Both lost a bunch of expensive stuff in Barca on the same day from hotels. So much crazy shit happening over there. Stay safe everyone.

Did thief actually break into the dude's room?

I could see stealing when they aren't looking, stealing from a hotel baggage hold room, but I've never seen someone get their hotel room broken into like this.

In my work someone stole us about 20k euros in camera equipment last year.

Last two years there were many thefts from production companies /rental houses in Barcelona. Till the point that companies didn't allow anyone to post ig stories with locations and equipment.

I feel really bad for them.

it's super common actually in BCN. Happened to many people I know at the same hotel years ago. Thieves watch the hotels and it almost seems like the hotel employees/cleaners are part of it sometimes. Happens especially during the trade shows and things where lots of people come in and are unsuspecting. Don't ever leave valuables in your hotel room in BCN. Sorry this happened to these guys.

Wow that's insane. The T2 and M6 plus whatever lens was on there would be worth around $5-$10K alone. That's such a brazen fucking theft. I hope they got insurance.

that's fucking crazy.

but what should you actually do if your stuff is not even save in your hotel room? you cannot take all your belongings with you all the time, as this is also not recommended. and yeah, hotel room safes just won't fit a camera etc.

i was just there in bcn last week for a week (no board with me, sadly), but i did not experience or witness anything sketchy (thankfully, but have been robbed there in the past as well).

Yeah it’s super sketchy there at the moment and it’s been for a few years.

When there in 2017 a hostel roommate was robbed of everything, also his passport, right outside the place.

I was going around with 20€ cash and a fucked up phone and nothing else. Left everything valuable at home in a different city.

How can someone break into a hotel room and not be caught?

Like first of all they have to go by reception

Then cameras

The act of breaking the door open is so loud it would surely draw attention

Only in BCN lol

Yea, I hope he has an insurance. Isn't it also the fault of the hotel   and aren't they responsible for such things?

Don't know about this hotel specifically but I've done some work at a few hotels and there's usually a few different ways in and out and some hidden hallways and shit for workers to use. There's probably a million people who have had to do an odd job and know how to get in without going thru reception.

Breaking a doorframe is also pretty easy but youre right it would be loud. Maybe with BCN current rep people are pretty keen to just mind their own business.

That's upsetting. I know Barca is a pickpocket hotspot and I've had a few friends get bags taken off the racks at the airport but where can you actually safely store stuff in Barcelona now?

I hate hearing about this happening to such great filmers.

When traveling through South America, I purchased World Nomad Travel Insurance https://www.worldnomads.com/travel-insurance. I was working in the Ecuadorian Cloud Forest and my camera gear was just always exposed to the elements even when in storage due. My little film cameras grew mold inside them and I think the XT1's sensor and lenses just needed cleaning. I just had documentation of the equipment's damage/condition and like, proof that I worked there and was able to be reimbursed for the cost of repair. It was a fairly simple process though maybe took a month via communication (didn't bother me at all) but I highly recommend it.

To be fair, I only purchased it for that trip because I knew that I'd be in some deep shit (theft, had substances in my drinks, transportation scams, close calls, etc). I've taken a few week long skate trips across the US, Puerto Rico, Shanghai, and Lisbon and haven't bothered to purchase the insurance. Forgot the cost but maybe doesn't feel worth it or slips my mind for shorter trips.

I also believe that there may be some deal with renters insurance where there'd be some similar coverage. My car was stolen along with hiking/skating/camera gear but I only had auto insurance at the time so nothing was covered. The carjacker was caught, my vehicle recovered (however, damaged past the worth of the actual vehicle), and I filled out a form detailing the incident with a restitution section. However, communication was horrendous in LA county and by the time I finally was about to talk to somebody who actually could verify my case number, she said I was too late past the actual court date and it was my fault for not appearing or whatever. Fuck that. The state and county obviously has my phone, email, and address but I was still unable to get through to talk to the right person. Fuck. IDK rant over.

I heard that some filmers use renters insurance to cover camera gear but idk how it works. If somebody knows, I'd like to hear.

If I’m travelling with shit short term I always get travel insurance. I’m sure he would have for a working Euro trip. It’s undumped footage that’s the worry.

I don't understand how the robber would enter an hotel then break the door of a random room miraculously find something that worth it.
You have to know there is something valuable in that specific room and someone must have told you that guy with the camera bag is in that room. You can't break 10 rooms in an hotel without being caught...

This sucks for sure, so sad. I know a lot of stories of thieves, pickpocket etc, even once, me and my GF going to the subway to go to the airport in that arc of triumph square past midnight this guys almost try to rob us, but coming from south america and dealing with all that kind of stuff almost everyday in some unsafe places we are very aware of what going and from far we saw the intentions, body language, IDK but we knew it, and they look like amateurs to us compared with stuff we been witness since we were born and confront them and basically we let them know we knew and if they donn´t show a knive, gun or similar we won´t give them anything  and to be honest I think they got scared. We were lucky that time, but my point is that when people come from the safest places on earth like Denmark, Sweden (in the case of Tor, don´t  know the other guy) they´re not aware that this stuff can happen, you get robbed, stabbed in MACBA etc. There is a plenty of sketchy people and places out there, you must be careful everytime.

That being said that shitty stuff can happen in public spaces, being robbed from your own hotel room is something planned by employees or an insider, that is not normal even in shitty places and my guess is that red bull have some budget and they weren´t staying in the most shitty hostel ever.

Be safe out there.

Along the lines of renter's insurance, you would want to "schedule" any valuables that are more than $2k (amount will vary slightly depending on company). I'm an insurance agent and deal with this type of stuff often. You just need receipts or appraisals to validate the amount you are insuring it for, and then you're pretty much set. Once it's scheduled you're covered for theft or mysterious disappearance, or damage caused to the item. And there's no deductible or out-of-pocket cost if it's scheduled. You do pay a little more in your premium, but it's worth it if you have nice stuff you couldn't afford to lose and replace.
Hopefully not a kook, but if so, fuck it.
