Woodshop directory 2021
« on: February 09, 2021, 01:39:50 AM »
9 days into the 2nd month of 2021 and still no 2021 woodshop thread? whatever, drunk enough to have made an account just for this.

-151 is bbs, confirmed via email
-as of october 2020 black label is also bbs, confirmed via email but not sure if it is still current

does anyone have a definitive and up to date ps stix list? their boards feel good under my feet.

Thank You is no longer PS Stix, currently a mix of Clutch and DSM wood. Confirmed by SoCal in a email as well.

Most companies are trying to get boards from anywhere they can at this point, so it's difficult to say for certain that brand X is now mfg by brand Y, when its constantly in flux.

Most companies are trying to get boards from anywhere they can at this point, so it's difficult to say for certain that brand X is now mfg by brand Y, when its constantly in flux.
Seeing that trend emerge in the threads pushed me toward trying out a Grandma deck. My thinking was that I just didn’t want to end up on surprise temp wood and I was more likely to avoid it if they pressed the decks themselves. I posted it in setups a few weeks ago but having continued to ride it, it’s as good as the best pro decks I’ve had. I was worried bringing it from Albuquerque to Houston in the winter was going to warp the shit out of it but it’s perfect. I’m starting to wonder how many other little shops like this aren’t overwhelmed by orders.
Here’s their “shop tour” video.

There's a new wood shop making blanks for shops called "Would Shop". I don't know if they're making anything else at the moment, but it's worth keeping an eye on. And unlike some of the other boutique makers, when I say making decks, I mean actually manufacturing skateboard decks from wood plies
This is not my SOTY. I'm telling my kids there was no SOTY for 2021

That Chinese factory name/ info may not be accurate anymore

Info was based on photos and videos from alibabba. Since then images have been pulled from some pages, and also corona may have caused them to switch to whoever is available at the time.

After all, this is (supposed to be) the 2021 list.
Not even sure if there’s much point in one of these until supply issues settle down, post COVID, as brands are (still) having their wood pressed wherever there’s capacity to do so.

There isn't a point to it and I think the old thread is a lot more useful given that it documents more of the fluctuation and supply chain issues.

I had still checked back to older woodshop threads just to find some relevant information or pics of boards on a number of occasions, but I don't think there is any new or relevant information that would justify a 2021 thread, as already posted, due to so many supplier issues in the current times.

Also the fact that the first post should have all the relevant info and be managed by someone who can update the post when needed too, but that is just me being pedantic.

All the US and European brands that have their decks pressed in China (DSM) should be ashamed of themselves.

All the US and European brands that have their decks pressed in China (DSM) should be ashamed of themselves.

Why? This kind of thing is typically born out of misplaced "patriotic" ignorance so I'll try to set you straight here. There's only a handful of US woodshops and they're all smaller places that can't really handle big orders from multiple clients at once. Therefore, if you don't want to wait 6 months for your 300 board order you have to go somewhere else - either Mexico or China. Mexico is getting harder and harder to get boards from unless you're a bigger company, no one is taking new accounts and the existing accounts are being upcharged and made to sign guarantees for huge numbers of boards that they may or may not be able to move.

If you're insinuating that somehow all Chinese boards are bad, that's not the case and hasn't been for a while. DSM boards are solid (albeit not my cup of tea, but that's down to the molds and not the quality), R7 and impact boards are awesome if you like stiff decks that don't break, and I'd be willing to bet my paycheck that if I put a PGI deck in a pile of US/Mexican made boards and had you skate them all you wouldn't be able to tell me which one was made in China. Hell the boards with the absolute best QC in the industry (and the only ones I know of that have a guarantee) are Chinese.

The crusade against Chinese wood is stupid. The boards are fine and since the skate industry isn't somehow magically exempt from inflation and COLA and everyone whines if boards go above $60, the only way bigger companies can operate and actually pay their bills and employees is to bring down the production cost and that means Mexico (which isn't always an option for the reasons I've already outlined) or China. Do you think its just a random coincidence that literally all of the biggest companies use woodshops in those two places? This is simple economics and literally business management 101 stuff.

Daaaaaaaaaaam

What's the excuse for a European brand such a Palace for example then? When there are legit woodshops in the UK and Europe but sadly profit is far more important than carbon footprint. Just press your shit at HLC ffs!

You have been told this same information in your other threads whining about the same thing. No idea why all of a sudden it’s partially sinking in because of this response.

This is really keeping you up at night, huh?

I honestly think it would make more sense if skateboard brands actually manufactured their own boards, but I'm not gonna go invade every thread I can find with my idealist point of view. Chiiiiiilllllll.  ;)
