Independent 159’s

The current 159s came out during the transition from stage 10 to stage 11. They were actually the first stage 11s to drop but weren't called 11s until Stage 11 officially became a thing.

I think 159’s are stage 10, great stage so far

i’m unclear on your meaning. stage 10s were shorter than stage 11 (53.5 vs 55). would you expound?

also taking recommendations for decks with the 159s: iso smallest possible popsicle.

Yeah this was what confused a lot of people.

Stage IX were the computer designed trucks, but only in the smaller sizes, so 129 and 139.  The 149, 159 and 169 were still a big old clunky version of the hanger which almost looked weird on the newer baseplates but that was their thing.

Then Stage X was just the upgrade to a solid baseplate again, but as they were working on fixes for the wider trucks, the Stage X v2 was as Frank said, the first of the prototypes for Stage XI.

I just bought some new old stock of the v2 159s recently and they are awesome, compared to the other older stages and models in the wider sizes.

Not sure about timeframe for any of this, but I think it was only a year between the v2 and then all the Stage XI variants.


If it was 2003 for Stage IX, then 2009 for Stage X and 2012 / 2013 for Stage XI, maybe 2011 or so was when these ones came out in limited quantities with minimal info on them at the time, as far as I know.

I thought Grant was on 149s, but Peter Hewitt on ti 159s on the 8.38 size boards always tripped me out.

Setting up that exact combination with some 56 mm Classics just looks so weird, even with no washers, but that is what he rides and almost every time he posts, someone asks if the trucks are too wide and he replies Nope or Can't see the wheels or something similar, but I can see that being a very stable big bowl and vert type setup.


This was his most recent board setup post, going to the shorter 8.4 but still with ti 159s and 57 mm Radials.

Nope. As mentioned above it was purely a timing thing with the rerelease of 159s coming-out  just before Stage 11. 159s had been absent from Indy's line up for Stage 10 and came out right at the very end. Indy essentially premiered Stage 11s with 159s but they were still called Stage 10s until the other sizes were ready.

Yep that’s what i have them on, so they are still in the rotation

Is there any reason to go any size bigger? Imo not really

And also if you are gonna ride this size of Indy I feel  like you might as well go standard and get the full height. Forged hollow is a lot more practical though which is what I have. I guess depends what kind of wheels you want to run. 56mm with forged works pretty well.


In a few years I wanna set up Indy 159 standard with fat full 60mm f4 97a with 9” board. Could be a decent cruiser

I’m currently in doubt about getting these or the 169s. I recently got an Anti Hero Grosso 9.25 shaped deck. I’m currently skating it with Ace AF1 66’s that I had laying around but I want to switch to Indy. The local skateshop owner skates the same deck with Indy 159’s, but I feel like 169s could provide a bit more stability at the cost of making the setup more bulky.

What do you think?

If you are sure you want to stay at that deck size go with 169.   159  will work for some from 9.25-8.5 as mentioned even 8.3.

Those Grosso 9.25 are 8.9 at the front axle and 8.6 at the back (if that) from setting one up a while back, so although I know others have 169s on it, the 159s just seem to fit a little better.

Ace have shorter hangers with longer axles, so check to see how much that sits out, because the Indy trucks will be on either side of that, 169s sitting out, 159s sitting in, even by only a few mm in total.

As to which is better, that is up to you - some people run trucks under the board with little wheel sight, others run them with trucks and wheels wider, even if they don't see the wheels a lot.

Wider = more stability
Not as wide = lighter (marginally) and more nimble.

The choice is yours really.


I have both and they are each good in their own way, but also depends on where you like to sit on coping or how a wider truck feels to grind / turn on as well.

People have even put 149s with super fat wheels on them and still not looked too bad, but wheel shape and size also has something to do with it as well.



* For what it is worth, I thought the last board Grosso posted had 159s before he went to Ace (but probably were 169s after all), but that doesn't mean people can't change it up and do their own thing either.  Can't find where he says it, but 159 or 169s are still ok.  His setup video from 2012 he says 169s, with the close up showing all washers on the outside to get the wheels in closer.
