This morning I was going to write in the unpopular opinion thread that I didn't like steak but figured that no one would understand what I was talking about.

I've tried multiple times to kill animals for their meat and I can't do it. I come from a midwest hunting fishing background. We were very poor when I was growing up and I loved thanksgiving because in my family it was the only time that I got to eat vegetables. When I was 16 over 30 years ago I asked my mom if it was okay that I didn't eat meat. She could care less at the time and I have happily never eaten meat since. I'm not one to judge do you but if it takes a shit I won't eat it

This. I don't know if they still have it but Trader Joe's used to sell flank steaks stuffed with spinach and feta cheese. They were ridiculously expensive and they had to be grilled, however that shit was kill bill. No lie

in all seriousness, veganism is definitely not classist. vegan food (rice, noodles, beans, tofu, veggies, bread etc) is much cheaper than meat/dairy. i'm a college student who makes about 10-12k a year and i'm still vegan. i also see the "no ethical consumption under capitalism" argument quite a bit; ethically consuming things like plastic, gas etc is definitely tricky. however, you can (much more) ethically consume food simply by buying different (and cheaper) things at the grocery store. veganism is quite literally the easiest thing you can do overnight to improve the state of this planet; you minimize not only your negative environmental impact but you minimize animal abuse as well. if a huge part of leftism is about social equality, then why are we okay with the mass abuse of animals?

leftism is mainly about basic economic equality amongst humans and sort of eliminating the boss-worker relationship and the money system in favor of worker owned means of production, a to various degrees planned economy to ensure basic needs are met, the elimination of our current financial system for something else and also somewhat inherently, internationalist and anti-racist. you can add social progress like veganism/anti-animal abuse to it, you can add feminism and trans-rights to it, you can add environmentalism to it if you want, and then you get intersectionalism, and that is imo also a good way to look at it, but no one is all that at the same time. you will never be a totally perfect intersectionalist, that would be sort of an ideal sjw human, the super woke hyper-ally. someone like that literally doesn't exist irl.

thus it makes no sense to draw the line for others if they are leftist or not, just because they don't put the same emphasis on veganism as you. it's more a post-left thing, as in, if we'd alreadylive in an actual leftist society, which could be something like socialism, or communism, or some form of leftist syndicalism or whatever... then that would be something that would probably adressed wholesale. but on the other hand how would that be done without authoritarian mandates?

the reason i'm opposed to the idea of total veganism is that it's authoritarian in concept. veganism objectively is the best form of consumption imo, but what food you put in your body is a very subjective, personal thing. and before someone says "yo frank, you love vaccines so much, for sure you are for mandates, right?" no mfer stfu, i am pro-vax, but anti-mandate. for the same reason.

but that's not to say that veganism and animal rights can't be an important part for you and other leftists. the only way you could inherently connect it to leftism tho would be via economics. so the question would be in what way veganism empowers workers worldwide to liberate themselves. but many workers in the world, unfortunately, have to work in the meat industry. so as long as they still have to hustle for their bosses and can not decide themselves to dismantle the meatplant and start a greenhouse instead, it would not be a show of solidarity with those workers, but rather a fuck you. and those workers could be lost to fascists causes worst case. and even if these workers were all vegans themselves already, they might still have to partake in meatpacking or butchering out of economic necessity to earn a living wage.

Facts. I'm sympathetic to veganism, but I'm certainly not an absolutist about it. I'd honestly prefer only eating stuff that i killed myself on a hunt, ya know that way there's a sporting chance and also that way you can fully accept the consequences of your meat consumption by taking a life and having to sit with that. But then again, nature itself is far from egalitarian, so although equality is a maxim to strive for as self aware creatures, we cannot pretend that we live in a fair and just world. We can only do our part and work together to try and make things better
