Tips to putting on a good skate event at my local park
« on: April 27, 2022, 07:29:09 AM »
My park is a pretty popular park in a popular city that hasn’t had the thrill of a nice skate jam and contest in a while. I know a guy who put one on a year ago but am wanting to do another one. What should I know while planning this event?

Hit up your local shops. They can spread the word and maybe provide prizes.

-Get up at 7am.
-Have a nice breakfast.
-Hydrate well.
-Get to the skatepark around 8am.
-Skate by yourself for two hours.
-Go home when more than 3 people show up.

Always a good event.

Talk to the shop thats closest to the park. They will tell you if you have to organize with the city or if you have to pay insurance to host the event. Product is cool for the kids but older dudes arent going to bust their ass for a free deck, they want cash.

Be prepared to pay money out of your own pocket to make everything happen.

Get prizes, build in some structure so everyone can get down ie. treasure hunt, beginner skate, best trick…….try and delegate a bit so you have time to engage people and make them feel welcome ie. parents, kids, new skaters.

Get some sort of PA or megaphone.

Consider the pros/cons doing it proper/permits, or doing it rogue…

stating the obvious, but events cost time and money. Giveaways, prizes, generating buzz, etc. Working with a skate shop or brand is a good idea because it could be a good business opportunity for them to generate awareness and some sales.

Everyone mentioned it but working with shops/ brands for giveaways, etc. isnt a bad idea

[email protected] [email protected] [email protected] ask them if there's room in their marketing budget this fiscal year for best trick packages and giveaways. If not ask them if they can hook you up next fiscal year, which might be in July

Do you want to do a standard best run/best trick contest? Which is fine, you got to think about time requirements, judging, format (jam style? Single runs? Everyone skate one feature at a time?) sound equipment, maybe some portable shade, etc. They are fun, but i prefer watching more unique stuff.

Weird, fun, unexpected challenged, like Dime contests. Fairly objective goals that are easily judges, like height or speed. Even some side contests that anyone (spectators) can enter and have a chance of winning: most 360s, longest ho-ho, most kickflips in a row (everyone does it together, anyone who falls off their board is disqualified). Inclusive stuff, that makes it feel like a community thing as well.

Product and money are the obvious answers.

It helps too if you bring an outside obstacle into the park. This way there’s something new for people who skate the park everyday. And I agree with having some random contests or challenges - long Ollie contest, high Ollie contest, race, just something to break up the usual carcass toss

Free tacos is a must, free water, 40oz. For a board is a fun one if theres a liquor store nearby, first one to bring a 40oz. With a receipt keeps the board and some gear.
Its fun because everyone forgets about it once the people foing for it go around the block, but shit gets wild on the final yards hahaha
