I'm never really sure what's garage rock and what isn't, but check out
www.grunnenrocks.nl and go to radio.
this dutch dude has had a webradioshow for years all good stuff
like the dirtbombs and all kinds of rock 'n roll, garage sorta stuff, as well
as things more towards punk, check it out i'm pretty sure you'll like it.

garage is just kindof a raw form of rock. i guess you could say the stooges were the most famous one. the thermals are definately sick too

I've never really understood the meaning of "garage rock" coming from England, where garage is a really shitty type of r&b dance/techno/rap combo.   The yardbirds however are one of my favourite bands, and if someone said the stooges I should probably mention MC5.

that's "ger-ouge." you can't play dirty rock if you're saying it like that.

Accent doesn't translate well through type. It was all the rage though around the time I moved, when the spastic lyrical stylings of Genius Cru could be heard blasting from the windows of many-a gary boy's souped up ford fiesta.

Anyway, early kinks is fantastic, and seriously, MC5.

going through my itunes, here's some stuff to check out.  These arent all pure garage rock, but they all have some kind of garage rock/psych influence.

13th floor elevators
the animals
Brian Jonestown
the Chocolate Watchband
Deadboy and the Elephant Men
the Electric Prunes
the Faces
The Small Faces
Nancy Sinatra with Lee Hazelwood
the Greenhornes
the Jam
MC5
Mission of Burma
the Only Ones
Primal Scream
the Replacements
the Warlocks
Witchcraft
the Zombies
and also check out the "Nuggets" compilations.  Tons of good stuff on those
