Went skating on my AH 7.81 this morning, and my knees are aching. Anyone have a theory on if wider boards are better for old ass legs? Or if I am just funded (likely). This has what spawned me pondering the upgrade in size
[close]

Are you on 129s or 139s? I’ve been off of ‘7.75s’ in part because of truck choices…
For me, smaller setups tend to be kinder on my joints/connective/smaller muscle groups/ligaments.
Some people have mentioned that smaller setups kinda require one to be more up on the balls of their feet, which I understood as a good result, but could possibly be bothering your legs?
In my experience, lower extremity pain comes from: extra weight, muscle imbalance(s), lack of flexibility. I’ve been trying to foam roll a little bit, and started doing some calf raises. I am not a flexible person, and it’s hard to be motivated for that shit. I also weighed 20#s less when I was in high school/‘decent’ at skating.
I’ve generally hated on 8.25 trucks, for no good reason, they might be the answer. Or just hover board that shit with hella axle washers like Ishod (using 8” trucks)

I meant "fucked " not funded, predictive text was wild. I'm out of skate shape so... i might just be a sore ass bum. Obviously I'm flip flopping on trying an 8.38 lol. I do feel like my 149 purchase was a mistake, if even trying this at all, gonna try the 144s like you mentioned. And do some leg workouts lol

Fuck working out.

but sadly at this point it is pretty much the only way I’ll get to skate for a few more years, soooo…bring on the Zumba.
If you have 139s, maybe just try that on an 8.25-8.38. This was the size up move for all of us trend hoppers in 2010. Boards got bigger, but I’m soft as baby shit and couldn’t handle the 149s. I know I wasn’t the only one. It was kinda like a reverse of that thing that happened in the 90s when 7.5s came out and everyone had 8” trucks.
139s definitely don’t match 8.25-8.38, but…you’ll be able to flip that shit. And it doesn’t cost anymore. And then when you hate it, and switch to 144s and 149s, you can be a kook of pain like myself with wheelbite marks all over the place.

Wider boards are not easier on old legs, but it does make it easier to land on! Six in one hand, half a dozen in the other for sure. Fwiw I enjoyed 144s and other 8.25 trucks on 8.3 decks

Have you considered letting your wheel shape determine whether you go + or – on the trucks?

I go for the wider trucks if my wheels have a slimmer shape (like a Classic) because the narrow contact patch brings the effective width of the truck in, and I go for the narrower trucks if I’m using square/wide wheels because they do the opposite.

I do the exact opposite. With smaller trucks I use classic shape wheels to maximize grind space and with wider trucks I use bigger wheels or just conical wheels.

Well, I manned up and bought Indy 144s for a new 8.38. Hope this turns out well for me.

You can't go wrong with either or. I'm riding 149s on an 8.38 and I like it. But I've also rode 144s on the same board and liked it.  I just like my 149s a little more for stability and more room to grind.

The struggle is real!

We’re talking 1/8” on either side. 1/4” of ‘extra’ stability…it’s all mental...except when it applies to wheebase, that 1/4" is the REAL DEAL ;P

One of the benefits of being a gear whore is I've enough gear to swap out hangers on the fly for Indy/Royal...no 149 thunders tho.

I am starting to realize a 8.3 on 149s is the perfect deal for me. I skate a lot of curbs but I do wander into a park like a senile old man (which I am) and try to do skateboard stunts on that stuff, and it works for that too.
I thought a Real 8.5 full was going to be “the one” but it kinda feels boaty. Back to the ole 8.3 for me.

OK reminded me of smaller trucks style, for flippery, which is my deal.
Basically trying to recreate my 7.81 deck with 129s... on a bigger scale
figure 8.38 on 144s is a pretty good match. Going to have to skate it a lot right out of the gate to figure out this size I think

Oh fuck. Well I hope/this better work.

In truth, sizing up isn’t so bad. As close as I can be to being succinct: shit that I couldn’t do before, still couldn’t, shit that could do, could do faster and more comfortably.

I hope it works!

"It feels so weird - it's so big. I feel kinda manly though." - Rodney Mullen in Rubbish Heap

This is me right now.

Your theory made sense to me. I just need to put in the work (AKA time) to getting used to a new size.
Part of the fun of skating back in the day was trying new things. Trying to just have fun again!

Stick with same size trucks no matter board size. Skate trucks til they die. Pick board based off graphic. Don't get too technical. A good guitar player can play any guitar good, it's time you put in not the 1/4 inch difference in set up. The dude that takes hand me down set ups is usually better bc he focuses on skating not shopping on the net imo.

That's the rub when you ride 8.3s :) both 8.25 or 8.5 trucks will work, unless you commit to ML or ACE44 classics for your 8.3" truck.

A lot depends on what and how you skate and trick selection. It's not a one size fits all scenario.

I'd never pick a board off a graphic unless it's a re-issue or there were multiple options on a shape I wanted; Shape (dims included) is everything.
