Leg/Calf Cramps
« on: March 16, 2022, 06:00:24 AM »
Anyone deal with severe leg/calf cramping? I'm at a loss at this point as to how to mitigate it and have just chalked it up to 'its never going to get better'. I drink nearly a gallon of water a day, stretch, etc and about 2hrs after every session my calves will just twitch for an extended period of time. If it does result in getting a cramp, its almost so painful that it brings me to tears. I bought some leg cramp pills to try to see if that helps but I haven't really felt a difference.

Too much water? A gallon is nearly double recommended amount.

I would assume over exertion and not enough good sleep

Take some pickle juice with you next time, drink the juice right when you start cramping, if it goes away right away then it's a nervous system issue that can only be fixed by rest and slowly building the smaller or weaker muscles (pickle juice is not the cure)

If it doesn't go away right away then you need more electrolytes. Add salt to your water and eat potatoes at dinner for the potassium to hydrate you for tomorrow, the starch to repair your muscles and carbs to help you sleep better

Life is about good sleep and good nutrition so you can play for as long as you can. If not you just get old and die

Sounds like a charley horse. I tend to get mine in the inner thigh area. It’s bad enough that I Frankenstein walk around writhing in pain. A sight to see I’m sure. Sometimes water alone isn’t enough; you need electrolytes. I keep some electrolyte powder in my skate bag and at home just in case

In addition to what others have suggested, magnesium

Magnesium tablets are the shit.

I don't think anything is a magic fix, but a regular program of magnesium, potassium (banana), water/electrolyte (my pop is a long distance runner and swears by generic pedialyte/h20 ratio 1/3). Self massage with an alpha ball (or just a lacrosse ball, street hockey, or tennis ball) on the trigger point can help too. Trigger points... Look em up. Game changers
