POLL: Magic Carpet, Hot Rod, or Even Steven?
« on: March 23, 2024, 10:08:27 AM »
Just curious what people are riding these days!

Magic Carpet = Board wider than trucks
Advantages: Lighter Board, Easier Flip Tricks

Hot Rod = Trucks Wider than Board
Advantages: Better turning, More stable on grinds

Even Steven = Board same width as trucks

Curious to hear others viewpoints on advantages / disadvantages as well

Idk

Magic carpet. That scoop. Plus I want to just skate like Guy Mariano and he was hitting hand rails in the 90s in 5.2 or even 5.0 Ventures.

Magic carpet aka hoverboard almost always.
Just setup an 8.25 with Indy 129s. Years ago did 8.75ish on 129s but it was a little too sketchy on transition. I like the feeling of locking into grinds more in the centre of my foot too.
I'm tall, deceptively heavy and have big feet so I bend axles and maybe it's just in my head but I feel like narrower trucks are less likely to bend.

Good idea brother Rawbertson.

Magic carpet. I've gone deeper into since last tally. 9+6.1 and 8.75+ 5.8 as of the last two.

Hot rodding is way more visible around here in 24. I can think of more than one other local whos magic carpet and not riding a shape.

8.25 even steven, but will occasionally skate 8.38 and 8.5 so sometimes magic carpet. Def prefer magic carpet over hotrod

i never get it. people say:

1. pointy kicks make your scoop easier.
2. magic carpet make your scoop easier.

it is just don't make sense to me, one of them must be false. or i just don't get it.

if you keep your truck smaller, doesn't it means that you make your kick act like fuller?

Ok

Magic carpet.

8.125s feeling more right on 8.0 trucks than 8.25 put me on this path.
Led to my ATV set up being an 8.5 decks on 8.25 or Classic 33s.

Magic carpet. 8.25 on Venture 5.25 lo’s.
And that’s because I like the lo’s and 5.25 is the biggest size that they make them in.

Deck and trucks same width but now I would like to try magic carpet. I have Ventures 5.2 and Indy 139 so I should buy a 8.38 deck and try it

.

I like to use these combinations for my current setups:

149s on 8.38 with wheels no wider than 34 mm (Classic 54 / 55, Radial 53 / 54, Conical Full 54 mm)

149s on 8.5 with wheels around 35 to 36 mm (Classic 56, Radial 56 mm or similar)

159s on 8.62 with wheels around 35 mm (Classic 56 or 58 mm)

159s on 8.75 with wheels around 35 to 36 mm (Conical Full 56, Classic Full 56 mm or similar)

169s on 9.0 with wheels around 35 mm (Classic 56 or 58 mm)

The axles might sit just in or just out on certain board widths, but using different wheels and also where washers are, eg three on the inside, or only one on the inside, will give a bit more width or a bit less width.

I like the wheels to sit in line with the board, not outside though, but can sit slightly inside.

When I had the 8.125 black eagle I had 139s on it with fat wheels, but then went with 144s with more normal width wheels which worked well too.

I talk too much about skateboards.  Sorry.

Always preferred either Even Steven or a slight hot rod, like 8.38 deck with 8.5 axle trucks

I thought magic carpet would have been way more popular!

The reason it scoops better is you can dig your heels in and the wheels will lift sooner on the thinner trucks because of the geometry.

Magic carpet. To me it feels like I have bigger margin for error. Say for crooked grinds where you really want ur weight on the front foot and heel. Since the wheels is closer to the center of the deck, its much easier to lock in.

Line of evolution:

8 inch axle on 8.1 deck
144 on 8.25
149 on 8.3
159/151 on 8.5

All in all a tendency for the hot rod.

i like hot rodding but my current tastes dont allow for it
magic carpet aint bad at all
while cool-guying is a real phenomenon, studies show that 83% of all cool-guying incidents can be attributed to the cool-guyee being an awkward weirdo

Magic carpet (by the wheel location partially determined by number of washers) by only an 1/8” - 1/16” on either side.

Even steven just looks funny.

I used to always hot rod, but lately either even or slight magic carpet is doing it for me. I'm honestly surprised so many people in the comments are team magic carpet

8.25 deck, 8.5 trucks, two washers on the inside, 54mm conical fulls. Almost flush with deck, ever so slightly to the magic carpet direction
