Some say best thing to do is sticking to one shape.

Do you think it makes people better at skating to do so or are you not seeing that point?

If it ain't broke don't fix it. Skating is a mental thing; if you got good gear you're hyped that it's good and it reflects in your abilities.

I've been trying to. Once in a while I'll branch out, whilst still trying to stay within the same ballpark of width, wheelbase, legnth, steepness, taper/fullness of kicks.

But maybe right now I’m hyped on an FA deck and in a few weeks I’m hyped on Quasi 😄
Both good gear, but different shapes.

Do you want to be with the same girl forever, keep the same habits and not risk getting your heartbroken or do you wanna fuck around and meet new people and have different experiences with the risk of getting hurt (buying a board that doesnt work for you)

The nice thing about riding same shapes back to back is not having to adjust when setting up a new deck, you just continue like before but with more pop.
why come?

i switched between allsorts for about a year and it got to the point that gear madness was interfering with my consistency and progression.

I settled on riding Crailtap G027s and have had 4 or 5 in a row now. I'm really enjoying the lack of adjustment and how they work for me, in my year or so of trying loads of decks, they seemed to be the one that worked pretty well for most things.

I have three I like to move between.  Popsicle 8.5, old school 10x30 and the Andy Anderson Heron 9.13

For different applications.  My popsicle is my crappy weather street, my 10x30 is my cruiser and the Heron 9.13 is my go too.

Refuse to change. I go very far out of my way to find 7.88 boards (Polar and DLX are the only two that regularly sell boards in this size).

Really trying to slow down and chill with the deck variety.  Basically just skating the very boring 14.25wb bbs jawn with the slightly fuller kicks… don’t know the name or labelling or anything… the one that passport, topx, carpet (and I’m sure a lot of other companies) seem to mainly use.

I was previously all over the place for a while there.

I stay for a while, make the best out it till i get bored.
Then i look arround for something that interests me and give it a go. If I like it and things get better, i stay there for a while. The circles of life.

I'm from rural Texas so I never really had opportunities to be picky. If it's between 8.5-9 and has trucks and wheels I'm generally stoked. I've definitely ridden a few shapes repeatedly when I got the chance but overall I like trying new things and find it affects my skating minimally. Except trucks where I'm extremely loyal, did thunders only for like 10 years and then switched to Aces like 2 years ago and won't be looking back.

Switching around is why my stack is always increasing - I'll be excited to try a shape and get 2 of the same deck, skate 1 then find a new shape I want to try.

Horrible for consistency, but at least I have narrowed down my wheelbase preference and woodshop choice (BBS).

Nah I just buy whatever 8.25 / 8.3 I like.

That's my only filter. That and good woodshops. Besides that I barely know what a wheelbase is. That stuff messes with you if you overthink it.

Generally takes me like 2 seshes to adjust so it's fine.

I respect people that nerd about this stuff tho. Just not my thing.

as long as its BBS and 8.5 i don't really give a shit. I can get used to anything with a 14"-69" wheelbase in a single sessions time. as long as its shaped like a skateboard i'm good to go.

last deck i had was one of those new Real 'Tropical Dream' decks (8.5/14.1"/32") thats shaped like a mini foam football

current deck is whatever 8.5 Hopps i grabbed off the wall...they both skate

I like to switch around. As long as the dimensions are within the ballpark it's ok.

I have a general shape I like to stick to, and then bounce around to different brands. I almost exclusively ride 8.5" and prefer a full shape with a bigger square nose, so a lot of FA/hockeys, Quasi, Polar P2, Real Fulls. I think my next set up will be a Real Full SE or AH Short eagle with the 14" wheelbase to see how I enjoy that.

Then I usually keep a cruiser/curb board as a back up that I can get weird with and try different shaped decks for fun. Best of both worlds.

What trucks are you skating? You don’t care about wheelbase or tail length ?
Is it hard to adjust to steeper decks like the FA when you skated flatter once before for you?

I went through the madness last year and switched to thunder for a bit, but i've settled on Indy 149s. I have a set of Forged Hollows on my shaped board and some Titaniums on the street board. It's always a bit of adjustment when setting up a new deck but I don't stress the dimensions too much, and I usually stick to steeper kicks/more concave as opposed to mellower boards. At worst I have a session where my timing is off and I ghost pop a bit, but usually I adapt pretty quickly.

All that being said, I did just buy some Ace AF1s for the shaped board so that'll be an interesting experiment.

When i was a broke student, same thing every time. Chapman blanks, can't beat the consistency and price.

Now I have job and can afford to splurge a bit on skating. I be switching up trucks, wheels, boards, everything. But when I go back to that old setup, everything feels right at home and cozy.

I switch.

I've tried getting the same deck and it either gets boring or you start wondering why you're failing or flailing when you should have that deck wired.

I like the surprise of finding out a new shape is more functional than it originally looked or when it makes a trick you struggle with suddenly a joy.

In other words, skateboarding is the mistress. Different decks are like different sexual positions. Tried and true is good, but a fun fling with a strangely kinky shape is too good to pass up for me.

I never really paid much mind to anything other than width until after I started skating again in 2020. I stuck to 8.5-8.63, trying different companies and woodsheds. I soon found that I still liked BBS wood the best. Then through a trade with the legendary trader @art hellman, I swooped a Real Full SE 8.5 14.38 WB and as soon as that session started I knew this was the shape I wanted to skate. Hadn't felt such a perfect for me shape since I was a kid and everything felt perfect ;)

either way, I've got a few stacked up in the freezer and will grab more when I see em on sale in the event Real stops making them.

They're all Zion and Ishod decks, who I don't really enjoy as skaters, but the wood is dope and the graphics are cool enough for me.

Well-defined ambiguity, I'm already on somebody's list as a casualty

I always try to skate the same shape because for some reason everything I like never sticks around , I find boards I like and then I buy a good amount to stock so I’m not left searching for a similar one when I’m needing a board…

As long as it's BBS or Woodchuck ~8.38-8.5 then I'm good. Tried skating FA/Hockey and some Full shapes, not my cup of tea, but I can see why people love them.

i switch around shape, never was loyal to any brand. but i generally kept the same size, never had more than 1 pair of trucks on the go til now.
i can do any of my tricks on any board from like 7.5 to 9.5
concave and kicks dont really matter mcuh to me
i am on a anti hero blue meanie shape right now (8.75) i just had to get used to it but i can do anything i do on a 8" with it (the size i have rode for the last like 10+ years)
8.5 is probably the best size for someone with my shoes size (11 mens) but i dont really care its such a small increase in performance and riding bigger boards is fun

I'm sure it depends on the pro. Some guys can probably skate anything, but I know I've seen videos of guys referencing specific shapes. I remember there was a epicly laterd about girl/chocolates anniversary and Jerry Hsu is looking at a board that he says is his shape (maybe G047 if I recall correctly?).

there's also a jenkem video with AO talking about how girl shapes had tails that were too small, and when he left he was trying antiiheros and was enjoying different shapes.
