Magazine Archives
« on: March 12, 2024, 08:08:20 PM »
I searched and didn't see a dedicated thread for magazine archives, so forgive me if one exists.

I was inspired by many of the nostalgia accounts on instagram to start one for Canadian skateboarding so I've been on a kick the past few months trying to get my hands on any digital copies of old magazines I can. My video collection is solid, in part because of the efforts of the 'download the old vids' thread here, so I thought I might see what you guys have for magazines.

I'll share some resources I've found so far:

https://skatemagarchive.blogspot.com/p/list-of-magazine-issues.html
In another thread that I now can't find Kornholio8 started this archive. It is an amazing effort and I'm truly grateful. It hasn't been updated in years and there are a lot of broken links now, but it's still top notch!

https://www.thrashermagazine.com/covers/
Obviously Thrasher has archives on their page. Nothing into the 2000's yet though, here's hoping they continue this effort.

https://www.magzter.com/US/High-Speed-Productions,-Inc/THRASHER/Sports/
Magzster has a good collection of the past few years of Thrasher, as well as the last couple years of Transworld. There's a 7 day free trial that I used to screenshot what I really liked, but I didn't figure out how to save them as PDF's. Anyone else able to do that?

https://skatemedianerd.blogspot.com/
Skatemedianerd has tons of great Skateboarder and The Skateboard Mag articles. No full magazines but still a seriously awesome record.

https://www.skateboarding.com/tag/skateboarder-magazine-archives
Transworld has some of the real vintage Skateboarder mags, cool history lesson but a little older than what I can relate to.

https://issuu.com/colormagcanada
https://issuu.com/concreteskateboarding.com
Issuu has a decent collection of these two Canadian magazines. If you google 'Issuu to PDF' it's pretty easy to download from that site too.

https://issuu.com/jenkemmagazine
Jenkem also has a couple Transworld and Big Brothers posted on Issuu.

https://sbcskateboard.com/digital-archive/
Skateboard Canada has an archive from the last few years that they're still adding new issues to. Nothing older though unfortunately and I haven't figured out how to save those as PDF either.

I'm hoping there's a few archives out there that aren't easily Googled that I've missed. It amazes all the magazines don't post them up themselves and make a little cash on ad revenue.

Cool, thanks for all the links. SBC was the first skate mag I ever bought and was my favorite as a kid. It'd be nice to see some of those first issues I had again, hopefully they get some early 2000s ones up.

Thanks for the shoutout! I have full issues of Skateboarder scanned, just haven't posted them yet as I am still figuring out the best way to do it. I'd also include CBI in here.

4PLY recently created a database of all Thrasher covers (to March 2024).
Unlike Thrashers' archive (which is awesome, especially that many of the early years have the entire issue scanned), 4PLY's database is quickly searchable by year, skater, trick, spot and other terms.

Vintage Skateboard Magazines is a good resource with lots of mainstream coverage of skating too.

Andrew Luecke pointed out on Twitter that the Internet Archive has a bunch of skate catalogs available.

I've started this digital archive: https://skateboardmags.com/

Only 2 magazines so far (I've got ~200?), but want to keep adding more. They take some time because I want every single caption to be readable, not just the cover, etc.

I link to the digital downloads themselves, so I accept if someone somewhere down the line takes it and starts their own site, sells 'em, whatever. As long as it's preserved for the public (Slap heads).

I will add the resources mentioned in this thread to my site as well so they get found.

I've got hundreds of mags that I haven't had the time to upload and I'm running into the issue that free cloud storage providers have come to the "time to make some profit" phase of their business and they offer almost no free space.

* Most of the mags are from Issuu, since I automated a script to download the whole catalogue of these mags at once.

Some mags take a but more effort to turn into PDFs, but I always love a challenge. However, I'm really short on time and I don't see that improving much in the future. Fingers crossed.

Skate Zines blog has scans of 80's/early 90's zines. There's stuff like Swank Zine, Skate Fate, RSII's Beef Street etc. Really good stuff!

I've tried searching for mags on internet archive, didn't have much luck. Do you have any links?

Thanks so much for all that you've done so far! Your archive is by far the best resource I've found.

Would archive.org be an option if you're limited for space at blogspot? I've got hundred of gb's of skate videos posted there and haven't heard a peep from them.

Anyone have or know where to see the entire Big Brother issue with Steve Olson on the cover kf-ing over burning bibles? It was a low number issue, below #10 possibly but it was labeled as #666 I think.

I will look into it. I like MEGA, since they've got a history of now giving a fuck about copyrights.
