any fellow Karate Pals in the house? I first heard Bed Is In The Ocean senior year in highschool and that album always stuck out. It wasn't until 6 months ago or so I gave their whole discog a spin. Dudes voice is super unique. Psychedelic slam poetry lyrics.

Some Boots is next level. Such groovy basslines. Sporadic jazz fusion guitar licks. This is a god damn great band.

Karate is sick. I honestly wrote them off for a long time because they didn't click when I was younger and digging deep into bands that are considered 'similar'

The album that got me into em was Pockets. I love the first track
https://youtu.be/Z-EnrhB1h4I

I have been slow to dig around the rest of their discography though, in no rush. I will check some boots cuz you posted it. You gonna catch them on their reunion tour? I should buy a ticket....

I had a similar relationship with the band when I was younger. I didn't have the ability to appreciate what they were doing. didn't know about a reunion tour! I'll check the dates now but I doubt they'll touch my state. enjoy that album. Lmk what you think. Airport is a stand out.

Edit: listening to Pockets. Thanks for posting.

i was really into this band in high school, revisited them somewhat recently and couldn't help but feel like geoff farina's vocals/lyrics on the later albums ruined a lot of tracks for me, like that song where he's scandalized by his friends having a bag of weed. instrumentation is fantastic though, the last half of "this day next year" is some of my favorite music ever.

just remembered i used to loop the intro to "ice or ground" and freestyle to it, that bassline is too funky

I love Karate. The sophisticated gentleman’s indie band. The Bed is In the Ocean and In Place of Real Insight are both amazing albums. They have a distinct, smooth, targeted sound that they pull off the extremely well.

I never knew other people appreciated Karate! What struck me most about them is that they were more akin to the bands out of Chicago vs. Boston. They had that feel of a Chicago area jazz influenced band, and the chops to back up the influence.

Severely underrated, and brings a smile to my face to see this thread. Working with my father I’ve often got that question “who is this?”, due strictly to the skill level of the musicians he was hearing.

Too good!
Do you get deja vu, huh?

Glad to have you in the thread, man! Yeah, they're one of those bands where the musicianship is undeniable.

I played Karate for my brother recently, and we have, not an EXTREMELY different taste in music, but his go to bands are not mine and vice versa. He's more into metal and progressive metal, but I played Some Boots for him in the car one day and after being somewhat silent for the first few tracks he goes, "I really like this."

That felt like such a huge win because the only other song he's said that about was Big Fat Fuck by Ween. Ha!

I like the first three albums, but Karate never really hit me. I’m a huge fan of Geoff Farinas side project „The secret stars“ though, that started a little before Karate. I was really into that four track singer songwriter vibe.

i'm surprised we don't see karate being used in videos, ever. if any of those trendy ny kids knew shit about anything they'd be editing to songs like this.

@yghartsyrt - the bed is in the ocean, some boots, and unsolved are where it's at. those are the a few of their last albums. I urge you to at least check out Some Boots.
