Carlos Ruiz... I liked the mini documentary about him. The documentary really humanized a dude that was easy to hate. And, fucking Knox and Aaron Snyder are so annoying Carlos seems charming comparison.

Fuck I wonder what Carlos's image would have been if he didn't get the absolute worst song/edit ever. I understand Blind was trying to appeal to kids at the time, but man, Dennis Martin introduced Carlos to the world in the worst way possible... it pains me to say it, but dude's image probably would have been a lot better if he was found by the chief. Although, probably for the better as the chief would have exploited the shit out of him and Creager was honest about what a pro career actually looks like.

Thanks for sharing this, I'd never seen it before. Definitely changed my perspective of him.

Pick 3 from the Menace team. I was a huge fan of the brand, but seeing them skate in person was really underwhelming. Pupecki spent an hour setting up a board and didn't land anything. He also skated REALLY slow.

Very controversial, but the truth hurts. About a year ago, I tried explaining this to my non-skater friend who said his favorite skater of all-time was Rodney Mullen. It was impossible to get him to understand why style usually trumps heavy technical skill. I just stressed how Mullen looks very awkward while skating (mainly due to his freestyle champ foundation); not to mention his lack of fashion sense. That being said, 1989 Rubbish Heap into 1990 Rodney during (his final freestyle days) looked pretty rad in pegged pants and World t-shirts that weren't XXL. I have so much love and respect for the Mutt, but yeah... aesthetically speaking, he's a bit of a mess.

this is interesting. but yeah, as much of a legend he is i'll never rewatch any of his footage cause i actually cant stand looking at it. aesthetics are a HUGE part of the appeal of skateboarding, like it or not.

So in a conversation of the worst skateboarders in history you bring up the guy that invented the flat ground Ollie, the kickflip, and the 360 flip. I don’t like watching him skate either but put some respect on his name.

After reading this dumpster fire of a thread, I think I figured out three that fit both criteria.

1.) Jay Adams and friends picked a fight with a gay couple and said some horrible racist and homophobic shit to the one Black dude.  After assaulting him, he left as his friends killed the guy.  His religiously-based homophobia continued up until his death.  On the skating front, he ironically got his whole style from a Black surf/skate pioneer in Larry Bertlemann.  Old ass skaters still lionize him (source: https://www.vice.com/en/article/jmbbk3/maybe-we-shouldnt-be-so-sentimental-about-a-gay-bashing-skateboarder-658)

2.) Gator had his heyday but it REALLY didn't translate after vert died.  Dude sucked at street, even for the time.  He punched that kid in Australia, became a bible thumper, and then somehow still stalked his ex girlfriend before raping and killing her best friend. 

3.) 1010 was more image over results, as his reign on (or near) the top was short like leprechauns.  He keeps saying and doing racist and kooky shit.  It's lame that he gets a pass from some of his friends in the industry via his sponsors, but even skateboarding has a good ol' boys network.  God bless Peanut Brown.

I've been told that this dude had the literal "shittiest upbringing" with parents on drugs and whatnot... I've seen him around skating over the years... don't know him personally at all so I won't speak about him as a person. But, I was there the day he shot that full pipe photo. I have been around a lot of gnarly shit in my days, but this was one of the gnarliest things I have ever seen in person, hands down. He rolled up while we were at the same ditch, he had a "filmer" there (basically his friend with a digi-cam type thing) and was like "I'm gonna loop this".... all of us were like sure, sure (that full pipe is not easy to skate in any way, shape or form plus it was damp inside) within like 10 tries he was looping it and sliding out. Pulled it a few tries later, then started trying to loop revert it while upside down, which he pulled but slid out. I was with some heavy concrete dudes and we all were there totally shocked....

I had a similar experience having seen and skated with them a few times.  A lot of shitty early 90s attitude to go with it too.

Corey O'Brien had one of the best selling models on Santa Cruz in their heyday and I don't think he skated anything but curbs and mini ramps.  Cool 80s hair though.
Eric Sanderson is a good choice for this category.
