Identifying Wood
« on: March 03, 2021, 05:53:31 AM »
I know a handful of board companies (Powell Peralta, etc...) are putting out birch decks these days, and it can be pretty hard to tell the difference when shopping online, since a lot of shops don't bother mentioning.

Is there much of a difference in the strength vs a traditional maple deck? Has anyone even ridden a birch deck that can confirm how they feel in comparison? Does birch suck, or is it a genuinely good alternative? The internet is unsurprisingly pretty devoid of solid information, and I'd trust my local witch-doctor before I'd trust a company statement about them.

How's the feel? Pop response? Does it flex the same way? Should I invest in Birchcoin?

Is Powell really using birch? That’s crazy if true.

Powell has been using birch for over 10 years at least. Its' always been in their catalog, website, and product description. I do knot know if/how they label birch boards. Never saw one in real life.

There are Mini Logo and also Powell decks made out of birch .
They are pretty cheap. Arround 20€ cheaper than maple.
But only for smaler decks 7.5 and bellow.
I know that because the bike shop i work for has access to a b2b distribution .
Customer price arround 40€
Same deck out of maple is 70€
Birch is pretty soft btw.. i dont think a deck out of birch is a real alternative..
Edit: seems like there are also bigger birch boards..

Here's a quick screencap of what I'm talking about. Black Sheep have the wood type listed in the description.

AFAIK : Powell in the US market only has birtch on the cheap completes.  My kids have them.  The Mini Logo decks are maple.   Shhh.... but I actually like the Mini Logo shapes. They are flat and don't necessarily feel great, but for some reason they work better for my flip tricks than just about any other deck.  8" Mini Logo deck and Thunders - I'm gonna land more flips that session.

The cheap Powell complete I got for my nephew is birch and I wouldn't skate one.  They are light but feel brittle.  I think I wouldn't be able to the wood off the hop, I'd just identify it as a board that's is crap....

Great for a 5 year old though....

I ended up with a Mini Logo when I stopped at a seaside longboard shop to replace a cracked deck. I more or less hated it and ended up giving it away, but holy shit could I flip that thing. I don't know what the secret was, but there was something there that went wild under my feet
This is not my SOTY. I'm telling my kids there was no SOTY for 2021
