and while were at it:

you americans are so fucking stupid that you think that there are only three ethnicities black white and east asian and you want to push everything in one of those categories and think you can judge about that.
yes im also talking about afro american people. you are fucking ignorant as fuck. white people all over the world have so much culture and different trates yet you call us white people all together with you ignorant asses.
for example are the people in russia and ukraine in no way more priviliged than your dumb asses in your country and yet you think we all are the oppressors of the world, just because youre dumb as shit and white people in america have no identity except your dumb country. you wouldnt last a week without your stupid playstation network and sugar filled snacks in some of the countries that you call WHITE COUNTRIES. check youre privilig on a larger scale than you racist american hometown
Nice way to insert your obvious racist ideology into this thread, what you said here is a shining example of stupidity and a distorted view that your opinion on ethnicity matters, it doesnt.
Are Americans ethnocentric?  Absolutely. We live somewhat isolated and are indoctrinated from a very young age that we are number 1 at everything and the world wants to be like us. You couple that with a general lack of education and the fact that the vast majority never travel outside of the continent and you have an effective recipe for said ethnocentrism and nationalism.

The United States will not go to war with Russia and especially not over Ukraine. The annexation of Crimea serves as a good example of what the west will do, not much and we shouldn’t. War is becoming increasingly difficult to sell since the advent of the internet, the “enemy” now has a 3 dimensional existence so the war machine of old is ineffective at vilifying them. That said I find it very important, enlightening and educational to get opinions and viewpoints from people who live in these countries where conflict appears to be on the horizon.

People are acting like whether a war happens or not (all signs now point to yes)will all be because of American imperialism. Putin has signaled this whole thing for quite some time and the Western political class and journalists just never bothered to understand it or take it seriously. Putin is taking advantage of a lack of preparedness by the US, EU, and NATO.

You're right this has been signaled for a long time, but any Russian "expansion" signaling started after NATO said that Ukraine and Belarus will become members, so it really is defensive on Russia's part. NATO was set up to protect from USSR, when the USSR collapsed they're mission is confused. Ukraine is not a vital interest of the west unless their aim is to topple Russian regime (whether that be in the name of spreading democracy or whatever). You can't just go taking steps to toppling the Russian regime and expect them not to fight back - that's where the west was unprepared. Russia will not try to take Kiev themselves, they're just trying to wreck Ukraine so the west can't have it.

For a long time ,I thought L Ron Hubbard's name was Elrond (like the Elf ruler from Lord of the Rings)
Very disappointed to learn that his first name is L.

Also a big fan of C. Thomas Howell

Exactly, why the fuck does nato even exist? Was it not brutal enough when we crushed the USSR and turned it into a casino for gangsters and oligarchs under that drunk fool yeltsin that we installed? When will we get over this cultural cold war hangover about Russia? I'm not defending the current Russian regime, but we got what we wished for, Russia isn't a Beacon for worldwide communism anymore, they learned the game that we're playing and a very cunning FSB officer took it to the bank. So now we have to hear some of the most blood thirsty neo cons and liberal war hawks bay for the blood of others because they don't believe plunging Russia back into pseudo serfdom was brutal and lurid enough.

Thank you, appreciate this comment a lot. Putin has little reason to extend past Donbas and Crimea, except if Ukraine joins a hostile military alliance. Donbas and Crimea are largely ethnically Russian, and if we put it to a vote, it's quite likely a majority in both regions would choose to join Russia. Putin would take diplomatic solutions seriously, if the US bothered to reciprocate. Alas, he's well aware of history and recognizes NATO's true function as an interventionary and hostile military alliance. He's well aware the West tore up the Minsk agreement. He knows Turkey allowed US nukes on their border the moment they allied with the West. Most importantly, what does Fred Gall think about this mess?

Wow - to read such an article in a skateboard Magazin makes me proud. Not because we talk about politics. Because we gave intelligent skateboarders the possibility to speak out about the struggle they go through - and we listen - this is what matters.

What happens right now at the Ukraine in front of our eyes is a pity.
It’s a pity for the Nato, it’s a pity for the EU and foremost for the people of the Ukraine and Russia who need to life with the consequences.

Some of you guys speak Russian? Some of you listen to Putins speach yesterday? Luckily a friend of mine was growing up and studying in Moskau together with her and our Colleges from Ukraine we watched together that shit show. history repeating.

Putin need to provocateur NATO /EU to show to his people he is the Strong leader Russia needs. Through development of an internal conflict inside the Ukraine he make it impossible for the Ukraine to become part of the NATO. It’s against the statute of the NATO.
And he is back on the international interests.
So everyone loose: the people of Russia, the people of the Ukraine, the politicians of the EU and NATO.
The only guy who wins is Putin - in his own world, with is own rules. Congratulations.

This is hilarious. Does Berra actually think Joe Biden and world leaders are looking at the Berrics Instagram? I mean I knew the guy was a self-important egomaniac but this is just absolutely ludicrous. Nobody is following your skate park to get their opinions on international geopolitical conflicts, Steve.

My wife is from Donetsk. Russian mum. Ukrainian dad.

I expect dinner conversations are going to get pretty interesting.

I'll save you the headache of having to listen to skaters with no geopolitical education talk about the most significant military event Europe in the last 40 years. Just listen to the Economist. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1aLdwI9s0wc

I would rather drill meself a new pair of eardrums than listen to a neoliberal rag talk about american imperialism, thanks

It's crazy how we all feel like we know what's going on, at least to some degree. I find it funny how we choose when to trust/distrust the media. I would wager that the general public (and even more informed folks) probably have no idea what the real reasons for these large scale conflicts are. History shows that the context in which these events begin is usually just BS, and the truth gets uncovered years later. I'm trying to see someone grind a tank gun though, I know that much. FS or BS smith with a solid pop out would be ideal. Just need to build the right ramp for the side of a tank.

Damn, Krugman fucking killed it in his op-ed on how to punish Russia for this:
https://www.nytimes.com/2022/02/24/opinion/russia-ukraine-sanctions-offshore-accounts.html

The short version of this go after all the oligarchs' laundered money in the West, but this would require the West examining its own addiction to easy money from Russian kleptocrats

instead of getting actual opinions from people who live there

or even seeking out journalistic accounts fro both sides

instead  you should trust a neoliberal western rag who is almost certain to echo the US/NATO line completely. hmmm
