I quite liked how 149s felt on an 8.25 with 52mm classics. Louie and Mason both run this setup and you see how well it works for them.

BDK and Ishod still do this and in pro setups I can’t recall a single rider going wider than deck.

Dont want to derail the thread but what is BDK's setup?

Last I saw 147 Thunders, wood risers, 54 Conical Fulls and a 8.125-8.25 deck. Someone posted a pic of him on Aces recently probably got the free set they’re sending tons of pros to try before the pros just stick with what they’ve got.

I think most people ran 149 on 8.25 pretty comfortably until 144 and whatever other truck brand’s equivalent came out. That was me. 8.25-8.6: I ran 149 only.

If the 8.25 tapers towards the tail and nose, then go with 144. If it doesn’t taper much, 149 is great. Stable and also gives you flexibility to go up to 8.5 if you’re leaning to that’s side of 8.25 with decks .

Either one will be solid for 8.25 decks tho!
[close]

8.25/149 was the norm for ages, lots of pros still run it.

Weird, got any examples? I usually see 139 or 144 in those setup videos on YouTube or Nine Club Highlights but I also don’t pay a ton of attention.

Gartland rode 149 on 8.25"

Didn't find any others in the My Indies series - but these stuck out:

Armanto did skate 149 on 8".  Still on 149s - not sure about the 8"

Allysha Le 149 on 8"

I ride an 8.25 as my regular setup and use 144s. Before this size existed a few years ago, I rode 139s on 8.25 decks. For me, 149s are for 8.5 decks.

I see it go both ways pretty evenly. To be fair, gartland was a giant rail chomper, lizzie and allysha both skate transition so it makes sense for them to skate bigger trucks compared to someone who's a bit more tech or skates ledges, flatground and stuff.

I'm also currently a bit torn about this (except with ventures and 8.38 boards).

In my experience 8.5 trucks definitely feel more stable, wheelbite less, lock into grinds better and are just a bit more comfortable in general.

8.25 trucks do have slightly better leverage for flip tricks, makes flip tricks that I struggle with a little easier. They also turn a bit sharper which is important for ventures. The wheels jam a bit less for nose/tailslides.

Its a bit harder to aim and hold grinds, especially on chunky ledges. And I notice myself falling off my board a lot more when I don't land perfectly centred. This seems to be partially due to wheelbite and partially due to the trucks just being a little more tippy, little less stable.

Will probably need some more time to get used to the 8.25 trucks, but if I grow to prefer it (I do have 3 washers on the inside to pad it out), I could maybe see myself running them on 8.5 boards to make the extra board a bit more manageable.

I went from 139s to 144s on my 8.25 awhile back. Last weekend I put some 149s on it and couldn't even kickflip! Way too wide for me. After having the 149's on there the 144s now look so small. haha  I tried, not for me and the way I skate.

I'm with Gravette here. 149s are unwieldy on an 8.25". 144 with 8.25" is the perfect combo IMO
This is not my SOTY. I'm telling my kids there was no SOTY for 2021

144 / 148 on 8.38 too, I'm not ready for the world of 8.5" trucks.

Just set this up as a versatile cruiser.
8.18 FA
144 Indy Hollow (stock)

You ride smaller boards right? This is pretty fun to ride and manageable if you’re still wanting to do some flip tricks too.

Edit: Forgot to mention OJ Keyframes. These wheels have served me fine but would prefer a more classic shape cruiser wheel ( or if I went with a 52 instead of 54). I’m rambling of course. Point is here you can see what the 144 looks like on a (nearly) 8.25 with a wider wheel.

How did you determine 148? I was told 147 by a friend who has skated with him and a few decks in that post were 8in and the trucks look flush.

At the end of the day it comes down to choosing whether to magic carpet, hot rod or match perfectly. There's no right or wrong way. Just preferences.

Had both on a DOA 8.25. The 144s with no special washer configuration made that whole set up. The 149s while workable, felt less responsive.

Never really thought 144s had a place seeing as they’re not far off from the 149.

Skateboarding is a game of mm I guess.

I've pondered make a "My Indys" video.. where I discuss my setup in grand detail and what lack of terrain I skate at this point. "Usually be running these 139s on my football shape at the curbs at this US bank"

Depends on what I am skating.

Flat only? 139/147s
Transition? 44 (classics)/149s
Slappies? Anything works but bulldozing over shit on 8.75/9"+ trucks is something you need to experience for yourself.

All around? 144/148s treat me right as I normally ride 8.25" - I'd rather 8" than 8.5" trucks on 8.25" these days tho for anything other than tranny.

could be wrong but in the third slide his trucks have the orange bushings which come standard in 148s, 147s normally have yellow bushings from my experience.

Waiting for this.
And also day in the life.
And also the video of going back to your childhood spots.

Also, broken record here, but, if I am to skate 8.25, I use 8” trucks, as I like the 7.75-8.25 range of boards, and that size truck works for all of them.
I’ve found no personal advantage to wider than 8” trucks, other than aesthetics, in certain situations.
