For the last set of titles I did:

-Did the type in InDesign and saved it as a PDF
-Printed them out by forcing some higher-stock paper through my shitty desktop printer (caused some cool glitchy shit)
-Taped those to a white background
-Filmed them with my camera set to 480i
-Made them a negative image in post, and then experimented with color correction and keyframes.

Titles around 7:48 to the end.  I'm sure there are a lot of ways you could do it cleaner, you can definitely see the tape outlines and shit but I kinda like it that way.

For my last vid, I borrowed VERY heavily from one of my favorite movies title sequences.
Starts at 1:50:

next project will use practical effects, but I don't have it fully fleshed out yet.

@mostlyslappies, those are great! I've always been a fan of simple titles with subtle effects/animation, especially if it's practical effects, and I really love Bag of Suck and their approach to titles. One of the best ever in my opinion.

If you wanna do cool titles but can't be fucked paying for Adobe, I would recommend Blender. It's a free and super powerful 3D effects software blah blah blah but the main thing is, it's free. Hell it's been used in a lot of Hollywood movies too.
