For sure.
It still trips me out to see that in run of the mill supermarkets. I honestly don't think it sells well, because it's always heavily discounted.
Anecdotally, the majority of people I know have never eaten it. But they jokingly call it "fish."
Whaling on a small scale has been part of the culture of certain regions, it wasn't a significant part of the Japanese diet until after WWII when protein sources were scarce.
Now it's more of a hill the right wing nationalists/historical revisionists like to die on. They call it "an integral part of Japanese culture" or something like that. Scary thought though, the people who consume it are the ones in charge of the country...the last people we'd want going "mad hatter" from eating swimming thermometer meat.
