SOTY material

What criteria should someone meet in order to be considered for SOTY? Judging by who some people are considering contenders this year, I feel like there is a huge discrepancy in what people consider makes someone SOTY worthy. So I want to know what you guys think qualifies someone for SOTY, just a couple quick points. For me, they are as followed

1. Quantity of footage
2. Quality of footage
3. Overall relevance in the scene/industry

I know the second two are pretty subjective, but that's why we vote on things. Quality would be compared to their prior footage and to other skaters of similar disciplines (wouldn't compare GT and Suicu). Relevance would be mostly focused on the perception of the public, contest performance (if you care about that), and any of their other contributions to skateboarding that year. What really made me think of this was seeing Chima pop up in SOTY discussions after one part, that directly conflicted with 1 and 3 to me. No hate, the dude is ripping, it just didn't make sense.


Bonus question: Should we have separate SOTY's for street/transition? yes/no

It should go to the skater who gets people most excited to skate over the past year.

If you release nothing all year but then release a banger part that eclipses what someone else has done all year, then you deserve to win.

Some years it goes to the guy with the banger part and other it goes to the highest output. Usually it is fair in that sense.

It also helps if you:

- have a Thrasher cover
- win a "core" contest (Tampa Pro, CPN Pro, Dime Glory Challenge, etc.)
- turn pro or get a pro shoe
- good insta footy
- did NBD's or pushed the envelope of skating somehow
- dont wear Cariumas

My vote goes to consistent solid output throughout the year over one heavy november part. The person who wins should be on peoples minds all year long. But having that year end banger to seal the deal is important too. If dilo puts out another hammer he is my guy this time

No to the street/transition split.

To be fair to Chima, he’s been putting out insta footy on the regular all year. To old heads that may not seem important, but it is a big part of skateboard media and should be acknowledged in making the decision.

Quantity, quality of footage is a big factor, but impact of footage and skater should also be acknowledged.

My issue with this, is that this more relies on peoples lack of attention span these days. And plays on the breakneck pace of media output these days, rather than supporting the "of the year" context that is laid out in the name.
