8.38 Decks with 144 or 149?
« on: March 05, 2022, 02:43:37 PM »
So even as a member of the 7.75 GANG .. I'm feeling like there's a lot of bloards I want to try in this size realm (which I may hate but whatevs)... but what are you guys riding with these sizes? 144s or 149s? I dunno Venture or Thunder or Ace sizes so if you explain please translate what Indys these would be. Thank you in advance

Ok

I beg of you, please ignore:

So. I also regularly skate 7.75s, usually with 5.0s (129 in Indy), the hangers are .12 less than the deck. If you wanted to keep that ratio, an 8.38 on 8.25 trucks (144 indy) would be the ticket. As an added bonus, trucks are usually experienced by most folks as fitting a board, +/- .25”, meaning 8.25” trucks ‘fit’ boards 8-8.5”. Coming from smaller setups, the smaller truck size might be the move.
On the other hand, 8.38 boards are basically 8.5s. More than a few 8.38s actually measure 8.5.
My personal experience is I for whatever reason somewhat ‘hate on’ 8.25” trucks, not a rational feeling…it just feels so precious. And yes, I did start a thread about a super specific wb measurement so yeah. I am an idiot. I’ve had the 144s, I have some 148s, never stuck with either. (I did have a really lovely setup some 5 ish years ago on an 8.28 doomsayer with 144s and probably should have stuck with it, but whatever).
I just set up a huge for me, 8.5 (G053) with thunder 149s, 54 classics. The board has a 14.5” wb. Ludicrous.

Best feeling setup I’ve had in over a year.

149, which sit under 8.5" anyway. That's axel end to end, but you're actually using much less. 149 will have the wheels sit more flush. 149 on 8.25 too. Heck, Taylor Nawrocki rocks 149 on 8in.

144s because sometimes I size down to 8.25 and I like the way they feel better.

Sounds good. Definitely wider trucks would make me sick. Also usually using the 129s (139s on my 8.38 egg). Even pondering this kind of weirds me out. Think I've been not hyped on the lack of 7 75 options too. Thought a change might be good or bad for me

149s definitely. If you're looking to flip the board a bit more nimbly, then Ace 44s actually, but 149s feel so perfect and stable on that width

I run 144 on 8.38 and it's perfect. I hate it when the axle is flush with the edge. Plus it flips easier.

I spent well over a decade bouncing between 8.5,8.63, and 8.75. Last year I sized down to 8.38 with Ace 44’s. I keep getting older and flip tricks keep getting harder.
Anyway. I feel like 44’s line up perfect.

I'm on a DLX 8.38" so it's more like an 8.5" and the 149s are still poking out the edge a bit. If I was doing more flips and fewer grinds and manuals, I'd probably use my 144s, but with how I am skating lately the 149s have been perfect.

Have you considered letting your wheel shape determine whether you go + or – on the trucks?

I go for the wider trucks if my wheels have a slimmer shape (like a Classic) because the narrow contact patch brings the effective width of the truck in, and I go for the narrower trucks if I’m using square/wide wheels because they do the opposite.

Depends.. do you want Hot Rod action or do you want magic carpet? Flipping? Not flipping? Pool/transition? Street? Park? All terrain? Tech?

149 if it's Indy or another truck that's an equivalent size to Indy from another brand.

144 seems better for 8.0-8.25, while 149 seems better for 8.25-8.6.

144 and go with more washers on the inside to flush out the wheels a smidge.

I have ridden 149s starting on 8.25 just in case I wanted to move up in size. Currently on 8.38 and I have enjoyed both setups. Totally vouch for 149.

Similar to what I posted in the 8.5 truck thread, I back 8.25 trucks (144/148/5.6) on anything from 8-8.5. They're lighter, super versatile, and only a tad smaller than 8.5 trucks. You can always add extra washers or use wider wheels if needed too.

This! 8.25 trucks (144s/148/5.6, etc) + 3 speed rings on the inside, 1 on the outside and you should be golden. I ride this on my 8.25 and it feels perfect.

Just wondering, but how is that much different from 149? It ends up at 8.38 which is splitting hairs difference.

I think the idea is more flexibility, slightly less weight. And with the weight further out, the wider the axle, the more that weight effectively increases. For me it’s more of a leverage thing: easier to flip wider board, with narrower trucks.

All of that being said I, currently**, couldn’t be more stoked on my 8.5, with Thunder 149s

Red pill : 144 or whatever 8.25" trucks + some washers if you want.

Blue pill : Film 5.5 (4 holes baseplate) = 8.375" axle.

I’d go 149. I had 144s on an 8.25 and it actually felt great, unfortunately I left my board on the sidewalk loading a table into my car and drove off without it and that was that. Got an 8.25 polar with 149s and it’s the best. The idea of wider trucks / thinner board always irked me but once I actually set it up I couldn’t even really tell that the trucks were wider, they look practically the same. But the board just feels so much more stable and everything feels better. I’m pretty sure lots of people skate 8.25 / 149 and I’d highly recommend it. Another huge plus is if you want to get an 8.5 deck, you have the ideal trucks to match.

How wide were stage 7 and Stage 8... the 146's? I recall them being 8.25 technically?

This. The only time i miss my 149s is on transition. I prefer the 144s on 8.3 in every other situation.

148s(8.25") are perfect. Honestly I'd do 147(8") before 149 for 8.38.
