3 months alcohol free
« on: February 21, 2021, 10:29:33 AM »
Anyone on here in the process of quitting alcohol? I’ve made it 3 months so far.  I can honestly say my mood has just been 10x better. I love looking forward to an alcohol free life now.

I know I fuck around and say some dumb shit on here sometimes, but SLAP has indirectly helped me through this and I thank you all for that. From reading other people’s experiences to just going down the SLAP rabbit hole as a way to distract myself from drinking. Shout out to all the SLAPPERS on here who are going through this also. We are in this together.

Now if only Governor Murphy can just sign the damn marijuana bill already..I need legal weed in my life.

Fuck yeah buddy, keep going !

I’ve never been too much of a drinker but over the last year I’ve found myself drinking less and less. I bought a 12 pack on the first of February and I still have five or six left.

Thanks bro. I wish I did this a long time ago, but at the time I was afraid of losing friends or missing out on things because everything always seemed to revolve around drinking, but now that I’m getting a little older I’ve matured and realized that I just need to do what’s best for me.

I wished that I was able to handle it in moderation like that. I envy people like you. No matter how many times Ive told myself I would have “just one beer” it would just turn into a big drunken shit show. Staying at the bar till 2 a.m. walking home, puking, terrible hangover, and hating myself the next day. Alcohol does not mix well with my emotions either. Always in pissy depressing moods and shit when I drink. I don’t want to be like that around anyone anymore.

Fuck yeah dude I’m so stoked for you!

Those first three months are arguably the most difficult. You just gotta maintain my dude!

I’ve been sober for five years, but I distinctly remember being in your shoes my dude.

Keep that shit going. If you ever need someone to talk to pm and I’ll gladly drop what I’m doing to talk.

wish I could gnar ya for this.

A few years back that 12 pack was a Friday night.

I have friends that were like you and seeing them in that state just made me not want to get drunk; couple beers and I was out and back home because I knew once they got a certain kind of drunk shit would go down. Sure I've partied hard in the past, but it only took one black out to realize binge drinking was serious business and just not my thing. I know more than a handful of people who got DUI's over the years, so i guess I used them as an example of what I didn't want to be.

The important thing is you've realized it was a problem and DID something about it. That's awesome because so many folks just don't do anything about it and it messes them up later in life. Seriously, congrats to you, I've seen so many people lose everything to the drink.

Good shit my man! Keep it up!
The 27th will be three years for me. When I was 19-23 I worked at a bar and would get free drinks after work, which inevitably led to me drinking 5ths of whiskey by myself at home like a bum. Was never a beer drinker, always had to have the hooch.
Same thing for me, I had no self control. Have an addictive personality so that wasn't doing me any favors. Got to the point where falling down the steps to take a piss at my house became a regular thing. I was turning into Mr. Lahey.
Long story short I ended up hospitalized with multiple stomach ulcers due to all the liquor and puking. Got diagnosed with UC and Dr's told me that if I kept it up I'd seriously regret it. Was a big wake up call being only 25 at the time.

It’s so fucking hard to quit drinking. I get home from work and the first thing I do is grab a couple shitty 10% beers and some soft tacos. I used to be way worse, chugging liquor and whatnot but my girlfriend’s been keeping me straight. I’m on my way though.

Nice work!

I always do Dry January but this year I kept it going. My plan was to stay dry at least until I got both doses of the Covid Vaccine. Now that I have, I still have no plan to drink. I wouldn't say I struggled with alcohol but through 2020 it certainly become a crutch. So far, the biggest benefit is great sleep. I also cut way back on sugar and I've noticed all my aches and pains have considerably diminished.

I was hitting the bottle way too hard before COVID so when quarantine hit I just started blacking out every night for months on end. It got bad enough that I had to do a 3 day detox back in November. I’ll have 90 days on wednesday. I’m definitely taking a long break from it until I feel a little more mentally healthy and develop some better impulse control/management. Congrats to everyone who is quitting/taking a break/has quit!

Keep it up man, three months is impressive. I've been alcohol free for 53 days and counting now. The r/stopdrinking subreddit is really helpful and a great support group. One quote I've come across on there is, "no one regrets not drinking the night before." That quote has helped me when I really just wanted to get drunk after a stressful day.

hey dude. good for you. those first few months can be really hard, but if you can ride the PMA, the first year, for me anyways, wasn't the hardest. It was years 2 and 3 that were harder, but worry on that when you get there! It's important to stay where you are in the now. I'm not a meeting guy, no NA or AA, and my family is a bunch of alkies so I couldn't count on them for support, but staying busy with new stuff was incredibly helpful for me. I wrote about it a lot at first too.

I stopped drinking like 5.5 years ago and it's been a net positive, for sure. When I stopped, I was drinking 6-10 IPAs at least 5 days per week at home, solo. Most of the time it was heady beer to start at home then I'd be at the bar to end the night with PBRs and a few whiskey shots. Then throw in the nights with dates or chilling with people from work and it was turning out to be a fat amount of money and even more time and health than I could handle. When I quit, it was initially with the goal of a month. I was in Maine, drinking bloody Maria's one Sunday, and I realized it wasn't getting me drunk- going from sober to either angry or brown out was becoming a pattern and I just decided to dry out for a spell. it was right before I was going to work on a new farm and the dudes I was working with were ripping drunks who started bright and early. After a few months I decided to keep with it when I saw how profitable it was. If you can stay above water, accountability is minimal when you work for yourself/independent contractor, so I kind of knew that it was a necessity to maintain the freedom of doing pretty much whatever I wanted. Cut out the booze and the blow went away, no more cigs, etc. I might not be the most knowledgable worker, but I'm offered work all the time because I don't drink or get fucked up. Stopping drinking is really, really one of the best things I've done. Fuck, no more driving home or just around when I shouldn't be, no more shady plays with fucking losers, no more cigarette hangovers. Damn. Hell ya.

Keep it up G, not tryna steal your glory. stay safe man!

I think I might hop back on this.  I was able to make it 47 days this summer without drinking and I felt incredible.  I drink 7 - 10 ounces of tequila 4-5 days a week.  It's basically making me exhausted and harder to concentrate, while only providing 2-3 hours of enjoyment from it.

With the pandemic and winter, unfortunately it's all I look forward to somedays.

Good work DD. I have had multiple attempts at giving up the booze, and multiple spectacular failures between 3 and 6 months so stay vigilant. Everyone's different of course. I have 18 months up now. Feeling good.

Thanks for the kind words and support everyone. I really appreciate it. Also, do not be afraid to PM me if you’re in the same boat and need some support.

@Pete- Yeah man I’ve been thinking about getting a card for a little while now, but with NJ legal weed on the horizon I thought maybe there wasn’t any point to it anymore? Then again, even if Murphy signs the bill to decriminalize/legalize it, it would still be a while before shops open to the public anyway. I will definitely talk to doctor about it.

Congratulations dude. It's no easy feat, you should feel proud.  If things ever feel hard just remember that it's only today you have to worry about. Don't drink today, that's it.

I started trying in earnest to give it up 3 years ago. The first 6 months were up and down but then I got the hang of it. I've had two beers in the 2.5 years since then. Hard to say why I drank them, it wasn't coming from a place of stress, just more of a "would I even like this anymore?" and no, no I do not.

I wish I had a more eloquent way of saying this but what my sobriety has shown me is that it's really all about love and trying to create more love and positive energy in this world, in whatever ways you can. I had so much negativity inside and feeling that burden lift was amazing. It's always going to be hard though, the stress of the past year has made so many of my anxieties and bad habits resurface and having to approach them head on is fucking awful, but I know it's gotta be done.\

Keep keeping on Dirk. I watched Boogie Nights finally about a month ago and it's just so fucking entertaining.

I quit alcohol not intentionally or because I ever had a problem with it, but because I like being able to get in my car at any time and take off.  I was never a huge drinker but have always been deathly afraid of driving after imbibing, even just one beer could have me feeling drunk enough to be convinced I would blow over the limit.  And that’s when the limit used to be .12 instead of .08.
Anyways, I’m the guy at the bar having a coke or a root beer.  Anybody ever go to a bar and ask for a ginger ale and they mix coke and sprite?  Fucking putrid.
Also, I read this(and a few other articles from the site) from time to time because I find it reassuring and helps me remember to respond to the question “why aren’t you drinking?” With irreverence instead of embarrassment.

Congrats Man! I've seen a lot of friends and family go down some dark paths from drinking.

I used to drink a lot a few years ago and i've definitely slowed down a lot. Working on getting to the point where I don't want to at all.
