Pretty good listen. I’m sure Slap will have some things to say about his self adulation.

Frankie Spears always struck me as an interesting case in the skate world. On paper he should have so many "cool guy" points.

He is from the Tri-State area (dunno if he is from the city), came up with Tyshawn Jones, rides for a cool-ish legacy board brand, and is/was on a big shoe company.

Tyshawn and Frankie shared a part together as little kids in an old indie VX video from the early 2010s.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BgI216w27Lg
The video part is unlisted on YouTube BTW, interesting tidbit.

He didn't get any billing with Supreme like Tyshawn and all the cherry kids did in that era, Adidas has never done anything with him despite Spears being on/flow basically since Tyshawn if I recall correctly.

It seems like Spears kind of was placed in front of a lot of the same opportunities as Tyshawn Jones. And yet the difference in their career trajectories is astonishing. While Tyshawn is a once in a generation talent and the difference in skating ability and style between him and Spears is huge, Sean Pablo kinda rode in on that same wave and has had multiple colorways with Converse.

Sean Pablo is alright at skating sure, but Frankie Spears nollie flipped into the Miami Triangle lol. I don't think it's a skill question.

Can any NYC /industry heads on burner accounts chime in here? Is it an attitude thing? People don't like his style? His fits? Did a specific thing happen?

There seems to be more at play than he just didn't quite cut it to make it big. Maybe that, maybe I'm just bored and on the outside looking in.

He's also insanely talented at skateboarding. Not the best style in the world, but it's crazy that Spears gets barely any love from NYC skate world hubs like QS or the skate industry at large.

Probably won't listen to the podcast lmao.

He’s definitely closer to Tyshawn skill wise than Sean Pablo lol. He just doesn’t seem super marketable or memorable. But every time I see him skate it’s fucking dope.

I think if you compare anyone to Tyshawn they're going to be found lacking but yeah Frankie Spears' style isn't exactly easy on the eyes and Alien 2.0 (besides the Joeys) is sadly boring.

“I’m not being cocky it’s just facts”

Idk it seems like Franky can’t accept that skateboarding, even a contest, isn’t entirely objective. even tho he did technically difficult tricks, that doesn’t mean he’s entitled to the win automatically

Yo, did that video part ^ just end with a back 270 to front smith grind on the handrail? Or was that just a sloppy 270 lip? Also some of the most enjoyable Tyshawn footage I've seen, he was killing it at an early age. Thanks for sharing that.
Is there any money in skateboarding film anymore?
I dunno about money, but the fun is boomin.

@Madam, I'm Adam I totally agree that his real street part was sick, I especially like the kinked rail grind to hippy jump out. But I feel that the music and cinematography didn't necessarily help his skating translate into a win of the highly coveted hearts and minds. Plus he was up against some real talents. I could easily see why someone would say Frankie Spears had the best submission, but I don't think it was anything like an open and shut case. I thought Milton Martinez, Chris Colbourn, and Jake Anderson had the best parts actually.
*edit- oh man, I just listened to some of his interview. He sounds delusional.

He was robbed. That part was totally fucked, he fakie heeled into the NYC courthouse bank. Also he has ties to the five families and his sponsors are probably afraid to stop sending him product

Lolol imagine shier in a sit down a bunch of mob bosses negotiating an adidas contract.

It’d be a funnier image if corporations in the us weren’t 10x as ruthless as any made man back in the day.I mean Coca Cola has foreign death squads to squash unions.

I have no idea but looks like Frankie is a suburbs kid while Tyshawn is a inner city/projects kid. Supreme deemed Tyshawn cool and took him under his wing, propping him to the position where he is today. Just another example of: it’s not what you know but who you know.

He's back in DFW, where he grew up, after being in SoCal for a bit. Not sure who's been hooking him up lately, but he's definitely been ripping out here. I know he's tight with Neen since he's been out here but not sure if he's still getting the Baker/DW hookup.
