watching in 480/30p > 720/60p
« on: August 29, 2022, 10:34:02 AM »
at least for things filmed with modern HD cameras. 60p (60i, really) for VX footage is somehow OK, but man, I've been reverting 60p 720p stuff down to 480/30 for years now. just wanted to see how many others do this.

I think the real question is why doesn't YT just offer a 720 or 1080/30 option... probably no one besides skaters care about this shit.

i dont really encounter skating at 60 fps very often... usually someone trying out the GH5 for the first time or something.

I hate 60fps for skate videos. People who export videos at 60fps they just like to ruin their edits

I spoke too soon. Ive run into this a few times since I posted in here. I don't mind it that much at all, and I like consuning things the way the filmer intended

Nobody's stopping you from filming in 4k 60 fps.

By all means make a full video that nobody will ever watch.

Someone wrote "HD in 240p is basically VX footage with better colors" as a YouTube comment on some edit i watched years ago.

Remains one of the funnier pieces of commentary i've read on the subject.

Bump because I had a similar thought.

I film 1080p with 60fps
Convert that to 1080p or 720p with 30fps.
I just think it looks smoother with 30fps.

That new Lenz Video is also 1080p with 30fps, right?

Grew up watching skate videos on tube tvs so interlaced standard definition footage with field rates of 50 or 60 Hz was the standard. I personally love how properly scaled 1080p @ 50/60 fps SD footage looks but HD can look weird on higher framerates. On the other hand stuff like James Cruickshank's Blend video (720p/50 fps) still looks fine to me:

No, it's VX1 & VX2 upscaled to 1080p30.

ok so you're gonna get way smoother and more accurate representation of skateboarding with higher frame rates, people who like 30fps over 60fps just have slow brains that can't handle the information overload :/

60fps in skate videos just look ugly and make feel the skateboarding slower and less frenetic.

that sounds like a solid argument on paper but I couldn't disagree more. The reason 24fps is standard for films is because it is the most natural representation of movement to the human perception. When skating is shot in 60p and rendered out to 30p it looks great, when its left at 60 it appears waaay more unnatural and slower

if anything I'd argue the people that prefer to watch in 60fps are the ones with ""slow brains"" because if you know and understand skateboarding, watching it at a more natural speed (30fps) you will be perceiving and seeing things happen in a more natural way which they happen. 60fps can be done right but only it's pretty rare.

I agree with everything you just said, but what about slo mo clips? If I am shooting at 24fps and want to slo mo a clip it comes out very choppy compared to 60fps. Is the solution to shoot at 60fps, slo mo, and then render down to 24 or 30fps?

yes, the best way to slowmo it is either to interpret it as 23.976 in premiere, and it'll autoslomow, or do an exactly 40% slowmotion.

23.976 ÷ 59.94 = 0.40

Sorry to be that guy but the only reason 24 frames is standard is because it was the least amount of frames that could reliably sync with recorded audio at the time, meaning you shot less film and saved the most amount of money. The only reason it is standard is because it quite literally was "standardized" by the first company to make this break through and everyone else just rolled with it. After nearly 100 years of viewing films in 24fps, it has become our norm.

ok so you're gonna get way smoother and more accurate representation of skateboarding with higher frame rates, people who like 30fps over 60fps just have slow brains that can't handle the information overload :/

Quite an anecdotal statement. I personally noticed soap operas at a young age using this higher frame rate and thought it looked like absolute dogshit. I have never exported a video in 60 frames and probably never would. I know some people that perceive no noticeable difference at all between a 60fps soap opera and a 24fps shot movie. I could just as easily equate someone like that as a "slow brain" but what is really is is a difference of perspective.

Resolve has been capturing my analog video stuff at 50fps and it fuckin' shits me.  Just skipping frames, and don't really understand why.  Just lock me into 25fps ya dog cunts.
