Tell me about your VPN!
« on: May 17, 2022, 04:10:54 PM »
I have no need to use a VPN, but I know how they work and what they are. Seems like we have some seriously tech saavy users these days, so I'm wondering about y'alls experience slapping the interwebs around with a VPN? Yay? Nay? Metza metza? Does it make you feel safer? I'm not really sure what the point is for regular web use. Please share anecdotes and the like

I pay 40 a year or something for Private Internet Access VPN.  I mainly use it at work for streaming sports.  I turn it on if I'm going to torrent something as well.

Your heart is in the right place!
I will be watching this thread for Genius Bar style input.

I saw this documentary where this dude paid specialists to infiltrate has infrastructure just to expose weakpoints, the specialists hacked his network & had his data down to the keystrokes by the end of the week.

I have been fighting against having to endure a new monthly recurring purchase, but HBO should be lower on my priority hierarchy than protecting my data, and I can tell you ALL about HBO but know nothing about a VPN.

So please---

They are a good idea for privacy. It is amazing how easily we are all tracked.

A VPN won't solve that but it does protect us from our internet service providers, tracking, cataloging, and selling out internet data.

This has me thinking of hardened android/no-google alternatives for phones, like grapheme or copperhead OS

I'd only run a VPN if i was trying to bootleg Netflix or Spotify from another country imo. That or if I'm a streamer trying to protect my isp info.

Basic but good explanation of some of the issues and advantages. Honestly most of the time you're just paying to slow your traffic down. There's other ways to track you that are just as effective. I wouldn't use 99% of them if I were actually serious about anonymity.

They are useful if you're trying to get around geoguards, using a dodgy network, or spamming a community message board with transphobic hate speech.

I'm sure they can see it but don't care.  I just don't want my work getting hit with a DMCA notice or something.

I work from home right now and have a pretty decent little network for my office (for both me and my wife), we used AVG's VPN, and while it does the job, it def slows my web connection down like Buttfart said (and we have a business line).

Having said, I just paid into Google One (mainly for storage), but Google has a VPN that works beautifully. I can barely tell a difference (it's slight, but not annoyingly so).

FWIW, I up/download at least a gig of data to and from work a day, but often times way more (big db files and RAW photos, uncut video).

Using Mullvad VPN, mostly out of comfort but they’re pretty fucking serious with their privacy. You can even post them in cash if you want to, kinda cool in an insane way.

I’m using it on both my phone and my laptop, keeping it enabled all the time because I haven’t noticed any slow downs. Think they got chosen to be the tech provider for the Firefox VPN, so that probably says something?

I like it, I recommend it. No I don’t get paid to say this, haha.

There are plenty of ways to protect your privacy without a VPN. I’m not opposed to them and I use one for work daily, but whoever said you’re paying to slow down your internet is correct. No commercial VPN is getting around the whatever insane and unimaginable packet sniffing technology is in use by the NSA, FSB, CIA, MI6, and Chinese cyber security (so secret the department lacks a name), and in fact they supposedly look more closely at known VPN traffic than the rest. You might get fewer cookies but you can do nearly the same with Privacy Badger and/or Pi Hole.
This is not my SOTY. I'm telling my kids there was no SOTY for 2021

It doesn't make sense for me to use a VPN since I use proxy servers.  Since in the case of resident proxies, IP addresses are issued by home Internet service providers, the probability that they will be blacklisted and blocked is extremely small. In addition, these addresses can be issued dynamically and constantly change for each user. At the same time, server proxies usually outperform resident proxies in terms of speed, and are also cheaper. You can easily find residential proxy online the internet and use them. This will be a great solution for you.

I used NordVPN to be safer online and see stuff that is not in my country. It was okay and suitable for using Wi-Fi at cafes. But for everyday things on the internet, it didn't change much.

I stopped using VPNs because they could be slow, and I wasn't sure they were keeping my info safe. So, I switched to individual proxies. I like them more because they're faster and I can use different ones for different websites. For example, if I need to check something blocked in my country, I pick a proxy from another country. It's straightforward and works quickly.

With proxies, I've had a better experience. They're simple to use, and I can choose one depending on what I need. I usually buy proxy from here – only about $1.4 each. It's worth it because they're reliable and give me more privacy control.
