How do you give back to skateboarding?
« on: February 07, 2021, 05:54:24 AM »
Lots of passion, energy and love for skateboarding here.

The beautiful rise of social concious skaters, skate companies and causes over the last 5 years has me wondering how members have given back to the cause over the years? Brag a little! Maybe it will inspire similar ideas.

(DIY's, sitting at city council, taking a junior member into the crew, giving old boards away, etc, etc, etc)

Just leave your old decks at a park for the kids and call it a day

You choose faith based acts of kindness? I've never chosen that path and I'm a devout athesist, but there is no denying the good that individual believers have shared. Do you proselytize or just perfrom acts of kindness based on your internal beliefs? I do struggle with the use of skateboarding as a recruitment tool for any religion, cult or populist opinion. What are your thoughts?

I’ve never before felt the urge to tell someone to focus their account...I guess I won’t start now.
I must have woken up on the wrong side of the bed this morning or something.
Anyhow, I give old skate stuff to people or leave the stuff at the park. If there’s people I don’t know at the park and we are all vibing having a good sesh, I’ll hand out stickers.
I’m a fat Siamese cat.

Its been like 5 years that I give away my hald lifed decks, i tend to just skate them half way to give away something good, not shitty things..........

HOWEVER
what are your thoughts when the "scene" is way shitty? for example, i feel kids do not get the give your decks thing sometimes, back in my days old dudes were kinda shitty (still are in my town), i never had anybody to back me up like i do with them, yet sometimes i feel like an outsider cuz they will ignore me or shit like that, like they only care for me when i give them things kinda thing--...

might be me, im a really hard person to deal with, but still you know, if somebody is doing something nice for you you can def give a pass on some things right? not every body is perfect like they portrait themselfs on social media at the end of the day

I think just helping newbs progress is a good way to help out. I know when I was young, one of the best memories was the older doods teaching me and giving me copies of videos. That was really cool.

My biggest "give" was spending about 10 years to get a local park built, which was so frustrating but the reward in the end was totally worth the frustration.

I think that's really over looked. A 16 year old at city counsel meetings doing designs and arguing with 50 year olds is pretty odd.

Dont focus deck, give em to the kids. When people are having  fun skating cheer them on regardless of skill level.

I guess I just saying be supportive and be a good human

Donate some gear to kids looking to add the joy of skating into their life. My local skateshop has a program that takes used but good shape gear and gives back to kids in unfortunate circumstances that usually can't afford a proper setup. I believe dgk has done this specifically for people in 3rd world countries

Nurturing the planet is a cause that is very dear to me. Because of this, I decided to start my own reforestation program in my founders’ homeland, Brazil. It is also home to an increasing number of endangered species of plants and animals. For every pair of sneakers purchased, I will plant a pair of trees in the Brazilian Rainforest to directly aid reforestation and the preservation of natural habitats.

You could say me thetans levels are quite high

I feel like you were fuming with hatred and anger for a second, and then you took some deep breaths and exhaled all of that negativity. That's a positive! It's great to hear that you are helping out by giving away old boards and stickers! We need more people like you! take care

I've been starting threads on this msg board lately, which I think is great for the skateboard community, but I think I could do more. I'm going to brainstorm this afternoon and see what ideas I can come up with, to help strengthen skateboarding in general.. Cool post great question!

I don’t. I’ve helped build a bunch of ledges in south philly and it’s only because my friend Chris knew I worked overnights and I would be around to help. I only went because I think the best cheesesteaks in philly are at that place built into the front of the Home Depot on Columbus boulevard

Much like drew, one of the things I like to do is spread positivity through threads on the SLAP message boards.
Then, in order to get twice the mileage out of my benevolent efforts, I use my 2nd account to agree with myself, thus reinforcing the cheery sentiment.
I’ve actually been doing it all over the place; if you look closely I’m sure you’ll see it.
Great thread idea, BTW.
Hugs!

I have really gotten into that during the pandemic!

I have also joined a skate club. We use that club to lobby for new public skateparks. We are currently working on getting a new one built. In Germany having a Club („Verein“) is basically required to be taken seriously by the local governments. Being in a club kind of sucks, because you need to follow a bunch of legal guidelines, but it also feels good to get things done and skate a park you have helped to get build.

Check out our club:
