front 5050 back 180
« on: June 09, 2021, 01:55:17 PM »
Whats the trick to these? Never been natural feeling for me, its almost like my whole body is stuck and wont spin, or my board starts to flip as soon as I try coming off.

I start turning my shoulders backside while still in the 5050. When I get to the end (never tried a mid ledge pop out), my body is already nearly 90 degrees and the pop out just swings out naturally. Also try to keep legs nice and bent during the grind. Straight legs tend to flip the board on exit.

I've also seen people wind up the opposite way to get a good unwind on the back 180 out. Never been my technique but worth a try if my way doesn't work for you.

If you're talking about coming out at the end of the ledge, it's all shoulders and looking at your back foot for me. Look at your back foot, which turns those shoulders in the right direction, give it a little pop if you're feelin' it, and it should come around pretty easily. To keep it from flipping, I'd say try to keep your weight more centered to avoid being too heavy on one side.

If you're talking about coming out in the middle, I wanna know the secrets to this, can't get my board to come with me when rotating backside for shit. I really want this one though.

like others said if you can get your shoulders round so you're facing your back foot while grinding then the 180 will come pretty naturally.

Extra tip though - get your trucks up on the ledge as much as possible, so your backside wheels are locked right up on the edge of it, and get more of your weight on your toes when preparing to come out. Otherwise the board tends to flip over when you try to exit

while i'm not too great at the trick i think i have it consistent enough to give some advice, as said below if you're not fully locked into it, the board will flip and im still waiting for the day someone does fs 5050 bs flip out on accident

https://imgur.com/GH3KSlB

i find leaning over it helps, start turning bs maybe an inch or two before the end of the ledge, then just lift and give it a little scoop up.

It all in the shoulders.
Try to scoop Bs 180s down small drops/curbs without popping at all.
Its easier if you grind a little longer.

I’ve been working on slappy front 5050 backside flip out mid curb for a minute. I’ve done some sloppy ones, still working on the clean one. To me, the secret to coming out mid ledge is in the back foot, and you have to kind of whip it like a late back 180. Like people have said, it helps to be locked in solid to a front 50. I then start to come out like you normally would and I then I feel like I whip the board around with my back foot like a late back 180. I would practice doing back 180s off a sidewalk without popping the hard way to get the feel for it. Fun trick that looks good.

I can do it and I'm trash.

Speed, pop, style. Nothing trash about that clip.

I'm yet to get to a park where I can really try, but you all have given me a better idea of how to get it around. I have a box at home, but it's only 4 feet long. You're of as soon as you're on and my feet aren't that quick.

I feel like I've seen Tom Knox do a sick one mid ledge... might be worth studying that footy if it exists and I'm not just dreaming about how it'd look if he did it.

For me it's almost like a late back 180. I'll begin to come out of the front 5050 turning frontside like normal, and then once I'm ready to get my back truck off, that's when the back 180 starts. It's almost like a frontside shifty to back 180 like I think Brandon Nguyen does. Now that I think about it he does those backside shifty to front 180 so nevermind but it's a similar concept. Try riding almost parallel to the coping on top of the ledge and then practice alley oop back 180ing off the ledge the way you would for a front 5050 back 180. Once you are comfortable with those doing it out of the front 5050 will come more naturally. Front 5050 backside shove it out is a similar feeling trick and is easier imo.

Op, you ok man? Being real here, you doin alright?

much easier in the middle of the ledge imo. the key is to scoop with a lot of pressure on your back foot toes. if you start the scoop without that pressure, it's just gonna flip

Just did my first one recently, not sure I can share real secrets but here is what I did. First I just stood on the ledge in a  5050 position and tried to understand the ollie out movement while turning. I needed to ollie as high as I could and away from the ledge first, then turning the shoulders and mostly the hip. This way I never hit the ledge which was what I dreaded the most. Eventually I got it down while grinding and rolled away from a few. Still not turned 100% but it was a good start. I guess a long ledge with sharp edges would be the best to learn, also it helps if the ledge is on the higher side. Sorry for hijacking this thread, the movement for me is completely different to the 180 out at the end of the ledge.

If you wanna pop out mid ledge, I'd say you need to be really good at high backside 180s, and you should be able to pop them straight up. When I do them over traffic cones, I do a straight ollie while starting to turn my head and shoulders backside, then I whip the board around while leveling out. Sometimes I even ollie a bit frontside shifty for swag points. When doing a frontside 50-50, you can't just scoop a low backside 180 because you need to get away from the ledge, and you'll also likely slip off the ledge. Being able to ollie away from the ledge and do a late 180 is probably the key here.

If you just wanna 180 off the edge, then I guess it's just like doing it from a backside 50-50, which is obviously the easier one. You might still slip off, though, so I'd go with a straight ollie late 180 in either case.

If your board is flipping out like a backside flip you can just press down with your Toes a bit to level it out.
Or Ollie off just before the end of the ledge then start rotating once you're in the air

So as long as you aren't struggling to land regular 50-50's this is a really easy trick to learn.

When you approach any grind with a trick out you will want to adjust your lock-in to accommodate the movement you are going to do.

For a frontside 50-50 180 out, you don't want your truck hanger to be hanging off the ledge, you want the sidewall of your backside wheels to be right against the ledge during the 50-50.

Once you start doing that you can snap the 180 out almost as easy as on flatground. Dont be scared to dig your heels sideways into the ledge! By getting locked in with the wheels against the ledge you can push yourself backwards away from it, thus pushing the 180/many tricks out of the way of the ledge and onto flat.

Dig your heels in just enough that you can push off the ledge backwards while snapping a normal 180. You might have them really ugly at first I think it's normal if you haven't done a new trick out of a grind before. You might have to fling yourself far out at first but keep doing them and you will have more control over how far away you push off the ledge.
