Long Wheelbase Gang (15”+)
« on: August 04, 2022, 11:08:47 AM »
Been riding this Slam Time Heated Wheel board that’s 9.6” wide and 15.75” wheel base.  Feels very good… my feet are finally under my shoulders when I skate

Also just saw in Lucero’s Bobshirt he rides a 16.5?  (Side question: why isn’t he making some of those as Black Label boards?)

Lotta old boards like The MG Vision are 16+…

Thought it would be nice to have a safe space for all of us.  Tired of being told to ”try a longboard”… I have a 14.5 WB board and 14.75 cruiser I dig… but it seems like there aren’t enough of these long setups for us available on the market…

15"ers feel so much more secure on big transition. Been awhile since I set one up though. The Jimmy Wilkins Real 8.85 looks real tempting.

Been looking at a bunch of long wheelbase lately but board prices in Aus are kinda crazy right now. Used to regularly get Stu Graham creature boards which I think we're 15+ and I'd ride with thunders which give it a little nudge more. Second dumbest equipment based slam I ever took tho was forgetting I have to hit roll ins on a diagonal or Manny a bit like I'm rolling in a quarter and the board bottomed out and I flew into the ground like a human javelin

How tall are you guys riding these long wb decks?
Asking because I'm only 5'7"(172cm), but always liked skating longer boards, 14.5wb feels great, even for tech stuff.
Only after joining slap have I found out that this seems to be far from the norm. Wondering if there's anybody out there smaller than me and riding a 15"+ on all kinds of terrain.

I have a Lifeblood Bryce Kanights Gargoyle setup for a cruiser/slappy deck, but I haven't put much work on it. 8.75" wide, 15" WB. I love a wider wheelbase but it's hard to find a deck with the dimensions I like.. I'm short but broad shouldered. The Huffer comes close, but maybe a little too wide for me.

Black Label does have a couple up right now with a 16 inch wb, I believe these are currently the longest they have.

I wonder what Lucero's exact setup is.

I’m 6’2” and kinda broad shouldered so the wide WB feels pretty natural.

I agree it seems like shorter boards are in vogue at the moment.

I don’t like longer wheelbases really but that board looks sick. I have been wanting to cop some 215’s…I do love flipping my board though which I’m sure would feel very difficult on this whip for a variety of reasons, wheelbase being one of them. Kickflips feel more solid, but tre flips just dissipate into the wind. I have been skating a 13.75” the last year and a half on 159’s so this would be…different.

This kid at the park fakie flipped my 15.75 board on flat and it looked so sick.

Not much of a flipper myself but I love how big boards look getting tossed around in the air.

6'2" and 14.75-15" wb with an 8.75 deck is perfect for me. Like the length to be 32.5-33"

My Powell Flight is 8.75x33x15" and it's the best feeling deck I've ever had.

Got some Welcome evil twin shapes coming in, 8.75x33.45x14.75, stoked to try my first twin tail

I have this as my cruiser with bones rough riders and although it’s getting slightly off topic since it’s a 14.75, it’s what made me see how nice a longer wheelbase is.

Wish there were more BBS Baker Boys shapes like these.  I’ve grown a little tired of Heroin graphics, which is unfortunate since they probably do something close to it.

I thought I had read the specs somewhere, but can't find it right this minute, but someone I know set up almost a similar board a while back, redrilling his 10" Lucero board out to 16.5" or so wb too, which was a bit weird to skate on flat, but it definitely worked well going fast on the vert ramp at the indoor park I was at.

Black Label deck 10" x 33.25" with 16.5" wb
Indy 169s
1/4" risers
60mm wheels
Rails

Anyone could DM him on instagram or ask too.

If that doesn't come up, here is a screen shot of the board anyway.

I talk too much about skateboards.  Sorry.

I’ve only ever gone up to 15” wheelbase and I’ve liked both decks I’ve had with such a long wheelbase. Even 15” is hard to come by let alone anything longer.

I just set up a new cruiser but maybe at some point getting one of those Lucero decks with 16” wheelbase for a cruiser could be nice. Black Label and Lucero are so rad. Unfortunately Black Label decks are really quite difficult to get a hold of in Europe.

15" wheelbase decks can be fun. I have tried a few shapes:

Creature Navarrette 8.8, 15"
Creature Wilkins 8.8, 15"
Powell 8.75, 15"
Powell JM Duran 8.9, 17"

Navarrette and Powell 8.75 are my favorites. The 8.75 from Powell is the most comfortable. The JM Duran deck is pretty nice,  but big and heavy. I didn't like the Wilkins deck due to its short tail 6.3

Will post some pictures later if someone is interested

I often look at some of those older boards (as well as skate some now and then) but think the lack of nose, both length and concave, makes me worried I would fall off the front of the board nowdays, as I am so used to riding normal modern concave boards, compared to what we used to ride back in the 80s.

That is why I like boards from DLX like the green giant eagle deck, or any other big Black Label, Scram and a few other brands with the normal modern concave that still feel like any other board I have, but in a much larger scale.

Most of the bigger boards from those brands I have are second hand from others, but they make such good cruisers and pump track boards for me, as I just cannot skate big ramps, but still enjoy the longer wheelbases and wider feel of them.

I talk too much about skateboards.  Sorry.

I'm 6'4 and my knees hurt. I thought a longer board where I can have a wider more athletic stance, not feel like my ankles are tied together. I am riding a 9" 15wb popsicle and it's comfortable but I can't ollie as high and it takes more effort so I switch back and forth. I have a Dogtown "Biggest Boy" 10" 16wb I have yet to try.

Funny enough I met someone with this deck (not the complete) today, didnt have a tape measure on me but compared my 15.75 board and the MG was a little longer, 16.25 seems right.  Also after seeing it in person, I think I’d only use it as a cruiser, that flat, short nose with no concave seems a bit sketchy for anything else

I've been riding 14" wheelbase lately, saw this thread the other day and thought ewwwww. Then today on a whim I scoop a 9er with a 15" wheelbase lol. Ace 77's are on it. Sucks it rained today I can't wait to try it out on transition and curbs.

I’m talking about these:

Real deal 85-86 Vision Gonz boards. Not the reissue ‘the original’ ones. Interestingly, I just measured the Gonz and roses(86-87) and the color your own graphics(smoking mermaid 87-88) and those are 14 7/8”. Gonz decks were all I rode until my friend and me started getting flow boxes. I’ve got a pretty big pile of them still.

As for modern stuff I don’t mind 15” on 10 - 10.5” but anything past that I can’t handle anymore. Anything 9” or under I can’t go past 14.5” now.

Super interesting, thank you.  Very odd they’d misrepresent the dimensions of the MG reissue as an exact replica of the original if that isnt the case.  Seems so unnecessary.

I usually ride 14.25-14.5 but currently on 14.75 and I love it. Would like to step up to 15" but that's definitely max wb to me.

Would be curious to try an 8.38 - 8.5 with a 14.75 - 15 in wb
