Hi,

Unlike camera setups, we rarely talk about making the video. It might be cool to know What are your inspirations? how do you structure the videos? do you use story telling?
what kind of b sides do you film? ect..

So what makes a good skate video for you ?

I make my videos reflect on my feelings at the time of filming (sometimes at least) if I've been quite down, I might use a slower or a tad dark song. I also let the music make certain decisions in the video, like trick placement or where b-roll should go. Sometimes I will plan a head a little if I already know a song I want to use, then I can get shots that compliment the track nicely.

There are right ways and wrong ways, and sometimes the right way is the wrong way to go about it. But that's my opinion.

I might be "stuck in the old ways" but one of the gold standards to me is the classic Girl/Chocolate vids. Goldfish, Paco, Mouse. At least in terms of structure. Nobody has pulled off skits as well as they have.

More recently, videos that still have "parts" but it's looser, with b-roll type Segways that tie the parts together, kinda like an endless music mix with no real fade-to-blacks. Always enjoy when a song kicks in and I'm not expecting it. Original GX1000 video is a prime example.

As fas as "what makes a GOOD skate video" Capturing the fun, spontaneous, social aspects that occur naturally is more important than the level skateboarding. Easier said than done, obviously. Unless you're really there rolling all the time, it's hard to document.

The things that stick out to me that make a "good" skate video is the song, the filming, the editing and the b-roll footage. Super 16mm always looks fucking amazing.
