Can you see your wheels when you look down at your board?
« on: October 05, 2021, 12:51:26 PM »
Approaching my mid 30s my skate sessions have slowly but surely become almost completely ramp-centric.  I've decided to finallygraduate from the street setup I've been comfortable with for over 20 years now.  Anyway, I borrowed a friends board the other day (another ramp geezer) and I could see his wheels sticking out from under the board more so than I ever have (or ever have wanted to) on my setup.  It actually made skating the lip way more comfortable.  I'm bumping up to a 9 from an 8.5 and I wonder if my Indy 169's will give me this effect.  Just throwing this one out there.

I'm not a ramp geezer but I recently set up 8.5 trucks with additional speedrings on the inside on an 8.25 deck to help me learn fs crook variations on ledges and it worked perfectly. I could see my wheels on this one and I'd definitely use a setup like that on transition as well.

Depends on the wheels man…

Center set wheels with 169s on a 9 inch (popsicle) will not stick out

Offset conical wheels will

Center set wide wheels on a shaped 9 inch should stick out

The 9" deck with Indy 169s will work really well.

The bigger / wider normal wheels between 58 to 60 mm should sit about flush with the side of the board anyway, but putting two or even three washers on the inside will make the wheels sit out even more, along with giving you a bit more truck width to grind and a touch more stability too.

Wheels include Spitfire 60 x 39mm (wide), OJ Elite 61mm x 40mm, or something super wide like Slimeballs that are going to sit out a mile on either side.
I talk too much about skateboards.  Sorry.

No. I’ve learned over time I like a magic carpet, might have been from running venture 5.0s on anything from 7.5 to 8.5 as a kid.

I've always "sized down" on Indy's (149's on a 8.25, 159's on a 8.5 etc) think it's pretty common from checking the setup thread too.

I'm gonna say 169's on a 9" will be perfect - would be only a 1/8" smaller than than the hanger (the ones above are 1/4" smaller)

I haven't factored in tapered shapes or bigger/fuller wheel shapes though.

Yeah, just a little though. 8.75 trucks on an 8.5 board. It’s my favorite. Feels really stable and solid to me. Probably all in my head, but it works.

On street i like magic carpet for sure…on ramp i like wheels to sit flush with deck…must be for stability and lack of ramp skills.

Wish I would (it looks cool imo) but can’t stand the feeling of it, so 8.25” board and 148 thunders are my go-to.

kind of on this topic - swapped some 5.2's for 5.6's on an 8" for the first time ever after believing i would see some axle bolts, but it was all in my head apparently. nothing life changing after a session but i definitely feel the stability difference

You need a pretty big difference in truck size to start seeing something sticking out. If you flip your board over your trucks are going to appear to be sticking out way past the deck. The object that is closer is going to appear larger to your senses even if it actually isn’t the larger of the two. Tipping your board over to primo will give you a better idea of where your axles are sitting in relation to your board

for sure, in this case wheels are about flush and nuts are juuuuuuust past if i flip over which totally makes sense. primo it does favor falling grip side but still able to stand just fine.  it was a fun little run for me who has always preferred a smaller than board truck width, so thanks to this thread for making me give it a try

Not my wheels only the nuts

I can also see my nuts when looking down, especially if it's hot out.
