A pretty wide-spanning genre I guess but I would describe it as music that is clearly influenced by hardcore but has evolved into something more technical/nuanced/experimental or has influence from music that is clearly unrelated to hardcore or adjacent genres like punk or metal..  I think the quintessential post-hardcore band is Fugazi.

What was the first post-hardcore band?
