EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation)
« on: June 18, 2022, 10:17:47 PM »
Not sure if there is already a thread for this but I wanted to hear if anyone has had any experience with EMS for rehab or strengthening?

I know there's a long history of folks going to doctors and PTs for professionally and monitored EMS, but I'm more interested in the consumer market products available that purport to help with overall recovery and some development of fast twitch muscle fibers.

Are they worth it? Are they just snake-oil/Ronco scams?

EDIT:

I know it's not a cure-all, but was looking at it from the perspective of having another tool in the box to complement other forms of rehab, recovery, and development.

Nice! Did you get it for rehab/recovery or development?

I was given a TENS machine by a PT after a car accident to use on my neck, not sure how helpful it was for that. I did start using it later on my legs after really hard bike rides when I was cycling a lot, and it seemed like it helped a little bit? I would do it on my quads and calves and run it at as high of a setting as I could stand. It was cool to see the muscle flex when the electric current was on. Never tried it after skating.

Even if it's a placebo effect and it just makes you think you're recovering better, there's still some value to that and they're relatively inexpensive. The sticky pads just get really gross after a while and buying the replacements is annoying.

Use it mostly on my knees, but it will get rid of weird cricks in my neck when I sleep weird. Definitely worth the minor investment of funds and time zapping yourself.

My girlfriend is recovering from cancer.

Radiation and chemo attacked the pelvis pretty badly. Her ohysiotherapist uses EMS to stimulate the muscle around it (needles are brought into the muscle and stimulated with shocks).

My gf is very happy with the results she had so far.

@DISTANT RUMORS Sorry to hear about your girlfriend, but glad she's on the mend.

Treatment for cancer is rough, some of my family went through it when I was a kid.

Wishing her a speedy and full recovery.

I was sitting in my car, stopped in traffic, and got rear ended by another car. My car was totaled. Everyone in my car including me got taken to the hospital in ambulances.

I went to a chiropractor for 9 months or so and they used EMS on my lower back. I was no longer comfortable jumping down gaps / big stair sets / big rails, but the treatment must have done something because I'm still skating 20 years later.
