Watching a man who is half a century old repeatedly crash on 900 attempts stands alone in what people are doing.

Tom Brady might be the only other athlete who could be mentioned in the same breath as Hawk (I'm a Jets fan saying that).

Human athletic ability chart looks like this:

Tony Hawk > Everyone who has ever played in the NBA since the beginning of time

Finished it. I thought Rodney comes off fine. Feel bad for Lance - doesn’t seem like he could ever accept how much people love and admire him because he still thinks he has to prove himself. Stacey makes a great point about McGill having the healthiest relationship to skateboarding out of that group.

Cab comes off like a tool saying basically that if you don’t take crazy risks you’ll end up a nobody. Fuck you Cab not everyone has your skills, some of us accept that we’re just ok skaters who have to work regular jobs. I’m glad they included Duane only because of the story he tells about Tony talking to him about Duane losing his son.

maybe if it ends up on Netflix, but only to hear Blender's and Lance's stories/perspectives...never gave a fuck about Hawk in the 80s and he's only consistently gotten cornier since--perhaps a generational thing, but i never thought skateboarding needed an "ambassador" to mainstream consumer culture and i've never liked tricks that involve spinning really...i love that i read above that Blender says he never even tried a 540...of course he didn't.

in re Duane's insensitivity towards Frank Hawk's death and the suggestions that the documentary needed Grosso, i would say Grosso hated Frank Hawk (i.e. the NSA) as much as--if not more than--anyone back then

difference is, Grosso grew up and realized how meaningless these things really are in the long run, Duane unfortunately still has not and assumedly never will at this point...
[close]

not that i'm stanning for duane peters but posts like this are why people should stop critiquing things that they obviously (even admittedly) didn't watch
[close]

huh?
[close]

Duane had some semi redeemable quotes where he semi alluded to regretting being such a dickhead. They were in the documentary we’re talking about that you didn’t watch, that’s what he’s saying to you.

also spinning is one of the sickest parts of skating

i don't doubt that Duane had "semi redeemable" moments where he "semi alluded" to feelings such as regret...he doesn't seem to be an especially opaque human at this point

and they're--without a doubt--incredible athletic feats, but 720s and 900s are all gross to watch and i couldn't give a fuck--give me McGill's "McEgg" (i think that's what this craze is called) over all of that spinning any day

I think if this Hawk Doc had preceded all the other skate docs of the last couple of decades it would be pretty remarkable but these things get pretty formulaic and that take away from a  pretty compelling story here. I also think they missed a great opportunity when they were so vague with why Tony "checked myself in somewhere." Where? For what? I do think Duane did redeem himself a bit and Tony's response to Duane over the years has been pretty noble. The slams were brutal though. I know he's obviously slammed a tonne over the years but I never realized how much abuse he was willing to take. The focus and determination visible on his face during the 900 session was pretty special. Something about Hawk feels disingenuous though, as if he's spent so much time in the limelight he's never revealed who he really is and although the doc is supposed to reconcile that... I don't know... I still feel he's continuing to construct an artificial persona.

Watched this last night and I thought it was great, especially when comparing to many other skateboard/skateboarder documentaries.

I think there are many things it did right, like focusing on the skateboarding, e.g. in the second half there could've been spent on focusing on his superstardom where Hollywood whatshisnames praise his talent and influence, but instead the doc focused on Tony's personal shortcomings, his drive for skateboarding and his peers. Maybe the last half could've have had more on how his emotional issues affected his life and relationships, but then again the whole documentary was about that, so I don't think it was necessary.

All the talking heads were great, especially Lance and Neil. The soundtrack was fitting and all the archival footage was awesome (of course if you know skate history, you'll have seen most of it before).

The documentary shows how brutal beatings Tony has endured and tries to shine light why he (and many of his peers) continue to do what he does, despite the fact it really is "stupid" and unfathomable to any non-skateboarder. But I think any skateboarder can relate to it and know how it's unique compared to pretty much any other sport/hobby.

In Tony's case, it's really interesting as he has already achieved everything: fame, money and respect of peers. But he's still out there trying to push his and skateboarding's limits when he could've just stood back and reap the fruits of his labor and live comfortably.

Great watch, 4/5 stars.

Heavy that his mom thought about aborting him.  Imagine a world with no birdman.

I'm not surprised that they skimmed over the early birdhouse era, but we should have heard from Welinder and Klein.  In fact, you could say that without Jeremy Klein encouraging Tony to stick to vert we wouldn't have the Hawk we have.

The Duane stuff is what it is, cuz he still is what he was, but also it was what it was.

The Gorilla suit slam is torture porn.

The Chin Ramp 2.0 slam is super disturbing.  He did not look okay after that.  Peralta is basically saying he should stop skateboarding.  He must own a set of golf clubs.

Someone that old being that good and taking those risks is beyond human.  Birdman indeed, ruler.

I enjoyed it. Watched it in one go, which is rare for me, usually view films in chunks, but it flows well.

All the best documentaries that cross over aren't really about the subject, and I guess this is about obsessive behaviour.

And Duane "flippy do-dah-day bullshit" Peters comes across as more nuanced than his recent social media diatribes would suggest.

I watched this and enjoyed it. Probably the most real representation of Tony since his section in Destroying America. Wish they would have gotten a lil deeper into his rehab shit, but I could see why they left it out. Riley lookin like Kurt. Duane being Duane, slightly remorseful--but forever an old man yelling at a cloud.

Stacy Peralta fucking sucks.

Gonz>Mullen, but Mullen deserves respect, freestyler or not.

Anyways it's breakfast time, gonna cook some Mceggs

Damn I left my bubbler at my parents house

My wife’s trajectory as someone who has never seen or heard of Rodney Mullen before:
First time he shows up on screen: “oh man, I love this guy, he seems nice and cool”
After two hours: “oh my god, shut the fuck up, i fucking hate this guy!”

I remember going to see the Bones Brigade doc with a girlfriend and after it was over she was like “that Rodney Mullen is obviously autistic”, and then a lightbulb went on in my head.

My guess is that all the Duane stuff was recorded before he started believing that Hawk is a transgender imposter sent by the deep state or whatever he thinks now.
