Full board graphics or minimal graphics?
« on: November 05, 2021, 04:51:23 PM »
I notice deck brands are beginning to only have graphics between the trucks.
Kinda looks lackluster.
Companies like Quasi and Madness are taking up the whole bottom ply.
What do the Pals prefer?

shapes > graphics
but if both are good then great
while cool-guying is a real phenomenon, studies show that 83% of all cool-guying incidents can be attributed to the cool-guyee being an awkward weirdo

Some days I do prefer a nice minimalist graphic on a nice stain (or even a blank stain), with raw trucks, and white wheels tho.

I like minimal graphics when the the board is fresh, but slide marks look so good on a full graphic.

I generally like graphics between the trucks. I hate when you have a great, full ply graphic, but there's some important element under the trucks, so it looks like shit when you actually set it up.

I love full board graphics they look so sick even when scratched up. Don't get me wrong a nice minimal graphic on a cool stained ply looks fire too. I just prefer a full graphic better

I’ve been grabbing mostly minimal graphics with a lot of woodstain showing, I really like the woodstain look much more than a full board graphic, not sure why, I was even looking at a black label for a cruiser a couple days ago and they one I like had woodstain, I feel like I’m just naturally drawn to it

I prefer a full graphic, even if it's a solid color behind a simple graphic.

I really have started to despise the stained wood grain with a minimal graphic in the middle decks. To me it just comes off as lazy and not wanting to pay an artist for a full graphic. If I wanted wood grain I'd buy a blank. Also I know art is subjective but those Spanky graphics are atrocious, I'm sorry but wtf happened. To Baker/Deathwish/Birdhouse graphics. They really have dropped the ball in my opinion on the graphic side of things.

Wood grain beats plain color 99.99% of the time. Graphics look good if they're kind of busy.
Top graphics are always dumb tho.

I know some woodshops have different options and some really cool stains and combinations of stains, so if a deck has an appealing stain, I am much more likely to want to take the graphic off to see more of the wood than with a board with a less appealing stain, or a natural bottom layer (which I have resprayed over when they were all like that).

At the end of the day though, I have taken off or sprayed over more graphics than I can remember, more so just wanting the certain shape and concave than a specific graphic.

The boards with the best graphics (most being full board graphics) are on my walls, the rest are under my feet, if that makes sense, but there are a few special ones with a lot of wood stain showing through as well.

The wood stain is just trending really hard right now.

Yeah, it’s all about stained wood for me. There’s nothing more disappointing than a deck with a full graphic and when you start scraping through the paint, you find a layer of plain wood underneath.

I’d be perfectly fine with never skating another graphic again so long as the wood had interesting and colorful stains.
This is not my SOTY. I'm telling my kids there was no SOTY for 2021

Minimal af.

Solid color deck with and a graphic in between the trucks.

Decks with an outline or some design all the way around the edge are sick too.

Echoing what @off & @Woodshop have said to some degree, I’m really shape specific, so I choose based on them dims.
Can’t recall a time in the last 10 years that I’ve selected a deck based on its graphics. I’m happy to mask & spray a turd graphic out of existence.
Shits gone in a minute anyway, on account of: old guy, so you know there’s a lot of board/lip slide action going on.

I like full board, psychedlic inspired artwork that actually has time and effort put into it. Not gonna lie, I don't really like most deck graphics coming out nowadays. There's just a lot of cliche minimalist crap, random/incoherent stuff, shitty photos, crappy doodles that aren't funny, etc. Give me some real art that took more than 10 minutes to produce. I would kill for stuff like this printed on a deck:
