Yesterday the news outlets went buckwild while covering the defacing of a George Floyd memorial statue in Manhattan. Of course, the perpetrator was mallgrabbing a skateboard so the headlines plastered everywhere characterize this creep as a "skateboarder". Shit's fucked up.

I politely complied to an interview while at a skatepark by a local paper, just generic questions like "So what do ya think of it?"

He took some photos of me skating the flat bar and I was landing stuff pretty consistently, with a couple of bails. Afterwards I joked with the girl I was seeing at the time about how it's gonna be those typical too-early-mid-pop photos or just a really bad angle on a crooked grind.

Nope it was way worse: wide shot of bailing with arms flailing while running out the momentum, juxtaposed with a bored child on a scooter right next to me.

The caption was "HyenaChaser tests out the rail!"

Great.

That sucks, but someone has to test out the rail so you know it's safe. It's for the kids.

After nearly half a century the news media still finds it necessary to demonize skateboarding. There's really no reason to throw "skateboard" in this headline at all, especially after reading the article. Would they have mentioned that he was getting on a bike? I think not!
