I'm forever grateful to the families who took me in, put me up, and taught me the ways during my 20s

When a tree fell our home, a ton of Pals reached out and donated to our GoFundMe which helped us pay first and last month's rent for the place we're in now. On top of that, that money helped us afford everything we needed to live normal lives again.
Forever grateful to you all still. Y'all know who you are. <3 It's one of the reasons I've stuck with Slap for so long.

Some act of kindness I remember

Few years ago my big brother took me to Nepal with him. He paid for everything. We stay in a local family he knew (because he did an internship there few years back). It was a trully great trip.

When I was 16 some kind of friends form boarding school bought a game of chess. They saw I was playing a lot at the time (I just learned). I got somehow a bit emotional (nothing crazy), I trully did not expect a gift from them, I did not even know that they knew it was my birthday.

A kind of old skater at the skatepark where I used to live gave me his old (but very skateable) boards when I was broke, made a big difference.

While I was an the verge of giving up on my thesis, my teacher gave me extra time to work on it and was very understanding about everything (I was in a bad place).

Once me and a friend went to the skateshop get some stuff, I got a board and he got some wheels, for whatever reason(how much he spent, maybe?) he got a skate mag for free along with it and gave it to me cause he knew I liked it, really thoughtful of him. He also hooked me up with a griptape cause I only had money for the board and the grip the guys in the shop gave me was all fucked up and couldn't be used.

My dad was an attentive single parent to 3 while maintaining a high stress job. I reckon that's the most sincere thing I'll have done for me in my life.

That wasn't Slap Pals, if you check the donar list you'll see it was TK and his legion of Shalomies.

I worked as a bartender full time for 18 months post graduation in 2009, needless to say finding a job in the middle of a recession that wasn't insurance or credit card sales was soul crushing. The customers were a mixed bag of business traveller's and social escorts; but the regulars who came in were the bright spot during that time. They were always friendly, tipped well and didn't stop being encouraging throughout the job hunt. Felt I disappointed them every time I missed a shift for a job interview but saw them the next day when I didn't land the job. The working girls were great, they would give the customers grief for not giving us a good tip and would stick food orders on their customers tab so we would have a snack after work.

Heading home from the beach on a hot summer day with my girlfriend at the time... car started smoking and we had to stop about 1 hour drive from home.

This was before cell phones were common (I'm old) and we were really stuck in the middle of nowhere. I think we had stopped for dinner somewhere after the beach so all of the beach crowd had already gone home so we were pretty alone out there on that road. Looking at paper maps we had in the car showed us we had about a 10 mile walk to the nearest "town" which was basically a college campus that in the summer is, obviously, deserted. We thought, "Should we risk it and try to walk there? Should one of us go and the other stay behind?" We were bad at making a decision. Finally I told her I would try to walk to find someone to help and if anyone came by to stay in the car with the doors locked in case they were creeps.

Moments after I walked away from the car another car pulled over in front of ours and backed up to ours. I hustled back to see what was up. The guy asked what was wrong, we told him what was up, and he took a look under the hood. Our radiator was dry (later we discovered that it was cracked). The guy told us that most of the gas stations were closed on sunday nights in the area but he knew of a walmart that should be open but it was like a 20mile drive. He drove there and back and we waited for like 1.5hours wondering if he would show back up. Eventually he did. He poured the radiator fluid in and gave us 2 more bottles to keep filling up if we had problems on the way back. We drove back as slowly and carefully as we could, stopping every time the engine got too hot. We made it home and took the car to get the radiator fixed the next day.

The guy wouldn't accept any money at all. He just told us, the next time you see someone who needs some help, you should help them. I'll never forget that.

My girlfriend worked for a criminal defense lawyer at the time and knew tons of people that worked for the cops so she tried to track down the guy using his license plate number but we were never able to find the guy.

Very similar thing happened to me, except the dude was young so when I stuffed a few notes in his hand he tried to protest but I told him "no, take it" he did.

I once called this guy I had only really met once when I was in Augusta, Georgia to ask if he know anyone with spare Masters tickets. He said "You've come all this way, I'll find you one!" and did. Not easy tickets to get, what a fucking legend!

The one that always stands out was when I was coming out a chip shop as 12 year old with chips and a juice and I dropped and smashed the juice. I had no more money and started trying to pick the glass up to put in the bin and a 50 something guy came out the shop and handed me another and walked off. He must have seen. I have tried to do this for others where ever I can.

In the early 90s I  was at a Prong/Life of Agony show in Zurich with a bunch of homies. We went there by train and of course missed the last train home so we went hitchhiking on the highway in the middle of the night. Obviously no one stopped. Then this van turned up and the guy said he could take some of us (but not all, we were too many) so we split the group and off they went. A few hours later the rest of us were still on that highway and no one stopped. All of a sudden we see the same van. The guy had brought our homies home and on the way back came looking if we were  still there, and as this was the case, picked us up as well and brought us home. The dude literally spent the whole night driving to bring a bunch of teenage metalheads safely home.

This guy was no other than Swiss pro skater Markus "Soerfi" Schweingruber. He now runs a skate online shop skate.ch and I happily order all my stuff from him.

Some great responses in here!

Personally I don't have any interesting stories, but all the small gestures will be remembered. An old housemate could tell when my depression was draining my energy so they'd make sure there was a spare plate of food for me if they cooked a meal. Coming home after some bad days that stuff would almost make me tear up.

once i was lost far from home without money or a clue as to how to get back. like 15 probably and no smartphones then. not even all the kids at school had cell phones at this time. this old couple flagged a bus paid for me and directed me home. i sometimes wonder if theyre still around. or maybe passed them or something years later. bless them

You know what I got for Christmas this year? It was a banner fuckin' year at the old Secrets family. I got a carton of cigarettes. The old man grabbed me and said "Hey. Smoke up Sneaky."

When I was traveling, strangers tended to do really nice things.

I was finishing up a 45 day Amtrak pass in 2011 and making my way back to the east coast when Hurricane Irene was expected to hit. Amtrak cancelled all service east of Albany and because it was an act of Nature, didn't hook passengers up with rooms or bus tickets. It was looking like I was going to be stuck in the 518 while the first hurricane in who knows how long went inland and ripped up Western MA and SE Vermont. This gal I'd been hanging out with since Chicago, where we did get a free hotel downtown due to a layover, had her parents hook me up with a ride to Springfield. Apparently she hadn't been home in a few years and was living on an Anarchist commune, her parents were super Christian, and this was their reunion. Anyways, I was probably pretty gross and they were really kind to me, drove me, fed me carrots and peanut butter with raisins, and tried to give me some money. Dropped me off at the Basketball Hall of Fame and went on their way. That was a real cool, nice thing

After my first quarter in college I didn't have enough money to keep going to the school and couldn't get any financial aid to cover the last 2 grand or $2,500.  My friend's aunt loaned it to me, and after the second quarter something changed and my school was able to help me out.

When I graduated she told me that as a graduation present I didn't have to pay her back.

I forgot, I’ve also got bipolar 2, just found out a year ago, and more recently completely flipped out at my friend of like 24 years and legitimately considered ending the friendship over what was essentially a misunderstanding.  My friend and my other friends who witnessed it were just concerned for me rather than pissed at me and telling me to fuck off.

I have a poor memory so I’m probably forgetting some instances

But recently I was at the Home Depot getting some 6”x6” lumber. I know they cut wood there so I figured it would be no issue to have it done. If I couldn’t get them cut I wouldn’t be able to fit them in my car. As I’m halfway done wheeling these things over to the saw, the old timer there is already saying “I ain’t got a saw big enough to cut that”, which is cool but we’re also standing in a giant hardware store. Surely you have a saw that can help me out, especially since there’s a tool rental section. Anyway, he directs me to the dull handsaws a couple feet away and says I can use those. Without much choice I start cutting in the middle of the isle as people walk through.

People smile and make jokes, and I’m joking back. It is funny as I’m sweating, looking like some worker from the 1920’s. I don’t plan on giving up but figure it’s gonna be at least 20 minutes of this.

Out of nowhere this guy comes up and mentions he has an electric saw in his truck and would help me out, but quickly remembers he left the batteries at home. Then he says, “just go pay for the wood and meet me in the parking lot, I’ll go get my batteries”. This guy is my hero. Twenty minutes later he rolls up in the lot, and makes the cuts in seconds. I sure did cash in some karma points that day.

Nice guy taking time out of his day to help me out. I just moved to this city a couple months ago, and so far everyone’s been super nice.

My friends mom paid me 60 bucks for helping me move like 2 boxes. I felt terrible because I definitely sniffed his sisters panties that were lying around like 20 minutes prior.

My ex girlfriends parents who took me in and gave me a home and safe space for over 3 years, took me on vacations and tried their damndest to show me a life worth living. My biggest regret is not being able to repay them back as they are far removed from my life now. One can only model themselves after some of the best humans they've ever met.
