I've always been into his skating, and you have to respect someone who stays that active years later.  Plenty of dudes pile out or milk it after having half as much success as he did.

I was never really into his skating, but yeah it is hard not to respect the stuff he has done!

Also - I just went on to his insta and then he posted this clip, which blew me away for how hard he went when he was still just a kid  :o

Notable David moments:

- saying that his favourite sport is “masturbation while watching porno” in an interview when he was a kid

- holding up a dead bird and spitting on it

- the 600K incident

- that big 5050

- kickflip into the ditch

So in conclusion, if this was a perfect world then David would ride for B bandanas.

Been following him on Insta too and I love the fact he still goes real hard on big spots, while being very far away from the industry, in Colombia. shit if you guys think the spots are crusty in Jersey, go to Colombia. Lots of big hills and rough-ass pavement.

People thought it said GOOK (including me) so it was really nothing but the post is lame regardless

I'm also hyped he's skating hard right now, hopefully has one more good part in him. It's a shame he kept getting gnarly injuries for a long time after the soty part

Honestly I played a lot of corny guitar when I was injured too. David’s cool again now

Also, my first pro board was a David Flip. White people in public would stop me and ask if it was my pro board. I couldn’t even kickflip

Was a SOTY ever so quickly forgotten about? He rules, and I appreciate that he just fucked off back to Colombia rather than sticking around California to fight for crumbs with a zillion other pros. I expect that those Rockstar checks go pretty goddamn far in Medellin, and the dude is always hitting the most beautiful and gnarly spots, so it sounds like he’s got it figured out.

That was shocking to watch the first time.  Basically someone doing snowboard-size tricks on a skateboard.

I just wanna see an edit from him. His IG clips are always gnar but putting something together would be cool. Idk what's going on with him sponsorship wise because he's still active and ripping but nothing with flip or volcom and idk what his shoe situation is.

Maybe he's one of the few pros who was smart about his royalty checks and contest money, and got himself setup for life back home. Still getting royalties from Rockstar and Flip to keep the lights on and pay for a nice dinner once in a while, effectively retiring while still healthy and not chewed out by the industry.

Doubt Flip would ever kick him off unless they went under.

I sincerely hope FLiP can restore itself to some semblance of its former greatness. The ad direction in the new issue of Thrasher isn’t really doing it for me personally, but we have a Large Mountain (B-How TS ref, lol) on the way to my lil shop. FLiP should be up there in the ranks with Toy and Zero, for crying out loud.

David needs a gnarly skate ad or a cover, with a big ass logo tee on to grow some new community following or something maybe. They should also get Roos the gal who 50 grinded Hollywood 16, that’s the move right there if anyone from FLiP is reading this, imho.
[close]
I think flip is still pretty much level with toy and zero. They just kinda lack a clear image both as a team and graphics wise. You know a toy machine board from a mile away. Roos sure but also Aori and Pamela Rosa. Flip should of taken them at least 3 years ago. If Roos is on enjoi flow it would prob make sense to swap over to blind. That might actually lead somewhere the team is from all over and many do comps etc

Agree. So crazy if you think about it though, imagine telling that to someone 10-15 years ago. That 3 of the top board companies were all just kinda mediocre now, almost b tier.

I'd have Zero above Toy, by a distance too, but both miles ahead of Flip as 'legacy brands'.  Zero at least taps (heavily) into it's heritage, and has had an abundance of ex-riders leave for modern companies, showing that Jamie has always been decent at 'recruiting', and always had his ear to the ground. Toy Machine almost did next to nothing from 2010-2019, and as a result just fell wayward, gone from being a weirdo-outsider brand to a bubblegum brand with Sinclairs DNA all over it. Flip? They have the lights on, but nobodies home.

He does the most insane shit but I can never get behind his style. Regardless, Flip kind of fucked up by not making another full length after ES with the amount of talent they still have. It’s like after Rowley left the whole company just became a shell of itself.

I'm sceptical about how accurate this is. To really survive you have to invest your money in stuff. I don't think he retired just by not wasting money and having a couple vending machines. I think David had a pretty nice house. I suppose he could of sold that and survive for a bit.

My guess would be flipping houses - subprime mortgage crash of 2008/2009, snap up some good deals and ride it out till the property market heats up again like it's doing now.

I respect David. He skates hard, had a very rough life (he once told a story his family was going to get evicted, so he entered a contest, won and used to money to help them) and seems a nice humble guy.

Not a fan of the rockstar thing either, but fuck it - it's much more honest than some skaters who think they're smart and cult but end up being as shallow as kid's pool.
