excellent thread all--and i love the photos...so much integrity and who would have thought there were so many rugged, hard-working hunks lurking in the forums.

i love teaching, so i'm not going to say i miss the industrial/warehouse/manufacturing jobs i've fleetingly had over the years, but especially in a fall semester, when i'm teaching multiple classes, at different universities--and sitting on my ass in my office/bunker way too much--i do miss working with my hands and body.

i also really miss just good everyday working people...fuck, are academics--especially in the Humanities--a drag and self-absorbed, unhappy, attention-starved, and they have no sense of humor....

...like when you ask an oldtimer working a manufacturing job, if today is Tuesday, and he answers:

"all day"

i miss that kind of genuine, down-to-earth talk that goes down when people take pride in themselves, their work, and their coworkers.

like @Freelancevagrant said, "Keep up the great work and be safe y’all!"

Factory mechanic here, I work for one of Canada’s biggest furniture manufacturers. Love this thread.

Since last Friday, I’ve been working a big maintenance and saftey overhaul project on a giant 20-year old Holzma panel saw affectionately known as “The Big Bastard”.

Bascially had to change every single air hose (close to 100 of ‘em), change every sensor inside and out (both lasers and ultrasonic), had to change some wiring, did some maintenance on the 5 hydraulic lifts, added 3 extra emergency killswitches and the worst of all: we changed the computer and have to re-program everything in AutoCAD.

I’ve started reprogramming all the plans in AutoCAD one by one with an engineer today, the worst part is the testing. Some are easy and can be nailed on the first try. Certain things have a tolerance of max +/- .5 mm, so you have to be quite on the ball or it can take a long-ass time to get it right. If you fuck up, chances are your sensors aren’t right so you have to re-tweak them ever so slightly. Most likely will still be working on AutoCAD tomorrow and Thursday as well.

It’s a lot of work, but I love what I do honestly.

Your friends are right, the major pain in the ass is the testing, especially when the Big Bastard can do three different operations at once, so three different kinds of cuts, three different quantities with three independant exits. There’s also a question of the trimming as well, you trim off 1mm too much then all your pieces will be too small and won’t be accepted, and each plan has a different trimming proccess. Lots of trial and error honestly. MAJOR pain in the ass, at least the engineer is cool as shit and looks like Otto from the Simpsons.

Sick pool Matty, is that the Broadbeach Casino ? I used to drive in front of it all the time when I went to skate Pizzy.

I reckon trucks are sick
Logging looks heaps interesting

I am working on this casino in Broadbeach, I went up top for photos just now

That view takes me back, I used to live around there (Swingin' Safari) working a door-knocking job. Desperate but fun times, even spent some nights (though not a dime) at that very casino. Had my first surf a stone's throw from there too, when a surprise storm arose and I nearly didn't make it out of the water. I thought I was a goner and my mad Kiwi friend nearly died laughing at my panic.

On topic, I'm one of those glued to screens for money as well, envious of those working outside with their hands. Romanticizing their toil, no doubt. Considering a logging side-gig at the moment, as it happens. Plenty of demand for it, what with gas prices surging. Pays well too. Would you loggers out there recommend or no? Nice thread.

I'm not forklift certified, but I am a Certified Legal Video Specialist (CLVS).  Which basically means I've been trained to videotape depositions for civil litigation, and some criminal stuff but not much.  I work mainly in office for a court reporting company (Stenographers) assigning other videographers and doing post production work on depositions they've covered, but occasionally I'll get out and shoot one myself.  Meet some interesting characters, and some not very interesting, and my boss lets me buy nice video gear occasionally (he said it's not to get clips though for some reason).

the boss left a bunch of new barspoons and there's new liquor to try out.

i made some apple-cinnamon sirup to mix em up in rye old fashioneds, it's gonna be sick.

i'm not gonna be working like the 20s though, i think i fucked my back up during work and got to see the doc after the weekend. actually worrying about it being a disc issue. i have to let my coworkers handle the heavy lifting for now.

probably going to get in 20 hours of work between my two shifts from friday to saturday. i really hope i am not too dead by sunday haha. i have this vague hope that i might get promoted to manage the bar instead of standing behind it all the time. well i told my boss i need to take a step back due to health and school and he understood but also said he doesn't know what to do if i'd quit. i wrote the drinks menu, invented two house drinks, chose the liquor, basically determined the opening concept in so far there is any. we are super understaffed. i unsuccessfully tried to get one of my friends in, which sucks. the boss and him have a troubled backstory and it's not happening.

I'm so soft I work in software now but I was a projectionist for a decade or so. I moved on when houses started going all digital and the competition for jobs started getting nasty. I figured if you can't beat em join em and got a start up QA gig at a cell phone game company.

Cinemeccanica projectors are the reason I will hate allen bolts til the day I die.

Nah I get that for sure and that's how it is for everyone but the way my nervous system reacts just makes it unbearable and I can't drag myself into a work situation even though money obvsiously helps. I've been in work bathrooms cutting myself and I force my way through a lot too but it reaches a point where it's just unsafe.

Lol seeing a post like that would've got me through a shift but I took the day off and got fired without warning or a talk or anything.
