Surfer

Though I've never tried surfing or snowboarding, surfing looks the coolest/most fun out of all of them.

Snowboarder so I can smoke weed on the lift and cruise down mountains.
I can’t swim so surfing seems insane.
BMX is too hard.

Snowboarder. I like the mountains. Plus if you meet a chick at a resort, you know she's at least got enough money for a car, and a lift ticket.

Bodyboarder. Stand up or jackstand.

The other option is skimboarder.

Either option can make the most of less than perfect surf and make it look sick.

Surfing would be sick... great exercise, I’d have a cool tan... probably more attractive to the opposite sex.

BMX would be alright too.  Growing up, I and most other skaters would go around to spots with the BMX guys, so there was always a mutual respect between the two groups.  Like 70% of our spots could be skated and bmx’ed (is that correct nomenclature?), but it was a bummer when a spot wouldn’t work with one of the two groups.  At the time I had no idea their pegs were fucking up all the ledges.  :-\

I’d rather be a razor scooterer than snowboard.  Fuck that rich boy shit.

If you are out in the backcountry with your snowboard, shark encounters are far more common then in the ocean

Surfing. I've caught two waves in my life and the feeling is incredible. Plus you get to work out your whole body which feels nice. And listening to the sound of the water while relaxing is the best, especially in the evening.

I surfed Mission Beach for two months in 97, that was one of the best times of my life and I loved the surfing and the lifestyle. Being one with the ocean etc., sounds cheesy but you‘ll get it once you have been out there waiting for a wave in the sunset with dolphins passing by. I didn‘t pursue it though as I live in a landlocked country plus I am a bit afraid of the ocean. I guess I am just a landlubber at heart. But if that was not the case Surfpro would be my first choice.

I snowboarded for more than 20 years and at some point in my teens / early twenties was doing ok at it. However, I was never really good, guess I was not reckless enough. Perhaps that saved me from major injuries tho. Now my body is old and snowboarding is no fun if you can‘t do no jumps/tricks (at least for me as a skater) so I haven‘t been doing it in 7 years. Plus the snowboard scene can be quite jockish. But give me back my 20 year old body and I‘ll gladly go pro.

Never rode a BMX, plus it looks the most dangerous, scary and gnarly of them all... so thanks but no thanks to that.

surfer. My buddies who surf love it. After the board and wetsuit, if you live near the water, it can be a pretty cheap activity too. Can't wait to get a board and learn this spring.

It starts out easy enough but the difficulty ramps up quickly when you're without an instructor and trying to sight and catch your own waves. Missing a wave from a bad pop up or nosediving can be unforgiving and you'll expend a lot of time and energy making it back out to the break.

That was my biggest take away for the difference between skateboarding and surfing. Missing a trick on your skateboard means picking up your deck and trying again. Missing a wave can mean 10 minutes of hard paddling back out to the line up.

Plus getting caught in a bad churn or in a bad wave brings much needed humility and respect for nature.

That said, surfing. I've skated for years but the most alive I've ever felt was catching a solid wave on a reef break and just trimming the wave, nothing difficult, before popping off the top to and paddling back to the line up.

Surfer for sure, I grew up surfing and was on the surf team for my high school. Fucking love that shit, but I haven’t paddled out in like ten years, but I think about it daily.

Ya man, I don't reckon it's gonna be easy but it's something new and fun to do with my buddies while I'm still living on the ocean. The ocean is cold as fuck here. I guess some of the coldest and rockiest water in California, at least that's what my buddies who grew up surfing in SoCal say. Every year a few people die getting sucked out to sea during the king tides, out of towners who aren't even surfing but standing on the beach/jetty. same with the rivers. it's gnarly up here

mountain biker, it’s the other “thing i like to do” (it’s like 70/30 w/ skating) and rob roskopp and mark partain are pros in both. it just feels like dirt skating.

Avalanches are the big killer in the backcountry. At least as deaths many as shark attacks, if not more.

But drowning under big swells and surfing gnarly rock shore breaks or reefs seems gnarly to me.

Definitely proceed with caution and develop a respect for mother nature. By some freak of nature my tiny country in Asia (which has zero waves) has gotten a swell of baby waves over the past few weeks. The line up is packed with 40 people along a very narrow coastline, but we can't be picky. Most of us would head to Bali (2 hour) flight to scratch the itch before the pandemic hit.

Snow. Bike is kind of boring and having all that metal flying around is gonna poke someones eye out.

Surfing, nah, hate the fucking ocean. Scares the hell out of me.
