dinner and a Movie, and wondered if there was any slap action. Clifford Ball was a life changing experience, meeting so many other skaters, writers, and.kids in general from sh over.

TxR finally getting closed sucks, I know Phil says he plans to open another, but I'll buy them a venue if I can have dinner with Elliot Peck forever.

Its incredibly hard going from hearing Red Rocks from the back porch to some Mason Dixon music wasteland.

I had a lot of fun doing phish runs. Always high and always skating hahaha. We were in grid lock traffic in NYC, on the freeway, maybe 90??? and we're big as hell. My homie Jake opens the door and starts skating between cars and shit. I'm bugging because, you know how it was on the road... draw no attention. Homie refuses to get in the car and starts trying to Skitch a little while we're starting to creep along. ha ha ha

At SPAC there was a pavilion on the grounds that had granite benches we used to skate too...

Wife got me into the Dead a few years ago. She's been into them forever. I never really "got it," although I've always been super into Floyd, Zeppelin, classic psych stuff. Never really had the right intro, I guess.

It really clicked for me after watching the Amazon series on them when that came out, then it was game over. Just picked up the Europe '72 vinyl the other day.

Hope to see Dead & Company one of these days. We used to go watch Uncle John's Band at Skipper's in Tampa fairly often. Since moving to Brooklyn, the Brooklyn Bowl has had a some solid cover bands through. Grateful Shred was super good.
