Needed feedback on a water basin made for skating
« on: October 24, 2022, 04:35:41 PM »
I'm studying architectural technology and constructions management, and sitting on my final semester writing the final report for my bachelor about local treatment of rainwater.

I want to show of what I'm doing, hoping to get some critique, input and ideas out of it.

In the report I show and tell at large about the general solutions for local treatment of rainwater, but a specific part is on how to use some of these installations recreationally.

I got in contact with the the municipal of the city of Aarhus, because a friend of mine knew, that they we're planning on a major intervention on how to treat heavy rainfalls in a central area of the city. I got handed the master plan for the area, and what you see in the drawings is an idea for a dry rainwater basin, that's gonna get flooded when it rains, and then it's going to stay dry for the rest of the time.

The deal was, that they would share their plans, and I would let them use my design for the basin.

I told him, that I never had much experience designing skateparks, and that he should bring my proposal to professional skatepark entrepreneurs, and let them have the definite and final say on the specific design. He said, that he had been skating for a bit in the 80's, and got my point on letting people who build skateparks everyday lay the final hand.

Measurements is as follows:
- The flat bottom is 11,8 m from side to side and 7,6 m from the bottom of the quarter to the furthest point of the flat bottom on the other side. (38,7 foot x 24,9 foot).
- The quarter is 80 cm high with a 180 cm radius. (31,5 inch h, 70,9 inch r)
- The slappy curb is 12 cm  high (4,7 inches).

The reactions I'm hoping for is on:

- The overall idea and design? How does the spot feel to you? Would you skate it?
- Specific measurements? Does it seem fair enough to hand forward?
- Any ideas in alternative design?
- Ideas on how to make the transition from the quarter to the bank?

I'm drawing in Revit.

If the quarter was twice as big and the benches were concrete I'd never skate anywhere else. Very interesting dual purpose design though. I like it.

Looks good to me

Change the bench tops to 20cm (8") thick granite slabs and I think you're good

Nice! If this were in my neighborhood I'd skate it all the time.
A few possibilities...
Pool coping on the quarter pipe sections
A bit of deck behind the quarter pipe (as little as 24"?)
Maybe lift the banked section opposite the trees and quarter (plan north) into another quarter pipe so it can be skated like a mini ramp?

I fux wit it.

Rain water treatment is interesting.

Include a Jersey barrier. They have a really nice one at my local and it is my favorite obstacle.

Get a job in park design that’s great.

It’s a great idea and sometimes the engineering guys are way more chill than parks guys…..

needs concrete benches and at least 2.5-3 ft tall transition

a wedge taken out from one of the flat backs to make a step up/euro gap would be really fucking cool

The transition makes it effectively a quarter pipe with bowled sides.  If the transition were extended another 8' it could be ridden like a half pipe with a bowled side, which I would much prefer.

Add some squirrel proof bird feeders, some shade, a trash can, and a tomb stone.
