For me it's 149 with 8.375" or 144 with 8.25. I just love how you can have the right size truck for every board these days. Years ago I remember doing 8.25s with either 149s or 8" trucks with extra washers and neither of them felt perfect.

How wide were stage 7 and Stage 8... the 146's? I recall them being 8.25 technically?
I first had 149s in the stage 9 era and from what I recall they didn't get an update before stage 10, so they were still the stage 8 146 but with a new model number. I could swear the hanger was 150mm, so even a millimeter wider than the current 149.

Ace 44 classics forever. 8.25 to 8.75 even, fuck it. They're not a 144...not a 149. They're just special. You're special, too and you deserve some.

I hope the jump from 7.81 to 8.375 does not affect flip tricks TOO bad

My experience is that some good, some bad. And it was weird the shit that worked better: switch flips I thought were going to be a certain L, I’ve got terrible technique on all my stuff, despite only skating flatground, but switch flips worked better. Kickflips way better on bigger boards. Basically any non rotational flip trick (I need a better way to explain this) works about as well, if not better* with the asterisk noting that shit that I didn’t have, I still don’t have. I got no freebies. That used to be the best part of setting up different gear, finding out what new stuff worked, and what old stuff didn’t work. Now I’m just doing a my war, in a parking lot, going reeeeal slow, trying to do a straight 4, and a 360 flip. Burnt.

My tre flips are basically dead from my ankle injury of 3 years ago. kickflip, frontside flips and switch/nollie flips are what I am worried about for sure! Still debating 144 or 149

Sounding like 144 the move:

More setup flexibility in your preferred size range
The same/similar deck to truck ratio you are currently skating
Easier to flip

I noticed this with the classic ace 55s, venture 5.8s, and these thunder 149s: the stability of the wider truck helps with Ollies. It’s almost like having tighter trucks. Anyways.
I had indy 144s, cast plate hollow kingpin and axle (I back lighter materials on larger setups, doesn’t matter when I’m on the 775), and tbh they skated really decent.

The body parts I would give up to do a frontside flip. Fuck. Fuuuuuuck.

Recently set up an 8.25 (top white board) with 149’s and can’t do it. Set the 149’s on a 8.5 (bottom yellow) and boom! Sweet spot.

I’m getting some 139’s for the 8.25. Boss style.

If your goal is to have the deck and axles flush, then Ace 44 would be one of the few that come really close. If you're set on riding Indy's, I guess you could just put a couple extra washers in your 144s. 149 will work great, but will hotrod very slightly if you use wide wheels.

I often get 8.38 with my Theeve 6.5 (8.5 axle), as Theeve are always a bit narrower than advertised.

I have a set on a 8.125 popsicle and it's great.

I've done both and I think I prefer 8.5 trucks, though 8.25 has benefits too, was with ventures though.

8.5 trucks pros:
More room to grind
Feels more stable, and can run them looser than smaller trucks and have it still feel stable
Less wheelbite
Some tricks that I tend to overflip, flipped slower and better
A little easier to roll away from bad landings
Much better for grinding round rails

8.25 truck pros:
Lighter and more nimble
Turn sharper
Better leverage for most flip tricks, felt a little easier to learn new flatground tricks
Flip ins felt a tad easier
Less jamming when it came to nose/tailslides, felt a little less prone to sticking on a fs noseslide from my nose jamming, may be purely mental
A tiny bit easier to break into powerslides (due to where the wheel is placed in relation to where your foot pushes the board when breaking into a slide)

The benefits of the wider trucks are more noticeable to me, though for someone who has different preferences and priorities I could for sure see the smaller trucks being more appealing. If I skated an 8.6 I think I'd go for 8.5 trucks over 8.75 anyday.

I personally ride 149 and I like it better. Tried 144 and wasn't feeling it. I ride anything from 8.25 to 8.5, 149 feels best for me. Ace 44's (classics) are a close second for me. I probably still would be riding Aces if I didn't get axle slip around halfway through the truck's life.

5.8 Ventures have 147mm axles, so they are closer to a 8.38" truck than a 8.5", the same goes for krux too if I'm remembering correctly.

8.25 deck with 149 truck is a highly viable setup
i was questioning the 147mm statement
5.8s supposedly have 149-150mm hangers/215mm axles
not so much about the difference in mm but more about qc
8.5 trucks with 147mm hangers is more an ace thing

Unpopular opinion but I'm running Indy 159s on an 8.38 FullSE (really closer to 8.4-8.5) at the moment and loving it. I can run these trucks all the way up to 8.75 just by swapping wheels around. A little axle hotrodding out doesn't bother me as long as the wheels are flush.

Mini logo has an 8.38. I honestly think it's a better size than 149/8.5.

I was going off of tactics measurements on the Ventures. The measurements they have listed are correct for the other trucks i have measured so i assumed they are accurate. Let me know if the 5.8s actually have 149mm axles if someone out there can measure them, preferably with with a caliper. I know we are only talking a difference of 2mm but when you have the madness it really does make a difference.

Went skating on my AH 7.81 this morning, and my knees are aching. Anyone have a theory on if wider boards are better for old ass legs? Or if I am just funded (likely). This has what spawned me pondering the upgrade in size

Are you on 129s or 139s? I’ve been off of ‘7.75s’ in part because of truck choices…
For me, smaller setups tend to be kinder on my joints/connective/smaller muscle groups/ligaments.
Some people have mentioned that smaller setups kinda require one to be more up on the balls of their feet, which I understood as a good result, but could possibly be bothering your legs?
In my experience, lower extremity pain comes from: extra weight, muscle imbalance(s), lack of flexibility. I’ve been trying to foam roll a little bit, and started doing some calf raises. I am not a flexible person, and it’s hard to be motivated for that shit. I also weighed 20#s less when I was in high school/‘decent’ at skating.
I’ve generally hated on 8.25 trucks, for no good reason, they might be the answer. Or just hover board that shit with hella axle washers like Ishod (using 8” trucks)

I guess I’m crazed.. I run 159 forged hollows on 8.5, ever once in awhile I setup an 8.38 (I buy either size and keep a decent stack) and they are fine on that too.  I don’t think they stick way out or anything, maybe I can see a hint of axel if I’m really looking..

I meant "fucked " not funded, predictive text was wild. I'm out of skate shape so... i might just be a sore ass bum. Obviously I'm flip flopping on trying an 8.38 lol. I do feel like my 149 purchase was a mistake, if even trying this at all, gonna try the 144s like you mentioned. And do some leg workouts lol
