Do Your Emotions Affect Your Session?
« on: July 09, 2022, 07:18:34 AM »
Do you skate better or worse or no difference if you are happy, angry, sad, dealing with drama, depressed, joyous, etc?

I think when I was younger I could channel some of my emotional state into my skating in a positive way, a la Christian Slater aggression session.

Now that I'm blessed with so many years, I think that I need to be in a good head space going into a session to begin with or it just isn't going to happen like I want.

Anybody else have feelings?

Thank you in advance for the therapy.

Yeah definitely, but it kinda goes both ways.

If I'm in a shit mood, sometimes skating will get me out of it and other times it'll plunge me deeper into the depths of despair. If I'm in a good mood I'm probably more likely to have a good skate though, or at least not mind so much if I don't have the best session.

These days I kinda tend not to skate if I'm feeling like shit just for the risk of it making me worse but I've definitely had sessions where a good skate has sorted me out. Wish it was easier to tell which way it was gonna go though lol.

Absolutely. When I'm pissed off I skate way more aggressively and try shit I won't normally do or try. When I'm depressed I have a shitty session until I slam and wonder why a forty odd year old man is playing with useless wooden toys, then start to cheer up.

as much as i love skateboarding, the act itself has rarely, if ever, been a cathartic outlet for me when i'm bummed.
i usually don't skate as much when im bummed. and when i do force myself to skate despite my bumming, i just cruise around and don't enjoy it really.
so yeah, my emotions do affect my session.

i rarely get pissed off or angry. i don't recall an angry session.
the same applies to working out, cycling, or any other physical activity when i'm feeling blue. i'll do it, but i'll just feel the same during and after.

nothing but respect to all those who are capable of letting out their frustrations, pain, and anger or whatever they got during a session or cycling, working out, etc. i always hear it from skaters and read interviews about it.
must be nice!

I just want everyone to know that I'm only 32.8% skateboarder, and that's on a good day. The rest is just soy and cum.

Oddly enough, I always skate better when I have anxiety about losing tricks or style when away from
The board for a while. Also when there is something traumatic in my life, the sessions were more uplifting or rewarding

Back when I first started posting on slap back in 06ish I was skateboarding really good, for awhile I thought I was just plateauing at my peak ability, now I know it was because I had some serious mental problems at the time and the meds I was taking for my mental anguish were just making shit even worse. No medications whatsoever and abstinence from illegal drug usage ended up being the cure for my mental instability,,,Even though it was pretty fun at times being borderline, bat shit crazy.. and I was skateboarding above my average self. But in hindsight   would’ve rather been less crazy

I skated some sessions at department with you at that time and you were killing it.  I vaguely remember you doing an alley oop frontside 180 fakie 5-0 fakie flip out on that bank to steep bank ledge.  It’s good to hear your doing well these days!

Yes, 100%. But as another poster said - it goes both ways in that some time on my board usually leaves me elated for up to days at a time.
On the negative side of things, it can often be hard to make myself actually go out and skate even though it’s (more often than not) rewarding when I do so. I hate that I’ve taken so much time away from skating or skating less at times but I love it just as much as I ever did.

It does for sure.
I skate way better when i just don't think about it that much. Usually when I'm out with my best mate.
When we meet up there's so much stuff we talk about and laugh about.. we just play some games of skate, some games of line and talk about stupid shit.
So I'm chilled and not so stressed about not landing everything or even anything.
But most of the time when we skate together, I land most of the tricks i want to.
You can't buy happiness but you can buy a Skateboard.

Skateboarding helps me with my emotions and sometimes makes me feel down when I can’t land a trick that I usually can. Recently I can’t get an ankle roll out of my head. So right now I’m trying not to think at all when I skate just feel.

There are still many human emotions I do not fully comprehend – anger, hatred, revenge. But I am not mystified by the desire to be loved – or the need for friendship. These are things I do understand.
When nothing in society deserves respect, we should fashion for ourselves in solitude new silent loyalties.

there's a dialectical relationship between the feeling and the performance on the board I can come in feeling good and miss a few tricks and feel bad or I can come in feeling bad get lucky on a few things and stuff feeling better The one plays in with the other it's a kind of dance

When I’m battling with something like depression, shit day at work, arguing with my partner ect and go for a skate. I find I usually have my best skates. When I’m skating it takes my mind off everything else in my life. That’s why I fucking love this shit. After going through my own mental health problems, alcoholism not to mention my physical problems like herniated disc’s and a bone spur that pinched a nerve. Skating just takes my mind to somewhere else, I can’t explain it. No matter what’s going on in my life at the time this wooden toy cures everything even if it’s for a couple hours and I think that’s why I have my best skates when I’m going through some shit.

Can’t speak on anything but my own experiences. That being said, skating saves me from going over the edge in so many things that affect me personally.

Yes, it varies like others have mentioned. Skating has improved my mindset several times, but there have been a few occasions when i went out for a skate when i was in a bad headspace, and had a horrible session that made it even worse. Its hard for me to know when i just need to chill and do nothing sometimes.

Always. And always for the worse.

Probably skate best when I'm in a good mood. Have a nice bummer streak going though so I suck even worse than usual these days.

Only do stuff I'm certain to have fun with when bummed. Lots of slappies and ollies over reasonably high things. Transition, if available. Stuff that feels powerful and in control when life got ya feeling powerless.

Good mood/high energy will often lead to trying new things or pushing myself in one way or another with a big smile.
