What is your filming Set-Up in 2021?
« on: September 08, 2021, 12:46:34 PM »
Hi all,
I suppose there may be a similar thread already, and some similar answers in "Beginner Filmer Looking for Camera Advice",  but I am wondering what everyone is using to film skateboarding in 2021.  I'm looking to buy a camera/lens again, nothing crazy expensive but I want it to look alright if i'm going to spend time filming.  I'm leaning towards going HD but still open to using tapes if it makes sense, though they only seem to be getting more expensive..  any advice/recommendations are appreciated, thanks!

My main filming setup is a Panasonic HPX171 configured for 4x3 HD.

I'd recommend a recent Sony like the AX700, or a GH4 or something. The HPX and shit maybe popular but it doesn't automatically mean it's a good camera. But that's just my thoughts.

Sony A7c
Smallrig cage
Sigma 14-24mm 2.8
Sigma 24-70mm 2.8
Rokinon 12mm 2.8
RodeMic Go with deadcat
10 different godox strobes

I wanted a fullframe mirrorless camera(and lenses) so I could film and shoot stills. It had been a few years since I shot stills, and even longer since I filmed anything. If you go the dslr/mirrorless route just be aware that the costs can add up pretty quick

Main setup:
Sony VX1000 w/ an HVR-MRC1
Century Optics MK1 lens

B-Roll/second angle setup:
Sony TRV-900
(I do have an Opteka 37mm Baby Death if I ever need a second fisheye shot or a camera to quickly whip out, too)

For some people that might be wondering why I'm still using tape on my second setup, that's mainly because I don't often use the TRV to negate the cost of buying another MRC1 since they've gone mad pricy since I bought my first one on the VX. I have also got a bunch of tapes from the years anyways either new or as donations from other peeps. Plus, it's still convenient as a small cam to take out for quick situations without the MRC1 because I can bung in a tape, leave it powered up and bust it out if someone is talking shit or something 'nam saying? But nah, I don't really miss filming with tapes on a daily haha...

If you do want to film with DV don't be put off with a VX2/21, as you can make them look good and they're less prone to busting like the VX1 (at least the 21s don't, as the two I used never give me any problems par a minor glitch here and there). Plus, they're really good in low light and seem to come up for a good price when I've been on fleabay.

I don't have a heap of knowledge of what HD cams are to get, so I imagine others will be more versed to say what's up on that front. But I might be in the same boat on the new cam hunt when my VX1 finally says ta'ra Terry to me...

Hit me up if you ever need any help, I've had all of the main popular HD cameras... plus others.

My favourite has to be my current set up, though. BlackMagic cameras are fucking beautiful.

Canon XA20 w/ Century Mk I (58mm thread mount), Rode VideoMic Pro or StereoMic.

Fully-wide, it's perfect for 4:3, just crop in post. If you want to shoot 16:9, zoom a bit to get the vig you want it works great.

Advantage to a run-and-gun video camera: no need for handle/rig.
Dis-advantage: it's not a DSLR so no photos

XA20 is pretty old at this point, but they've got current models that are the successor to it.

Main camera: Panasonic DVX100. i love this camera because you can get that HD colors feel all on SD. The long lens filming is really good with this, dare i say its the same as an HPX?

Second camera: Sony TRV900. Got that VX feel and its easy to carry around and bring to things that arent skate related.

Main setup:
Sony VX1000 w/ an HVR-MRC1
Century Optics MK1 lens

B-Roll/second angle setup:
Sony TRV-900
(I do have an Opteka 37mm Baby Death if I ever need a second fisheye shot or a camera to quickly whip out, too)

I’m always curious why people go with the baby death on the trv. I got the trv when it was new back around 1999 with the threaded full size MK1. I guess it’s just cheaper/lighter? Doesn’t seem as distorted tho. A homie used to film with it and the clips didn’t look as dope as the MK1.

I didn’t know they ever made a 37mm mount Mk I. That sounds absurd! I’m sure it looks sick tho.

It's not 37mm - it's 58. The TRV thread mount is 52mm. Just need a mellow step up ring.

FWIW there actually is a 37mm MK1.

They've always been super rare and impossible to find footage of.

It's still a baby death though - are you saying that's a different baby death than the usual baby death?

Yep, probably the fact it's cheaper (IIRC £70-80 or cheaper again used). I do have a Raymod that someone sold me super cheap for my VX21 years ago that fits on the TRV and is fairly decent, but I do prefer how the baby death looks especially when you add an extra step up ring. But yeah it's more as a backup cam and I just wanted something that is wide, but not too expensive.

I have a Century Optics baby death, not sure if it's a 'Mk1' version. It's too scratched unfortunately. I paid £60 for it and used it on my old 8mm cam. Look on eBay there's someone selling one for £900 hahaha.

Yeah exactly. No idea if it's wider than the normal MK2 baby death or not, it's been many years since seeing footage/comparisons.

edit: came across an old SP thing that said the MK1 is .4x (compared to normal baby death's .3x) and looks horrible.

not a big difference with the mk1 TBH.
slightly less wide, and the vignetting tends to be blurry with a blue fringing.

the century babydeath mkII is still way better than the big mkII.
Not as good as the big MK1 but really close to it in terms of distorsion.

I want to see footages of the babydeath mk1. it seems like a gem!

xm1/gl1
opteka 0.3x 62mm (58>62)
ordro sl-80 light - havent tried it out much yet, friend randomly gave me it but it'll prolly do the job decently enough.

obviously some bias here since i use it but i think the xm1/gl1 gets more hate than it deserves, mostly down to people who clearly haven't figured out manual settings and instead just shoot auto which looks like shit. personally im pretty happy with the footage i get out of it and will run with it until it breaks.

I recently changed from my HPX171 to the Panasonic HPX250 which has the same mount for the Century Xtreme and discovered that along with the bigger sensor, it's a hell of a lot wider!

Stoked.

hey,

can we see a comparison somewhere ?
also how do you feel about the camera ? it seems bigger / heavier
