This is me, apparently. First time i've done one of these tests. I'm not too well read and my political literacy is weak at best, but I have been involved in direct action in the past and spent time with a lot of groups that have a similar outlook on things. Wish I had something of substance to add. But i'm happy this thread exists.

@Sila I just had to say that your compass is fucking beautiful and god damn it were happy to have you

I took the test and I scored "Emma Goldman". Stoked!

Beautiful!!!

I landed at Kropotkin, which obviously is making my day substantially better hahaha

Yeah, it is not sexy to implement new slightly more progressive policies but this is the reality. Trust us, ex-commies, shit don't work.

I think a good question to consider is, "What equals working?" What key variables define a working system?

..... But if we are going to evaluate what works and what doesn't, laying out the criteria we are using is important.

You make good points and seem to be waay above the average lefty on this board. I don't want to accuse you of romanticizing the Union, but... Life in constant fear of being told on by some twat and sent to Siberia for 20 years fucking sucked. Empty stores fucking sucked. Coupon shit sucked. Waiting lists for even the most basic electronics or even a fucking garage sucked. Near zero choice of work/city fucking sucked. Waiting 25 years to move to Leningrad fucking sucked. Being fed propaganda  at all times sucked. It was so fucking aweful..

I mean, yeah, maybe it was not the purest commie/socialist state by a long shot, but it is not like we have that many states to compare to... What some obscure little hippy place did for a year does not count, we need large samples.

I just don't see how plan economy + state enforced everything does not suck. Then again, maybe growing up there affected me too much, everything fucking sucked. People don't escape Cuba and risk dying without a reason.

Also, I do understand that there is way less freedom in the West than people think there is but you can't even compare.

Don't read it as a diss, because it is not and I respect your ability to think. I'm just sick of the average American lefty who watched some DylanBurns/Vaush/Hassan shit and is now telling old commies about how wrong we are and how great a political system that does not even know to set wages is.

A lot of that romanticism is from high school or early college aged kids who don't know history.
I get frustrated when my (i live in texas) colleagues think I'm a radical communist/socialist for wanting universal healthcare...

Hell my family were red blooded republicans until mom got breast cancer and it nearly bankrupted us while dad was making 100k a year in a low cost of living small city in a low cost of living state with no income taxes. She didn't even need Chemo, she just had to have breasts removed.

I think moving away from capitalism is foolish, but I don't see why that means we have to also bow down to corporations and let them have nearly unlimited influence politically, especially if they aren't going to pay their share of taxes. I understand that I consume from these corporations daily, and I don't think they need to be regulated to death, but I know first hand working in an energy-focused economic area that they will cut corners that lead to safety concerns for residents without regulation. We have environmental problems locally and higher rates of cancer, and a few chemical/oil production plant scared every other year or so.

like everything there is a balance that must be found. Encourage growth while maintaining the city on a hill standard that we fought for.

I think city on a hill is just an allusion to an ideal, something glorious to aspire to. Unfortunately, in the American imagination, it's a reference to Reagan and his talk of unfettered capitalism.

We also when talking about long bread lines and empty stores can not ignore the brutal and crippling sanctions that the US as the global hegemon were and still are placing on these countries. The reason why our shelves are so full is because we have turned most of the world into our colonies. It does not matter to our government if there are shortages in vassal states as long as the spice is still flowing to America. The spice must flow. Also we must move away from capitalism or those same corporations will continue to take as much as they possibly can. Capitalism and the capital that corporations accumulate will continue to make them more powerful.

Also those power and energy companies do all those things because they're not regulated to death. They do not deserve your sympathy or empathy because they will take the route that gives your entire town cancer 100% of the time unless we take away their ability to. And you're right we do need to have a balance because right now these companies firmly are tipping the scales in their favor through lobbying and corruption to stay as unregulated as they possibly can

https://workingclasshistory.com/category/podcast/

The absolute best podcast for the history of the global  labor movement. Their research is meticulous and the content they produce is phenomenal. I support their Patreon and I ordered their book but havenít gotten it yet and Iím so excited for it. Hereís a link to their webstore if you want to also support some amazing people doing amazing things. Theyíve got a lot of amazing shit in there.

nice to have a thread like this.
I would consider myself an anarchist without adjectives. I am still pretty new to anarchism, I used to be more of a classic Marxist.

Which is fitting, since the Chomsky Reader was a go to for me in and post high school. I also "repurposed" a copy of "A People's History of the United States" from my high school.

Chomsky is a real mensch, but also a fucking genius and an absolute pragmatist. Howard Zinn should also have been right in that grouping so you knocked that shit out the park my dude. Peopleís History is such an incredible read, that shit is what pushed me over the edge to peruse a degree in history.

Also here is a new daily segment Iím posting in this thread called

TODAY IN LEFTIST HISTORY

June 14th:

1381: The Tower of London is sacked and two powerful lords are killed during the Peasants Revolt. Fuck yeah.

1830: French Colonization of Algeria begins. Boo.

1872: Canada legalizes Unions. Fuck yeah.

1877: Ida MacLean is born, pioneering Biochemist and ardent feminist.

1894: Josť Carlos MariŠtegui is born, influential South American Marxist. Meh, you know my feelings.

1898: Theobald Wolfe Tome FitzGerald is born, painted the Irish Republic Flag that was raised during the Easter Rising.

1904: Margaret Bourke-White is born, first American to photograph the Soviet Union during Stalinís 5 year plan.

1928: Che Guevara is born. Yíall know my feelings.

1940: Nazi occupation of Paris begins. Boo.

1946: Trump is born. Boo.

1959: Dominicans in Exile arrive back in the DR to over throw the regime of Rafael Trujillo. Fuck yeah. Only four survived. Boo.

1968: Salvatore Quasimodo dies, Noble Prize winning author and ardent Anti Fascist. RIP.
