Screamo
« on: February 11, 2022, 06:29:17 AM »
Being the resident screamo historian I figured I’d make a thread about my favorite genre of music. That way we can give some props to the underrated elite, not clog up the hardcore thread too much, and give praise to the classics of the genre.

I never gave screamo as a whole a legitimate listen. Imma listen to these and expand my eclectic musical tastes. Thank you for your cervix o7

I legit think you’d like the recorded version of by the fireplace in white. It’s about aliens, which makes it even cooler.

https://youtu.be/LpusjX2tSRY

i couldn't get enough of this demo tape when it dropped...
https://youtu.be/YxbSneIS1tQ

the homies old band that i still think is underrated as hell
https://youtu.be/97trrljNoDE

a little 'twinkly' for my tastes but these peeps are hands down some of the nicest people i have ever had the chance to become friends with from diy so a needed shout out. also the guitarist and bassist are both skaters
https://youtu.be/SCefH1RhJOQ

i really liked this band too and felt like they didn't get their due credit. they were sick
https://youtu.be/npTLzgz4pg8

also maybe a hot skramz take but i never got into loma prieta and think they were super overrated(there were much better bands that were active at the same time that got overlooked)

That's sick!

My very first friend I made at university (we bonded over talking about seeing A.C., haha) dragged me to see Jerome's Dream. I'd never heard of them at the time. He only told me about their matching denim outfits and their bowlcuts, not really anything about the music. It was fucking insane and I loved it. I saw them 2 more times with that same friend. One night, we were in his room fucking around on AIM and I actually talked to the singer (his username was emoamigo) and it was around the time that the full length came out and we asked why the vocals changed so much and he said that his voice was absolutely destroyed from the way he used to sing. My girlfriend at the time got me the 2 song tape from them and it was the only tape I played in my car for probably a year.

Without doxxing myself too much I went to school in Providence around the turn of the century. I think the first time I saw Jeromes Dream was at Fort Thunder (Lightning Bolt's home/artspace) and then after they were kicked out there was another building they found where they lived on the first floor and there were 3 different show spaces occupied by artists and bands on the 3 floors above. It was definitely a perfect moment sort of thing.

Between the Fort and Olneyville, plus the Anton Bordman House, little spaces that would open and close almost immediately, bigger venues like the Met and Lupos, we were able to see music at least once a week.

And just to add to my stroll down memory lane (and to keep the thread on track)...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqGTySMC5z0

I saw The Red Scare open for Orchid (again, I think... everything from that time blurs together, luckily I didn't drink or do any drugs during that time of my life or I would've forgotten all of it) and I was so into them. The bass player was this very small woman who would down a full can of beer between every song. And their songs were like 2-3 minutes and the set was probably 20 minutes total, but I think she probably drank 10 beers over the duration of the show. I'd never seen anyone drink with such determination in my life.

i have seen every relevant modern screamo band at this point. it has never been my thing, but i toured with my friends’ band for some years and screamo has always claimed them through their ascent. the only band i’ve ever truly fucked with is lord snow. i really like the people of ostraca, but i toured europe with lord show for a month and i saw every single set they played. they’re a fucking spectacular band, totally beyond genre. the guitar and drum work specifically is unparalleled.

Ever heard of a band from Australia called eucalypt? I saw them play a squat in Sydney once and it was one of the most intense shows I’ve ever seen!

Don’t know much about the genre really, been listening to a bit of envy from Japan lately though…

Damn y’all I’m doing my best to catch up and respond because there has been some serious fucking heat and some really rad stories being tossed around here.

Huge shouts to @Macho Taildrop for being the goat and allowing me to pick his brain nonstop about this. Also loving seeing Antioch arrow get posted. Gravity records just didn’t fucking miss man.

@beatifk dude your stories just make me green with jealous rage. Gonna be pm’ing you to see if you’ve got any old flyers I could buy off you or something. By the sounds of it you caught both the pick your poison and chased by bees tours. Being in New England and the tristate area during that time must have been absolutely incredible.

@urbneathme Dude, I used to I love lord snow, and the dudes in ostraca are the fucking raddest. But they will always be Kilgore trout to me, ngl. What band were you in, if you don’t mind me asking?

@somethingmustbreaknow nothing but absolute love for the bummed out Europeans man, sed non satiata, suis la luine, Amanda Woodward, anomie, god damn just too many to fucking list dude.

To keep it on topic, here’s a video of arguably my favorite cover of all time.

Thank you all for giving me a place to truly nerd the fuck out about this.

No need to PM... I have very little left from this period. I have a few records in storage in my father's basement (Seeing Means More Than Safety among them) but other than that, nada. I was never a flyer collector, and even if I was, there was a lot of competition because, at the time, Fort Thunder flyers were these 10-color screenprinted masterpieces that would be taken immediately by the printmaking and illustration department students. The Fort people started getting mad because the flyers were taken down so quickly toward the end that nobody knew about the shows!

All I have left is a bunch of hazy stories.

Being out in New England/Tristate was surely great at the time. I feel like I saw a lot of "important" history and it really made me appreciate music and musicians in a new way. But I always dreamed to be part of the half-moon bay, 924 Gilman, Che Cafe, etc era... I guess the grass is always greener, as they say. Luckily, I was able to catch Portraits of Past during their late 2000s reunion at Death By Audio in Brooklyn and it was easily one of the best shows I've ever seen in my life.

@somethingmustbreaknow FUCK I forgot how good 1905 is. Big fax though 1000 travels is one of my all time favorites and I think end to end that record is fucking flawless.

Here’s some other really good euro/uk screamo I’ve been a fan of for a while now.

Shout out Kaddish for being named after a Jewish prayer for mourning.

https://youtu.be/iiC89vMy578
https://youtu.be/BBwg2OKGaI8
https://youtu.be/m1Dz8wPJl5o

One last non European but an absolutely incredible split.
https://youtu.be/c0B6utdKigc

@beatifk damn, I know exactly how ya feel man, I wasn’t one either and I regret it. I used to have an absolutely brolic record collection, including first presses of seeing means more than safety and the split with orchid, among many many others, but moving a few times and having a family sort of made it so Over time I sold off the entirety of my collections sans a few I could never part with.

I was like the generation right after yours (I’m 30 now), I had tickets to the portraits of past reunion at Gilman in 08 and for some reason or another I wasn’t able to go up from LA and ended up putting my fist through my closet door and had to get 12 stitches. Thankfully, I was able to see a good bit of bands that made their mark in history, but I was blissfully unaware at the time, and just wishing I was a few years older and able to see some of the hallmark bands of the genre. But such is the plight of literally every hardcore kid ever.

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

These bands last for mere moments, we're lucky to have seen and heard any of them. But there will always be sad/angry/confused teenagers making music, so there will always be something new to discover. I saw Knocked Loose right before covid hit, and while it's not really a style of music I like, I figured that they were playing in my neighborhood at a venue that usually has good shows, so I dragged 2 friends, a 30-something french woman who's mostly into Deftones and Korn and some R'n'B as well and a 20 year old kid directly from China here to study chemistry. We all had a blast at the show, it's just a unifying moment to be in a room with a bunch of strangers yelling and jumping around and being free, and something that's timeless and genre-less. I try to enjoy it all.

And on the topic of bands I never saw... When I was a teenager I religiously listened to the local college FM radio station. From 10-midnight, they would play rap, then at midnight, it was the "hardcore" show. But it was this super softspoken guy who played a great mix of punk, hardcore, early emo/screamo, and some other weird things. If I had a blank cassette I would try to tape it and then ask my "cool" adult family friends who worked near a good record shop to ask for any of the bands I could remember from the show.

I remember I had one tape that I'd recorded from the broadcast that started with Husker Du "Something I Learned Today" then went into some early screamo-ish music that completely blew me away.

Swing Kids... into Fingerprint... into Constantine Sankathi
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KeV4YTDXuac
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sffEYMJFzo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6D3iqa_U1M

And I remember when he said "and that was a Constantine Sankathi... I guess that's hardcore, or whatever we're calling hardcore these days...", haha. It was something that was constantly changing, and will continue to do so, I think it's pretty great. And it's crazy to me that I still remember this radio show I taped probably 25 years ago, haha.

The screamo thread here is definitely many steps above my pay grade, but I always loved Blood Brothers. I only used to listen to mopey acoustic music, but saw them in a small venue in maybe 2002 and it melted my face off. One of the singers ripped his shirt off, and totally pulled it off. I told him they were amazing after the show, and he gave me a hug.

Also the drummer from a band I was in send me this yesterday and it fucking killed me.

And to keep it on topic, here’s Takaru. A criminally underrated band out of San Francisco featuring members of welcome the plague year and funeral diner. This record fucking bowls and comes highly recommended.
