TWS Camera/Lens Setup Circa Free Your Mind Era
« on: February 09, 2021, 07:56:21 AM »

I have been watching the TWS Vault videos, and I can't get over how good the VX2000 footage looked. I have been trying to figure out how they were able to make the lens they were using look so identically close to a VX1MK1 setup. Does anyone have any insight into what they used during this period? I am leaning towards MK1 since MK2 bayo had no vig, and MK2 screw always had too much. These were the only options I could think of:
  • intermediate MK1 (bayo)
  • MK1 screw with X spacers
  • VX1 MK1 using a bayoring (did they even exist around 2003?)
  • Modified VX1 MK1 cut specifically to fit the VX2000

Since SP is down, it's been difficult to really find any good fisheye comparisons. Youtube has a few, but none come close to match what TWS was using.

Thanks

doyle

That specific fisheye example is almost definitely VX1000 MK1. If the colours and audio don't give it away, you can tell by comparing to the VX2000 longlens in the same clip, where the VX has a few pixel width vertical black bars on both sides (something that all VX1s have).

VX2:

VX1:

Around the same time one of the TWS filmers (maybe Jon Holland or maybe Jason Hernandez at a different point in time) was using a VX2 with MK1 Intermediate, which looks like a MK1, fits on a VX2, and is wider than a MK2. The fisheye in this would be an example of that:

Man, one of the main reasons why I thought it was a VX2000 to begin with was because the audio sounded off. It sounded more hollow-like, and not as crispy as a VX1000. Maybe they compressed the audio during export. But your example with the vertical bars really leaves no room for argument. Thanks for the clarification.

Do you know if any of the fisheye comparisons survived from SP? I remember they had a section dedicated to them. I even submitted one back in the day with a GL raynox/MK1.

If you put in both the main site (skateperception.com) and the forum link (forums.skateperception.com) into Waybackmachine, there's a ton of stuff you can still access from 2004 up until 2018. In fact, most of this page has been archived pretty well (which includes the fisheye comparisons);

There's even videos on the front page dating 2004-05 you can still acquire, which I found mad.

Holy shit, what a nostalgia hit. I spent so much time on there, shame it went down. Seems like there isn't the community for it any more looking at how quiet it was when it briefly reappeared.

Yeah it's a shame. I was looking at the archive one day and I thought I'd ask Steve about a possible return, since a few others had asked and it was mentioned on the FB page. I think I remember him mentioning the place that hosted the servers were kind of wanting a stupid price or held the data at 'ransom' per se? But he managed to sort something out and it came back in 2018. It wasn't anything like it was of course. I was late to the party since I never bothered to sign up back in the day since I always thought it was just for filmers/photographers, but in 2013 I got my first VX and that place was really valuable for learning my shit.

Glad to see nearly all from what I can remember is still in place.

Yeah that's pretty much what happened. I was really considering trying to sort it out myself at one point and seeing how much it would cost to buy the data but then Steve worked it out not long after. Not sure why it went down again though. I spoke to Steve briefly not long ago but didn't think to ask.

Yeah I was hoping it'd come back again. I did ask him but I never got a reply, but that was on Insta.
