Vans Showdown 2022

[WARNING: Awful AWFUL audio... don't turn it up too loud or you might get ear blasted]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_6fd7n5EKg

I saw a bunch of pros I follow posting from this event, so I checked it out. Mostly non-contest skaters participating. Baker, Quasi, Hockey, Palace etc. all got to make their own obstacles for the event for the skaters to skate (the Quasi one looks amazing). Really cool idea. They've even got a ramp over a car, which all contests should have.

They're calling it an "inclusive" skate contest. The contest is just sorta jam sessions... men and women skating together. No official point system, just based on vibes. Mens' and womens' 1st place both getting $10K for the prize.

However, the stream of it is really really rough. Constant audio problems. Weird cheesy stock music playing in the background while they skate. Its to cover up the copyrighted music that's actually playing at the event... but man for such a cool event having stock music over it is such a hilarious contrast. It wouldn't be too bad, but its often mixed way too loud. Its even playing over the commentators just chatting at the desk together.

Seems closer to what skateboard "contests" should be. Wondering if anyone else saw some cool IG clips from it or anything. Anyone watch it live or in-person?

EDIT: I think more contests need to have jam sessions to stock music rip-offs of Ace of Spades, Bohemian Like You, and The Home Depot Theme Song like this one has.

Vans Downtown Showdown contests were the best contests in the 00's, maybe ever. This seems like a cool update to include the park style kids, but the old versions were classic. Check them out.

How did the camera operators fuck up this bad? Always changing cameras the moment somebody is about to pop their trick, then filming some part of the contest where nothing happens.
Even the announcers complained about it. Must have been sick to be there but I don't recommend watching this

yeah, i watched this coz it was my day off and i was baked trying to do nothing. the audio was definitely a trip and the cameras were bizarre, i think they should've just left all the cameras static and had them each focus on an obstacle - they missed a lot of tricks...

did seem like a fun event though and really what most skate comps should be like. the documentation of it however was poor at best.

Oh fuck yeah, thanks.

I started the thread and I couldn't even get through it. The camera work finally made me give up.

Hope they do this again next year with better production.

wow, there were some pretty wild tricks randomly thrown in the middle of the edit:
– Vincent Milou's pop shove-it to backside smith grind
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-V7aaYyB4M&t=212s
(and then to backside lipslide on the same rail)
– Giovanni Vianna's caballerial to hurricane
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-V7aaYyB4M&t=358s
(and to bennet grind right before)
– Alec Spinosi's (first time hearing about him) backside bigspin to 50-50
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-V7aaYyB4M&t=401s

i attended it in person. way sicker than the video recap showed. the jams were super hectic so the whole event was so much more fun to watch than the sterilized contests, ie sls, olympics, x games.

This reminded me to watch the videos of the individual obstacles from the 2006 Vans Downtown Showdown. Good times.
